But Tooker from the Albany area has signed with the Cuse. Were we ever looking at him
seriously? I will be down for Penn next weekend. What are our best chances there?

My understanding is that Villanova did not pursue Aidan Tooker very seriously. Talented kid, to be sure.

What about Matt Ramsden from Australia? The men could use a few top mid- distance men.

The latest word I have is that Matt Ramdsen has decided to stay in Australia and not come stateside for university. This from someone VERY close to the situation. Let's see what happens. Ramsden is a 14:01 5000-meter guy and has 3:46 1500 speed. Would be a massive recruit if Villanova is able to get him.

Oh, Ramsden initially indicated interest in 4 American programs: Wisconsin, Villanova, Iona, and Oklahoma State -- he also indicated that we was coming to the US to visit the school about the time of Penn Relays. Not sure if he did, in fact, make the visit.

Gloria Donou will be at Nova next year -- appears to be LJ and TJ.

Any news from the men; they need some mid-distance help?

Yes, some distance help for fall 2016 in the form of Nick Steele (Bromfield School, MA).

PRs = 4:14.87 (mile), 9:35.80 (2 miles), 6:01.97 (2000 steeple).

Since a friend's son will be participating, I will be going up to Syracuse for
the NY State Championships. Is VU interested in anyone who will be there. The Lawson girl who is a junior from Corning will be a serious
contender in both the 1500 and 3000. There are girls who are very young
from the Albany area who have run nationally competitive times will also run. I first saw Emily Lipari run up there in high school. Her Penn
Relays anchors are still fresh in my mind. Could we find another Emily?

Where is the next Jordan Williamsz? Or Patrick Tiernan? Or Sonia or even Siofra? Or ...???

As posted , yesterday I went up to the New York State Championships , and I
didn't see much middle distance male runners that would help us.. The two
young girls from the Albany area are young and talented; I would like to see
them next year. I saw the Lawson girl from Corning last year, but she ran a good
(great?) 3ooo
on Friday night, but she was DNS in the 1500 yesterday. She has been
beating Wheeler from Elmira recently. Wheeler is a senior has already signed with Providence. Is there a list somewhere of whom we have signed for 20I6?

T&F announced some members of the 2016 recruiting class. Here are the men:

The Irish Jr. 5k holder is open to coming over but...
read a rumor that Mulciare is going to Okla.St ???

I don't think he'll be 18 until Nov. so he's still very young.

Looks like sprinter Konrad Bayer (Benet Academy, Lisle, IL -- Chicago suburb) will join the Villanova T&F team this fall. Primarily a 400-200 meter runner, he was 8th in the 400m final in May 2016 at the AA Illinois state outdoor meet. Holds his HS records in the 100, 200, and 400; anchored school record 4x400 relay as well. Evidently also a fine soccer goalkeeper.

He has the following PRs:

200: 23.41
400: 49.75

Here's a link to his performance page: http://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=6763982#/L0

When the recruits were posted a few weeks ago, it said that there were going to be more profiled in the weeks to come.

Stay tuned as we'll have many more in the weeks to come!

I hope so -- the men need some strong mid-distance recruits.

Have stayed tune ... But what is more interesting is the Olympics M 800 and Clayton Murphy. This is the way to recruit. Apparently Murphy was a pretty decent runner coming out of high school, but who ever heard of him? Times were not great. Akron? Now look at him. This is vision and coaching at its best. Marcus ...?

Hermes, I thought the same thing last night (or at least I wondered why Murphy found himself at Akron). But if you look at Murphy's high school performances, it's hard to blame anyone coaching at a top program for not recruiting him. I looked at his prep DyeStat page and here's what you get:

In his senior year in high school (2013), he ran his 800 PR of 1:54.19, making him the #14 800m runner in Ohio. 1:54 will not generate much interest interest from the top programs.

Also in that year he ran a 1600 PR of 4:11.72. Not bad -- but not a time that would get top-tier programs excited. He was basically a 4:13 miler coming out of high school. BTW, that 1600 time made him the #6 miler in Ohio and #46 in the USA that year.

Finally, in his final year of XC, he ran 15:32 for 5K -- that time was #16 -- in Ohio.

So, no recriminations for Marcus (or any other coach at a top program) for not recruiting a 1:54/4:12/15:32 kid. After all, evidently no major program in Ohio pursued him very hard -- and they had a chance to see him in the flesh every week. Hard to imagine Marcus sitting on Lancaster Avenue having the #14 800m / #6 1600m kid from Ohio (#46 nationally) on his radar.

Who was on Villanova's radar that year (2013 class)? Ben Malone -- who by comparison was the recruit anyone would have wanted over Clayton Murphy that year. Malone had prep PRs of 1:51.91 (#9 in the USA), and 4:05.59 mile (#6 in the USA). And he was from Jersey. And he smoked Edward Cheserek in the Loucks Games mile that year, closing in 56 seconds. Etc.

So, Murphy is one of those kids who no one could have predicted would be waking up today with an Olympic bronze medal and an 800m PR of 1:42. This is a 1:1,000,000 story.
So, my take-away is this: hooray for that kid! What a story!

My supposed advice to Marcus was actually meant to be a “heads-up.” Pay attention. Here is a model for success – if you are willing to do the hard work. Maybe you can learn something from Akron coach, Lee Labodie. Was it luck or foresight coupled with great coaching? Would Labodie even be willing to share his secrets? It was not meant to be a criticism per se. Your "defense” of Marcus, however, was interesting. Essentially you are saying Marcus was behaving like every other coach so why fault him for failing to recruit Murphy. Maybe he did and failed. Some people like being close to home. But if you are like every other coach – i.e., ordinary - then what makes you so special I should want to be in your program?

Similar arguments could be made about Boris Barien. But I do fault Marcus for missing-out on Isaiah Harris. You went to Britain, Finland and Ireland, but you could not make it to Maine …???

Villanova is one of 4 finalists for Lake Braddock's (Burke, VA) star Kate Murphy. She won the 2016 USATF Junior championship over 3000m in 9:10.51 (USA #2 all-time and a championship meet record). Her 4:07.21 time in the 1500m at Boston this June makes her #3 on the all-time USA prep list (behind only Mary Cain and Alexa Efraimson). Evidently down to Villanova, Oregon, Kentucky, and Virginia. She's got 2:06 800m speed to boot. Would be a massive get for the women's program.

Villanova is one of 4 finalists for the services of Brandon McGorty (Chantilly, VA), the younger brother of Stanford's Sean McGorty). He has already done his on-campus visit. Other contenders are Penn State (already visited), Stanford (next upcoming visit), and Oregon (final visit). PRs of 48.52 (400m), 1:48.58 (800m, USA #3), 2:25.81 (1000i, USA #1), 4:13.46 (1600m, USA #11), 4:08.58 (mile, USA #29), 9:31.42 (3200m).
