Jay Wright Retirement Rumors

Social media exploded Wednesday night with reports that Jay Wright was considering retirement. Those rumors quickly turned into reports that he was, in fact, retiring and that a team meeting would take place tonight to inform the team. Reports have even surfaced that former Nova assistant Kyle Neptune will be named Wright's replacement.

I'm going to wait for official word from the school before touching this publicly, but felt the need to address here considering the implications.

Regardless, hard to ignore both the volume of reports and who they are coming from. At the moment, this appears to be an absolutely stunning development.

Again, if true, hopefully we'll have something from the school soon and some sort of explanation.

Jaelin Llewellyn Reopens Recruitment

The bizarre world of the transfer portal took another turn Tuesday night as Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn announced that he was reopening his recruitment after committing to Clemson a week ago. The fact that the Tigers lost two assistant coaches to other programs in the days since Llewellyn's commitment is believed to be what led to the decision to reopen things. Of course, Villanova was reported to have shown interest in Llewellyn prior to his commitment to Clemson, so this is worth keeping an eye on.

SMU Transfer Kendric Davis Names Top 7, Cuts Nova

SMU transfer Kendric Davis will not be heading to Villanova as he released a top 7 Monday night and the Wildcats did not make the cut. Davis will choose between Texas, Texas Tech, Kansas, TCU, Gonzaga, Houston and Memphis.

Davis is the second transfer to garner Nova interest that will go elsewhere, joining Princeton guard Jaelin Llewellyn (Clemson). It will be interesting to see how the transfer situation plays out.

Nova Shows Interest in SMU Transfer Kendric Davis

It appears that Villanova's interest in adding a player through the transfer portal is legitimate, as another name has been connected with the Wildcats. This time it's SMU transfer Kendric Davis.

Davis, a 5-11 guard, was a four-star prospect who was ranked 102nd in the class of 2018. Originally a TCU commit, he played three seasons at SMU after playing one at TCU. He made All-AAC in each of his three seasons at SMU and was AAC Player of the Year in 2021-22.

In three seasons at SMU, Davis averaged 17.5 points, 5.9 assists, 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals while shooting 51.3% overall and 35.7% from 3. Last season, he averaged 19.4 points, 4.4 assists, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 steals on 50.5% shooting and 37.2% from 3. His previous season was just as good, with 19.0 points, 7.6 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.6 steals on 52.4% shooting and 37.3% from 3. He also posted strong free throw shooting numbers at SMU, hitting 85.4%, 83.3% and 86.8% from the line.

With uncertainty around Justin Moore's health, the Cats are clearly looking to add a guard to the rotation through the portal with in-house options largely unproven. Chris Arcidiacono and Bryan Antoine have been in the program but neither has logged significant minutes for an extended period of time and Antoine, in particular, is likely better suited off the ball. After those two, the point guard candidates are redshirt freshman Angelo Brizzi and incoming freshman Mark Armstrong. Jordan Longino could be an option as well, but like Antoine he is probably better used off the ball and he too is coming off knee surgery.

There's enough in-house talent (Brizzi put together some impressive high school film and looks to be the next in line to thrive in Nova's developmental program while Armstrong put together a strong junior summer last year and built on that through his senior year in HS and should be able to carry on the Nova PG tradition), but experience important at that position and it looks like the Cats will look for a way to add some experience there.

Davis joins Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn and Texas transfer Courtney Ramey as guards Nova has been connected too. Llewellyn has since committed to Clemson.

Davis, as you would expect, is garnering serious interest from a plethora of programs so the competition for his services will be fierce. But he's another name to keep an eye on as we start to navigate an intriguing offseason.

Nova Showing Interest in Princeton Transfer Jaelin Llewellyn

Per multiple reports Thursday, Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn is drawing interest from Villanova.

Llewellyn was the 98th ranked player in his class (2018) and was given a four-star rating. He averaged double figures in all three of his seasons at Princeton, including 15.7 PPG this past season to go with 4.1 rebounds and 2.5 assists. He shot 44.7% from the field and saw his 3PT% jump from 30.8% as a sophomore to 38.6% last season on 5.9 attempts per game.

Llewellyn is reportedly garnering interest from Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas, Miami, Clemson, Texas Tech and Florida.

It remains to be seen how serious the Villanova interest is and if there is any mutual interest, but something to keep an eye on.

DeShawn Harris-Smith to Take Nova Visit Wednesday

Four-star 2023 wing DeShawn Harris-Smith is expected to take an official visit to Villanova on Wednesday. Harris is currently ranked 67th in the class and had a strong end to his junior high school campaign. He seems primed for another jump in ranking should his strong play continue through the travel circuit, and his summer will be one worth watching. Nova appears to be investing heavily in this recruitment.

Nova Showing Interest in Texas Transfer Courtney Ramey

It certainly looks like Villanova will at the very least explore the transfer market. After reports indicated the Cats had expressed interest in Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn, there are now reports there is also interest in Texas transfer Courtney Ramey.

Ramey was ranked 42nd in the class of 2018 by Rivals and played four seasons for the Longhorns. Across those four seasons he averaged 10 points, 3.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists on 39.2% shooting overall, 36.5% from 3 and 73.7% from the free throw line. His best season was his junior campaign in 2020-21, when he averaged 12.2 points, 3.9 assists and 3.2 rebounds while hitting 41.4% from 3 on 4.5 attempts per game. He earned All-Big 12 honors that season.

Something else to keep an eye on as we head into the spring/summer.

Cam Whitmore Highlighted For Strong Play at McDonald's AA Game

As we noted earlier this week, Nova commit Cam Whitmore had an impressive showing at the McDonald's All-American Game. Now, he's been highlighted by Rivals' Recruiting director Rob Cassidy as one of five players who improved their stock at all-star events. You can read the article at the following link:

Nova Commit Cam Whitmore Shines at McDonald's All-American Game

A future Wildcat put on a show against some of the best high school players in the country Tuesday night.

Cam Whitmore had 19 points, eight rebounds and five assists in the East's win over the West in the high school showcase event. The performance was highlighted by several standout plays, including a windmill dunk, an impressive move and layup and an incredible blocked shot that Whitmore absolutely skied to swat.

It was an impressive showing from Whitmore and certainly served to increase the excitement to see him in a Nova uniform next year.

Justin Moore Suffers Injury Late in Elite 8 Win Over Houston

As Nova Nation celebrates a third trip to the Final Four in the last six years, one eye is being kept on Justin Moore, who went down with an injury late in the Wildcats' Elite 8 win over Houston. It didn't look good at the time, and there wasn't a whole lot of encouragement in the postgame press conference.

"X-ray was fine, no broken bones," Jay Wright said. "Probably not good for Justin. We're going to get an MRI when we get back. Probably not good."

The fear is an Achilles tear, and while we'll hold out hope until receiving official word, all signs point to a worst case scenario.

We'll have updates as they become available, and if the fears are confirmed we'll dig into the impact. But for now, do your best to enjoy another incredible achievement by the program.
