Samuels, Daniels, Dixon Cleared for Tuesday Against Seton Hall

Jay Wright revealed on Monday evening that everyone who has been active to this point in the season will be available for Tuesday's game against Seton Hall.

Jermaine Samuels and Caleb Daniels completed their myocarditis tests and got clean results. Daniels' calf is also okay, and Eric Dixon's banged up Achilles won't prevent him from being able to play.

Samuels and Daniels just returned to full practice on Monday, so while they've been doing individual work, it's unclear how in shape they are. Their minutes will be something to monitor Tuesday night, but for a while it appeared Villanova might be down all three players, so this is certainly encouraging news as the 'Cats try to get back in the swing of things.

Nova, Big East Taking Things 'Week by Week'

As both the program and the conference attempt to get the full 20 game conference schedule in, Wright is focusing on what is right in front of his team while the conference explores all options on how to make the rest of the season work.

Corey Floyd Jr. Commits to UConn

Not a huge surprise here, but one of Villanova's 2022 targets is off the board after Corey Floyd Jr. committed to UConn Thursday night. Villanova got in late with its offer, and while it was enough to get the 'Cats added to Floyd's previously released cut list, it wasn't enough to overcome longtime favorite UConn.

Villanova is still waiting on a decision from 2021 prospect Trevor Keels and will continue to pursue 2022 targets like Jalen Duren, Justice Williams, and Mark Armstrong, among others.

Caleb Daniels, Eric Dixon Dealing With Injuries

Another injury update from Jay Wright's Thursday media availability regarded Caleb Daniels and Eric Dixon. Daniels, who is also still awaiting clearance from his myocarditis tests, tweaked his calf in the one practice the Wildcats had between pauses. Likewise, Eric Dixon dinged his Achilles in that same practice.

Neither injury sounds particularly severe. Wright said he would have a better idea of availability for Tuesday against Seton Hall on Monday, but it sounded like he considered the bigger impediment to Daniels playing Tuesday was getting his heart test results in time. As for Dixon, Wright said if he had to guess right now, he would say that Dixon will be able to play on Tuesday, but they will monitor the situation over the next few days.

Bryan Antoine Returns to Practice

Another important tidbit from Jay Wright's Thursday media availability is that Bryan Antoine has returned to practice. There is a possibility that Antoine could pay on Tuesday against Seton Hall, but if not his return will likely happen sooner than later. Great news for both Antoine, who has just had an incredibly tough time since arriving at Villanova, and for the team.

Jermaine Samuels, Caleb Daniels Not Cleared For Full Return Yet

On Thursday, Villanova returned to practice after a second COVID-19 pause, and Jay Wright met with the media and covered a wide range of topics which we will get you caught up on.

One of the most pressing notes is the fact that Jermaine Samuels and Caleb Daniels have not been cleared for a full return to the court yet. Each player still needs to get their myocarditis test before being fully cleared. Wright is hopeful that the tests and results will be in hand by Monday, opening the possibility of both players being available Tuesday against Seton Hall. Wright said he is considering moving Monday's practice to later in the day in the hopes that the results will be returned and the pair can get a practice in assuming the tests come back clean.

We should get an update and a clearer picture of each player's availability for Tuesday on Monday.

Villanova Back on Pause

Some disappointing news on Monday, as the program has announced it is back on pause after further positive COVID-19 tests. The program just came out of its previous pause yesterday, getting in a full team practice. As a result of this new pause, Tuesday's game against DePaul, Friday's game against Marquette, and the January 13 game against Xavier have been postponed.

Jay Wright said Monday afternoon that two players have tested positive this time. For now, the pause will last 10 days, but there is concern that there will be more positive tests tomorrow which would reset the timeline.

Corey Floyd Jr. Set to Commit on Jan. 14

Corey Floyd Jr., one of Villanova's 2022 targets, has set a commitment date of Jan. 14, per his Twitter page.

We noted Villanova's interest in Floyd at the beginning of the cycle, but the Cats were somewhat late with an offer, getting it out shortly after Floyd had cut his list to seven. The Nova offer was good enough to get it into Floyd's finalists, and the Wildcats joined Florida, UConn, Rutgers, Miami, Providence, Auburn, and Wake Forest.

Speculatively, I think UConn, Providence, and Rutgers may be the favorites. That's simply based on quotes I've seen from Floyd. He's spoken highly of all the teams he is still considering, but just trying to read between the lines a little that's the sense I get. It will be interesting to see how the late Nova offer impacts things.

Floyd is currently ranked No. 96 in his class by Rivals, but I think we need to be taking specific ranking numbers with a grain of salt right now with the lack of evaluation opportunities there have been. Floyd is a four-star recruit, and I think at least until we can get back in the gym to watch these guys/until they actually start playing the "star" ranking is the safest way to get a general feel on the level of the recruit (although even the star system is not perfect). Regardless, Floyd has great size at 6-5, 205 and will give a program a nice early boost to its 2022 class.

Brandon Slater Injured in Win Over St. Joe's

You may have noticed that Brandon Slater didn't find the court in the second half of Saturday's win over St. Joe's. After the game, Jay Wright revealed that Slater suffered an injury to his back in the game. Wright doesn't believe it's serious and is hopeful that it is just spasms. If Slater was needed in the second half he was ready to give it a go, but with the 'Cats pulling away there was no reason to push things.

“Slater got hurt in the first half. He hurt his back. We’re thinking it’s spasms, he was gonna try in the second half but then we didn’t need him so we didn’t want to push it," Wright said.

Hopefully the early diagnosis is correct and Slater will be back out there with his teammates on Wednesday against Marquette or Jan. 2 against Xavier at the latest. With Bryan Antoine and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree still dealing with injuries of their own an extended absence from Slater would be a concern.
