Saw it last night and was absolutely floored with how good it was. Perhaps even better than the original Rocky. Might go see it again.

Saw it last night and was disappointed. Wasn't as good as everyone had been saying. Too formulaic. If you saw the trailer, then you saw the whole movie.

Here's a recap:

- Apollo's illegitimate son was rescued from a life of thuggery by his widow when he was 12
- He grows up in an LA mansion
- At 30 he quits his office job to become a fighter
- He travels to Philly to convince Rocky to train him
- Rocky says no; the kid persists, Rocky says yes
- Along the way, the kid meets a love interest who looks exactly like Lisa Bonet. Weird when you consider that Phylicia Rashad is playing his mother.
- Everything is going great until Rocky faces some adversity
- Adversity makes Rock want to quit (life, as well as boxing training)
- Kid convinces Rocky that life is worth living and he continues on
- With no boxing record to speak of, kid inexplicably gets a bout on HBO with the heavyweight champ
- Kid fights for the title.
- Spoiler Alert: Kid wears red, white, blue trunks resembling an American flag
- Kid and Rocky celebrate by running up art museum steps
- The End

Other notes:

- Paulie is dead
- Rocky's real son Robert has apparently grown tired of him and moved away to Vancouver with his girlfriend
- Rocky still runs the restaurant

It was good. Not great. Worth a watch for sure. The most ridiculous part of all this is Rocky would make a terrible trainer. There was zero technical aspects to Rocky's fight game for the first 5 movies. Blocked punches with his face and was a murderous body puncher with never ending heart and will. Those are personal traits, not ones you can instill in others. A guy either has heart or he doesn't. You can't give him a heart. It was humorous watching Rocky all of a sudden give a young, athletic black fighter all these technical training techniques. I giggled at that.

Every movie is formulaic. Especially sports movies. It's what you do with the that template that makes a movie good or not. The script, cinematography, acting, directing and editing were all excellent. It was a visually spectacular movie. It also did daring things, like the graphics providing the tale of the tape for every boxer introduced in the movie, which was straight out of the Tarantino playbook.

Perhaps most importantly though, it struck the right balance between nostalgia for the Rocky movies and blazing a new trail for itself, especially with the theme music.

I was hoping Adonis would be killed in the ring. What a fascinating outcome that would have been. Then you'd have Rocky responsible for the deaths of father & son.

His name is Adonis?

Christ, you can't make that shit up.
1. The character goes by Donnie.
2. I don't think you can expect the illegitimate son of a man named "Apollo Creed" and some hoodrat would be named something like "John" or "Michael".
3. Both Apollo and Adonis are figures from Greek mythology.
4. The current light heavyweight champion is named Adonis Stevenson.

Tony Gazzo's driver is one of the funniest characters in film history. "Take her to the zoo"

Also, Rocky, All The President's Men, Network, and Taxi Driver has to be the greatest Best Picture class in history.

Movie is well done and one of the better Rocky movies. no stretch for Rock to teach legitimate boxing skills as he had learned from Apollo in his LA gym in Rocky III. Good mix of nods to the series and new things with Rocky aging. Cast was solid through and through.

I thought the lead-up to the first fight in Philly was especially well done, very exciting cinema -- better than the climactic fight though that was decent too.

Do you have friends?

Update: just looked. Nowhere close.

I would guess that quite a bit over 50 percent of my tweets were written while live sporting events were happening and probably five percent were automated from my fifth tier blog. If we say that 60 percent of them were between those two things, it comes out to around 11 a day, which is like five minutes.

You have over 75K so I'd say that's plenty close to drive home the point you're a cyber nerd.
