Curt Schilling - The hunt to be offended

The ole "I'm not racist or a bigot I have black/muslim/ gay friends!" defense. Tried and true.

Haha!

I am just in agreement with his message - sometimes people are just looking to be offended by someone. Just because that is the case does not mean they are in the right. At some point you need to have thicker skin. An opinion is just that - an opinion.

One has to consider the employer's social media policy. I've written and enforced many of them.
In this case he posted a meme on facebook.

I've recently seen guys like Gottlieb and Peter King rip the Second Amendment on their twitter accounts. Incredibly stupid.

I don't know if ESPN, CBS, or SI addresses social media in their policy manuals. Most companies do these days. Think three times before hitting the submit button. And then think again.

Please edit thread title to: Curt Schilling Rememberrd from ESPN.

I would be okay with Schilling going around telling people how they should think if he hadn't defrauded the state of Rhode Island in pursuit of making a video game company.

If you did something that stupid wouldn't you hide from the spotlight for the rest of your life? You really think people need your advice?

Guy is a deadbeat welfare taker. And dumb as shit. But that game 6 was probably worth putting up with him being a Neanderthal jack weed for the rest of time.

ESPN had an image problem for years and they are being very ruthless about protecting it:

“If you’re taking a paycheck from ESPN, you have to be extra careful about how you communicate publicly and always err on the side of caution and responsibility,” said James Andrew Miller, a co-author of “Those Guys Have All the Fun: Inside the World of ESPN.”

“It’s not an unfair or impractical position for ESPN to hold,” he added. “If you want to express your own opinions in a provocative way on social media, then ESPN and a lot of other media organizations are probably not where you should be working.”

It's true of most corporations. Whether you work at ESPN or the parts counter at AutoZone. And it's held to be a reasonable policy by the DOL. It's so easy to follow. Unless you're an ahole that thinks EVERYONE MUST KNOW MY OPINION ON THIS SUBJECT RIGHT NAO!

Just do your job.

This is a case of ESPN deciding that Curt was no longer worth the hassle. Not much different than the Browns releasing Manziel or Ravens releasing Ray Rice. When your skills are no longer > than your negatives, you get left behind. Plenty of ex-players out there that can provide on-air commentary without the baggage.

I'm guessing that their policy is vague enough to allow some of their "talent" to continue to make fools of themselves on social media without penalty. And it wouldn't take much research to compile a list of idiot comments from Bayless and Smith that warranted a corporate punishment of some sort.

There are simply topics you can't touch if you don't jump in and embrace. Even tolerance isn't good enough anymore. Really need to keep your mouth shut if you don't feel all warm and fuzzy towards exactly how these causes are being advanced.

I can't tolerate the fact that espn handed Schilling an EASY job after he blew all of his career earnings and 75 million in funds from the state of rhode island on a video game pipedream - and he still couldn't stop being a crybaby

Very dumb move by Schilling. Hard to defend a guy who goes on social media and contradicts his employers social/moral positions without thinking his job is not in jeopardy.

You guys are on a slippery slope here. Forget everything except the failed video game company - why is he a bad guy for that? Business fail all the time, should he be chastised for that?

Video company failure has nothing to do with him getting fired for his social media posts.

Another one of government funded solar companies went bust last week. Hardly any mention of the cost to the tax payers in the news.

He bilked taxpayers out of millions. Knew his company was going down, then bilked them out of more millions in a hail mary. Guy should be in jail. Tells workers to keep coming to work when he knows they would never get paid for it. Pregnant woman finds out her healthcare has been terminated - while she's at the doctor. Scumbag shit. But yeah Curt - Muslims and gays are the bad guys.

You a state of RI auditor? I know a guy who worked for his company and ended up losing s lot - but he has nothing but good things to say about Curt Schilling still to this day.

He has raised 10s of millions of dollars for ALS, but yeah he's a scumbag.

Then don't go yapping about small gov't and hand outs when you have you elfin hand out. To the tun of 100M in taxpayer money. Ask the guy who's wife was undergoing bone marrow treatment when he had his healthcare turned off if he thinks ole Curt's such a swell guy. Or that pregnant woman. Or 100 other people in that company.

Again - he can say what he wants. Plenty of bigoted blowhards enough for all of us, what's one more. I have no issue with it. First amendment and all. Just don't act shocked when someone calls you on your shit. Especially someone who's writing your paychecks.

Good news is for him - theres no one to hold him back now. He can say whatever he wants.

Main reason I focus on the RI stuff is that I get being an idiot on twitter. I tend to do it myself.

But I haven't wasted millions, then been given an incredible opportunity at the worldwide leader in sports, and continued being an idiot on twitter. How many good things do you have to have happen to you in life to stop making a huge part of your personality hate for other people? This guy should and probably still will be basking in the sunset til he croaks. Instead he is putting his mental energy into hate. I just don't get it
