John Coghlan is seeking to join his illustrious father as a sub-4:00 miler, and tonight at the Morton Mile in Dublin he came damn close, finishing ninth in a fast race, in 4:00.79. That's a big PR and should convince him that breaking 4:00 is very do-able if he gets in the right race. Villanova recruited John rather half-heartedly a few years back.

The only three USA father-son sub-4:00 miler duos (I think only three) are:

3:58.8 Barry Brown 05/13/72
3:59.99 Darren Brown 04/05/2003

3:59.2 Matt Centrowitz 05/24/75
3:57.92 Matt Centrowitz, Jr. 02/14/09

3:58.7 Sam Bair 06/23/67
3:59.72 Sam Bair, Jr. 02/13/10

Another one (with a slight Villanova connection) is:

3:54.16 Kip Keino 08/30/65
3:58.73 Martin Keino 06/04/94

Too bad John didn't get to run at VU. Would have made a nice story. Believe he would have progressed faster under Marcus than at University Dublin. At the time, John didn't have the times to warrant a scholarship. Believe Eamonn got his ego out of line. He could have simply paid for the kid to come to VU. Recall the debacle of John running at Millrose. He didn't really belong, but Eamonn probably called in a few favors, but embarrassed his kid.

Note in the same meet, Mark English won 800 A Race in 1:48.96 and the women's 800:

1 Ciara Mageean City of Lisburn AC 2.03.21
2 Laura Crowe Riocht AC 2.05.41
3 Siofra Cleirigh-Buttner DSD AC 2.06.57

The one to watch is Cleirigh-Buttner. She turns 16 in two weeks.
