Who is he? Rumor has it that he is a revered runner from Villanova’s glorious past. He is bringing a DMR from Dublin City University (DCU) to Millrose Games and may have been instrumental in steering Mark English away from VU and to DCU … On the other hand, may be he is aiding VU by showing the Irish lad what US running is really all about and why one should think about running at VU. You don’t want to end up like Mageean who took the money and ran - only not very well …

Coughlan, came to Nova at the height of our success in the Mile. Ran CC with Buerkle, Mason , Murphy. Set a couple world records in the indoor mile. Had amazing longevity after finishing at Nova.

It's difficult to determine which one of you has his tongue more firmly in cheek.

Excattyguy, loved your response. Tongue deeply embedded in cheek seems very apt … Still, who is he?

Well, first of all, his name is Coghlan, not Coughlan.

Second, he's one of only two men in history to have run sub 3:50 indoors (the other is El G -- not bad company).

Third, he's the only man in history to have gone sub 4:00 past the age of 40.

Fourth, he was 1983 World Champion at 5000 meters.

Finally, he's a guy who is slightly irked that his son was not offered a full (or significant) ride at Villanova.

Eamon was named The Chairman of the Boards at the Melrose Games for winning the Wanamaker Mile 7 times. Marcus O'Sullivan won it 5 times and Ron Delaney won it 4 times.

Flynn, OMara, Marcus and Eamon set the world record in the 4 X Mile relay at the Melrose games which still holds today.

Look up Chairman of the Boards at Melrose Games.

My soph year at Nova, about 1988. I am walking out of Sullivan Hall on a sat. morning to head to the Pit for a late breakfast. Very hungover if I recall. Some guy comes walking up the steps and in an Irish accent asks "Hey mate, do you know where the closest water fountain is". I tell him and start to walk away, stunned, I turn around and say "hey, you're Eamoon Coghlan". He just gave me a smile and a wink and said yes and kept on going.

I think his boy made the correct decision in staying home and maybe it paid off for him as he got the sub-4:00 thing off his back (at weekend).

He really wasn't up to coming over as a 18yo. but maybe as a more mature 23yo. he could accomplish some things that wouldn't have been possible the last few years.

With some continued improvement he can do some grad work and spend a year at 'Nova? I'm not sure how that works elig. wise but I've seen it done.

son a victim of Title 9?

No. He's a late-bloomer who didn't have the times as an 18/19 yo. Were Ireland not in a down cycle he wouldn't have stood out at all.

I doubt he was offered by any US school in part because of his background but he didn't have the 1:52/3:50/8:25 times you like to see.
If he progress he gets full credit and if not no US coach gets the blame. He's done well to get to sub-4 IMO.
