Edward Cheserek to visit VU

We're firmly in his top five. If I had to guess, he's off to Arizona because of James Li's work with Kenyans, but it's big that we're even in his top five, and it looks like Marcus will be the last person to get to make a pitch for him.

Look at where all the other places are in relation to New Jersey. They need dates for those places well ahead of time because of the need to travel. He could get to Villanova in an hour and a half.

You usually want to be the last person to make your case. Think baseball and last at bat or closing argument in a trial... Advantage VU.

Think the key to understanding this recruitment of Cheserek is his coach, Dr. Marty Hannon. Note the "Dr." Not only is Hannon the track & XC coach, he is also a senior math teacher. This suggests a certain level of academics. Note also that Hannon kept Cheserek's schedule relatively light in the Fall to better prepare him for the SATs. Seems Hannon put a great emphasis on Cheserek doing well on the scholastics exams. From my perspective, the other four colleges are "safety" schools. You need the grades for VU. And Marcus makes no exception. Hannon made sure Cheserek qualifies.

Read some articles that suggest Cheserek is very close to Hannon. Think family, etc. VU is a whole lot closer to St. Benedict's than Arizona and Oregon.

Note also that Marcus is quietly putting together a very strong men's squad. See new recruits - Ben Malone, Pat Tiernan. They will be competitive at XC, score points at NCAAs and win a lot of gold watches at Penn - DMR, 4xmile, 4x800. Maybe Cheserek wants to be part of this.

How much will Marcus' visit to Kenya (several years ago) play into this ...?

This would be very cool.

There is a general rule that you will not get the best impression of a school when visiting when the weather is not good. How much of this snow storm on the east coast will affect the Villanova area and Cheserek's decision? I believe it will only deposit a few inches of snow in the Philadelphia area and might make the VU campus look like a winter wonderland ...?

Wonder whom Cheserk bunks with, Friday evening ...?

Another thought: Two premier runners will be on their way to Washington. Does Marcus accompany the runners or stay to oversee the recruitment visit? Have to believe that Marcus stays home, this weekend..

Be great if Marcus can convince Cheserek to come to VU. Think Cheserek will grow more as an athlete and as a person at VU. Something about Marcus will make that possible. Again, I think the key is Hannon.
