I think SHSU is deserving of #3 based on what they have coming back & not necessarily for beating Villanova last December.
Villanova deserves to be ranked in top 5 and I think 4 is the right spot for preseason. My concerns are that this team is Robertson/Cherry heavy when it comes to rankings. Hard for pundits to think Villanova is any less than top 5 with 2 high profile players.
Offense needs to be able to protect JR & receivers have to emerge and/or step up their production dramatically. The 3 headed RB attack (Underwood, White, & Gudzak) must stay healthy. Keep an eye on frosh Forbes. He is going to be a good one. Run game needs to take pressure off JR.
The receivers will have to find a leader to emerge from the ranks. Livers was the go to guy. Several capable, but have all been 20-30 catch guys not 60 catch guys. Need TE production from Bell & Morris.
Offensive line must replace 2 All-CAA performers.
I maintain that the defense will be very strong this season. Wins of 41-28 last season may turn to 21-10 this season.
Upfront is solid with Paris & Kpassanon on the ends. Look for K-Pass to become potentially a household name. Has all the physical tools to play at next level. Osei, recent Temple transfer, adds depth. Nose tackle will see Young, Drains, & M.Williams fight for time. All are big boys that will clog the A gaps & give Cherry cover to make plays.
LBs are solid led by the spectacular Cherry. He will be flanked by Calitro & Major. Look for Shockley to push those 2 for time.
I think Malik Reeves has star written all over him. A starter as a true frosh he will be a great one when its all over. Ceneus is a All-CAA performer on the other side.
Safeties are solid. The will miss Sarnese heady leadership, but they have a lot of talent here also. McCurry & McCann return as starters & look for Wes Smith & Rashaan Stewart to find time. Lots to like here.
This group has all the makings of a dominant FCS defense.
Of course, none of these preseason polls or my rants above matter at 7:31pm on 9/3 at the Rent in East Hartford.
Not far away now.
