Harry Reid remembered

Re: Harry Reid as US Senator remembered

fixed the title for you.

Interested in adp's take on whether this improves the chances for an amendment to federal law to allow sports gambling in NJ (and perhaps other places).

I don't hate anyone. As for Harry Reid, he might be the only human on earth who is more angry than ND. The way he ran the Senate was an absolute disgrace and I won't miss him.

Most effective American politician of the last decade. Somehow stayed in charge of the senate democrats despite having a staunchly pro-life record.

So can Christie get a sports gambling amendment to allow it at NJ casinos now or not with this guy headed out the door?

To be effective you have to actually accomplish something beyond preserving your own power. If your power leads to nothing is that really effective? He presided over the least effective Senate in US History. He was so far as to not allow amendments on the Senate floor by the minority. The effective pols of the last decade all reside in the Gov's. mansions. Washington hasn't gotten anything done in years.

Once he became minority leader his power to stop NJ waned. The key now is what does Churchill Downs want to do? If they walk into McConnell's office and say they want INET gambling, NJ could attached something to that and get sports gambling done. Absolutely. Will it happen? I don't know. One of my old buddies moved back to Louisville and is actually the head of YUM brand/Churchill Downs government affairs. He used to work for the American Gaming Association. He'd certainly know how to get it done. However, I have no clue of their position on the issue. Hasn't been any buzz here in DC. I have no clue what's going on in NJ either. Haven't been following the issue or know if anyone's working it. Focus seems to be all-in on getting AC stood up again and that's all been handled within Trenton-AC. My sense is that if the folks in AC thought it was possible they'd try to get something done. However, here is your challenge. With many of the casino's shutting if you're the Borgata and gobbling up a lot of the revenue, do you want anything that helps your competitors? Harrah's is probably good now as well. They have their PA-Delaware casino's and still have a foothold in AC. Where is their incentive to do anything? It's what killed the effort the first time around. The way to get it done would be if Harrah's got on board and formed an alliance with Churchill Downs/the race tracks you'd be cooking with gas. I have absolutely no clue where those interests align. Obviously you'd also have to fight off Sheldon Adelson and all his billions as well. However, Reid was his boy (despite being a Dem) so he's weakened a bit. The time to do it would be this fall before the 2016 campaign heats up.

Most exciting thing that's happened since we won the BET. He is a senile crotchety old do nothing idiot!

What came first the vetoes of the POTUS or the statements of the
Republicans about making Barack a one term POTUS? That statement
strongly implies that there will be no cooperation for Barack from the Republicans.

In 1948, HST almost never mentioned Dewey; he attacked the do-nothing Congress
That was only interested in defeating him and his FDR ideas. He won the Presidency
and both houses of Congress. There is a difference with HST running as an incumbent
and 2016.

I see what you did there.

My favorite Harry Reid story is how worked to fund Sharon Angle's primary campaign because he knew she was the only general opponent he could beat. He successfully did so and cruised to re-election while Dems got pounded in the House races. That was Harry Reid. He was a brilliant pol when it came to survival. Greatly underrated in those terms.
