In honor of Labor Day, explain unions to me

I fully admit I'm stupid to most common things that people understand.

Explain unions in modern day society. Why is a company or person protested or looked down upon if they hire non union workers to say, build something. What is the upside to using a union contractor other than not being beaten to death?

How did unions come to be looked upon as thugs and a legalized mob that can intimidate and charge outrageous rates for shitty work?

And speaking of mob, how are they in bed with unions? When I watch the sopranos, I'm lost on why Tony's guys sit around a construction site for a "no show" job. Does this really happen and how is the mafia benefitting here?

Follow up question. Why have unions been politicized and have become essentially a propaganda arm of the Democratic Party much in the same way minorities and gays have?

The mob was famous for corrupting unions. At its height no large buildings in NYC (over $2M) could be built unless the construction job was given to a mob-controlled union contractor.

it works like this. Tough mob guys approach guys in a union. They tell the workers, "you do what we tell you to do or you're gonna catch a beating."

The next day, the workers strike, as per orders from the mob. A mob guy with experience in union negotiations goes to the head of the union with financial demands. He says, "your guys aren't working on this project again unless you cut us in on your next contract (usually 2 percent). And you have to use our preferred companies for your concrete, your metal, etc. And you will hire 2 of our guys at $750 a week - they don't have to show up, but you will produce pay stubs for their parole officers. And if you go to the cops, we'll whack you and your family."

Seems to me like in pre-OSHA days they were needed. Now with so many laws and regulations in place to protect them, they're not needed and in fact are crippling many industries. Teaching being the biggest one.

Unions, like most other things worked before 1960. Then TJC's (and ND's) generation ****ed everything up.

Looks like you answered your own question, Nicky. I like this answer.

Jobs where unions (and collective bargaining) are desirable:
Any job where people die or are disabled at work on a regular basis.

Jobs where unions are a problem:
Any other line of work, and police, who would normally be included in the above list.

Teachers are ruining America!!!!!!!!

It's funny to troll teachers though. Tell them how their sucky unions are killing public education and then sit back, grab the popcorn and then watch them lose their minds. You'll hear phrases like "I have the toughest job in America" and "you have no idea how hard it is" at least 20 times.

They really go apeshit when you bring up summers off. That sets them off again. Maybe they're right. You have no idea how hard it must be to set up a classroom and pin up "welcome back" signs. Very stressful way to spend a summer.

I like the, "You don't understand, it is not a 7-3 job. I have to stay and help kids out until at least 5!"

Is the military unionized?
No, it's against the law. They shouldn't be allowed to unionize either, because it would undermine the chain of command.

They should absolutely get better healthcare than they get from the VA though.

They also say that they are only paid for 9 months of work. I am not sure how that is possible.

th

"Wanna go to the Yankees game tonight, Phineas? They're playin the Padres. Meet me by the bat. You're goin."

I don't know what David Simon is thinking when he says that The Wire comports to his political ideology. The only semi-successful policy enacted in the entire show was deregulation.

The unions and laborers are corrupt, the government is a mess, etc.

nardi--can you give us an update on merc? Still perplexed by everything? Satisfied with the shrubs?

Don't have enough time. He is mulling it over, left the board after we lost, has not come back, but is getting the itch.
