I actually don't think it is that big of a deal. As a Yankees fan, I would have no problem giving arod 5 million for the next however many years instead of all over the next 3 or however many he has left.

They created an annuity for him, with the intention of earnings a return on the deferred amount... not sure why after 5 years we can't get past this one.

Someone pointed out that the deal actually worked out pretty well for the Mets. It freed up the money to pay Mike Hampton's salary. Mike Hampton leaving The Mets (after winning NLCS MVP) in the next offseason gave The Mets the compensation pick they used to select David Wright.

So while it's easy to say "lolmets", it wound up landing them their greatest ever position player.
