Josh Lampron, who won the 2011 New Balance Outdoor Nationals mile championship last June as a junior, formally committed on February 4th to run for Marcus O'Sullivan's Villanova squad.

At New Balance Nationals last year Lampron, who hails from Mansfield, Massachusetts, won gold by setting a new mile PR of 4:05.99 -- the 6th fastest mile run by a US prep in 2011. His 2011 indoor 1000 meter time of 2:29.77 was the 10th fastest in the country last year.

Lampron is the reigning Massachusetts state champion in both the indoor mile and outdoor 800 meters. Lampron started off the 2011 cross country season as the #9 ranked harrier in the United States, according to Mile Split, before an injury derailed his season.

Lampron has the following 2011 PRs:
400 meters: 51.24
800 meters: 1:53.13i
1000 meters: 2:29.77i (USA #10)
1500 meters: 3:50.03
1 Mile: 4:05.99 (USA #6)
5K XC: 16:06.82

I like that mile PR. 400/800 times aren't super, but good. Could see him moving up eventually, once he matures and gets stronger, to the 5K.

He's had limited training the last 6 months due to an inj. that they're being extra careful with. I think he's doing some relays during indoor.

I had read that he had commited a while back but there was no confirmation it was just a message board.

Marsella the other NE miler signed with UVa after considering Uconn and Prov. I don't think he visted 'Nova. He'll be at Millrose Fri and it's too bad Lampron won't as well as I guess they won't meet up before June.

In the tape of Lampron's 4:05, Maresella is way back as should be expected.
I hope Lampron runs at Penn.

Just viewed the video of Lampron’s win in the New Balance mile, last year. LSU-Nit, thanks. Lampron looked very good - nice efficient running style, very smooth. My impression is the boy does have “speed.” Notice his lift in the end and his rapid turnover. His closing finish and a 58.6 last 400 bespeak of speed.

His 1:53.13 (800) was achieved at the New Balance Indoors, last March. He finished 7th to Zavon Watkins’ 1:50.84 (a meet record). [Incidentally Watkins is going to Penn State. They have been gathering a lot of very good middle distance runners of late.] In the process, he beat some very good 800 runners and was in the mix with some better 800 runners.

My point: I think Lampron just may be a very good miler afterall. Believe he has the necessary speed. Note: read somewhere he started as a sprinter and moved up. Also runs on team’s 4x400.

Reminds me of Louie Quintana.

Here are two reports on Lampron’s injury:

"The Hornets are going about business without their top runner, the phenomenally talented Josh Lampron. A hamstring injury earlier in the season led to problems with two metatarsal bones in his foot. “He’s at 90-95% percent,” said Collins. “He said 99 the other day. We were trying to manage it with cross training and working in the pool.” [late Oct ‘11]

"Collins has no intention of racing Lampron until he’s ready. Whether or not that’s sometime in the fall or winter is still a question. Lampron is looking to improve on the scintillating 4:05.99 mile he ran in June to capture the national title. Indoors, a fast time in the 1,000 is just one of his goals." [past week or so]

On XC … He was winning early in the XC season before his injury.

Marcus apparently made a good choice. Now if he can just find an outstanding 400 man and an outstanding 800 man … Is Mark English (IRL) coming after this visit to the U.S? Did he visit VU while he was here? Is anything coming from Down Under?

I agree with the comments about his speed. I was going to post the same thing. He probably has better than 51 400m speed and can run a much faster 800. Looking at the race, I think Lampron might not have won if the second place finisher hadn't been surprised by the closing pace. He put on a burst at the end, Lampron held on. However, the winner doesn't matter. I think Lamproon showed he will be a factor if the injury doesn't linger.
