Given the importance of next weekend, I wonder if those who will participate
just ran a good workout. But not running at their fullest.

It may have been the weather too. The most interesting thing is McEntee running unattached. Maybe he is redshirting the outdoor season. I'm also curious aobut Fitzsimmons' status.

There was a Chris Fitzsimmons sighting at the Widener Invitational, Friday. He won the 800 in 1:53.37. He ran unattached.

Note that Chris Williams ran for the first time in a very long time (a year? two years?) Finished 10th in section 9 of 800 in 1:57.91. What happened?

Re FitzSimons: if ever there was an American kid who one would expect not to be red-shirted, it was this kid. Marcus has been consistent throughout his tenure about his reluctance to let true freshman use a year of eligibility; I've read him say that the best that can be expected of a freshman is to run at his high school level and that most kids go backwards as freshmen. But FitzSimons was so promising, I expected him to be a big part of things this year. But Marcus stuck to his blueprint and basically red-shirted the lad for all three seasons. Marcus has allowed the (usually older) imported kids to run as freshman, but usually shuts down 18-year old American kids for their first year. Still, FitzSimons was splitting 1:47 last summer. With 4 years of eligibility left, he could turn out to be a monster.

Totally understand Marcus' philosophy on the true 18 yr. old frosh. The jump from HS to college is more about training than racing I would think. A HS kid has never gone through the type of training/workouts that they will in college and I think that really hurts their racing quality as a frosh. Most just aren't ready to make the jump.

The only exception, which I am sure that Marcus has factored in, is that for the non full scholarship guys, staying at Nova for a 5th year can be pretty darn expensive. Even if you are giving a kid a 50% scholarship, the family still will need to come up with about 25K to pay for that 5th year.
