Mid-Atlantic Regional

Women may also have won. Lipari and Akande in a deadheat --1&2
. Picirrillo 4th and Schappert also in the top ten. Don't know about 5th runner. Too bad Cook did not return.

Women did win 31 -- 35 over Georgetown

Impressive win for the women. They got beat by Gtown handily at BE meet, but Piccirrili didn't run if my memory serves me right. Gtown ran same 6 of 7 runners they who ran at BE meet. Gtown was ranked #4 in the country.

Men seem to be chugging along. Hopefully both teams peak in 8 days!

It was a super day for both teams; now let's nail some recruits

couple of observations

It's difficult to compare times from different courses, but last year Harris ran 22:05 at the regionals at PSU. This year her time was 20:35, a big drop and a clutch performance. She was also 1:01 faster today than at Paul Short. Schappert also stepped up big time today. Still, there was a 42 second gap between 1 and 5, and all 7 Georgetown women finished in front of her. That would be a major problem at Nationals. However, Nova has a history of unexpected performances at crucial times, ie Emery Molloy and Tosha Woodward. So, who knows?

In previous years it seems the men have had some trouble adjusting from 8000 to 10,000 yards. That was not the problem today. I believe I read about some changes to the training program and wonder if that didn't have something to do with the success at Regionals.

No Chapman or Venables today -- except for Schappert, not much in xc from the junior class.

Hope the women have some recruiting success this year.

Redshirting Margey was a brilliant decision. If she turns out to be half the cross country runner that Piccirillo is, they'll be a formidable top two next season.

If women can crack top15 and men crack top 10 at nationals that would be a very successful day. It can be done, but both have to run at their best.

Congratulations to the Villanova XC men and women. I have been impressed at how strong the men have been and seem to be getting stronger. Totally agree with TFE that it is very possible than the men might just "be on the podium." They have performed that well. Tiernan has been outstanding. Basili has impressed - especially his courage in coming back from that injury in the Spring. Big hand for Marcus.

The women have truly surprised. Can anyone honestly say they expected this? Reminds me of the 4x800 at the Penn Relays. "The little engine that could" never stopped trying. As at Penn, it took every member of the squad to keep fighting. Sydney Harris....!!! We have been dumping on Gina because of her poor recruiting, but she can coach. And I believe the young women love her. Says a lot about the program.

I think there may be an interesting dynamic between the Nova women and Gina. I think they have a ton of respect for her and they know she can coach them up. But, I don't know as if they "love" her. Gina is not the most outgoing and communicative person on the planet. She is pretty much all business.

A funny story I have heard is that Gina is not the best in talking to recruits on the phone. I think it is a necessary evil for her. One recruit, who ended up coming to Nova, timed the dead silence once during one of Gina's recruiting phone calls. The most was 38 seconds or something like that. Just dead air, Gina didn't have anything to say and neither did the recruit. Kid still came to Nova, I guess that is all that matters.

novaclassof90, I do not totally agree with your assessment, but it made me smile. And the issue of "love" might be in how one views it.

I have seen Gina in interviews and it is painful to watch since she is so uncomfortable. And I can imagine this can be a real handicap in recruiting. But I believe the VU women really appreciate how much she cares about them. It is a sense, they are aware that she will look after them - like a hen and the baby chicks.. I do not believe she over-trains them. She also tries to make the experience fun and enjoyable. The love her for that. It is a two-way street. Sometimes we communicate with a minimum of words. So it is "love" because I sense it is a lot more than just appreciation.

I think much of the difference between Georgetown and Villanova in recruiting has to do with the fact that Georgetown has and has had a male coach. For some strange reason, women prefer to have men as their boss.

Villanova is committed as an institution to a female coach for the women's team. I wouldn't expect that to change in the future.

Was having a little trouble matching names to faces on the new XC team photo. Young woman standing on far right has to be Sydney Harris. Young woman kneeling on far right is Katie Brislin...?

All of the women ran well, but Sydney Harris was a surprise and will probably be key to Nationals. Came across this interview with her when she finished HS.. Nice. Liked her.

Her bio on the VU site says she is an athletic junior for track, but she has only competed indoors in 2012. Thus, it would seem that she is effectively a soph indoors and a frosh outdoors ...???
