Mid-Atlantic Regionals

Truly impressive.

Last year, McEntee was 16th; this year, 2nd. Obviously the result of a lot of hard work. Congratulations. The same applies to Tully. Impressive. What has happened to Kane?

Women ... Congrats to Akande. Unfortunately no depth after top 3. Soph class is not ready for prime time.

I sort of wish that Akande had redshirted her freshman season of XC and was only a sophomore for this purpose.

This year has gone a little better for the women than I expected. I didn't think they would qualify for Nationals as they appear to have done even with the third place regional finish. I didn't think Lipari and Akande would run as well as they have this year. Next year they will be very strong and could be top 10 finishers.

Cook is listed as a junior, and based on the progress she has made since joining the team, she could be a very strong third runner next year.

Even better, if Angel Piccirillo can finish as the third runner next year, that would make the women even more of a national championship threat as then they'd have four really excellent runners.

I think the women are only one runner away from being a real threat to win next year. I'm confident a rising junior or rising soph will step up. Obviously they are getting great coaching.

Hopefully, they'll get some high caliber recruits for the futrue. I'm more concerned about 2014 and beyond.

One we should look out for at Nationals is Sydney Harris. She hadn't run a single race this season until the regionals and she finished sixth on the team, within seven seconds of Venables. She's only a freshman for XC and it could be pretty interesting if she is just rounding into shape.

It would be a shame if Venables peaked her senior year of high school.

I have expressed some concern about the women's soph class for XC. Chapman finished 33rd. Last year she finished 28th. No improvement. Akande went from 10th to 1st; Lipari went from 16th to 3rd. Cook wasn't even on the competing squad of seven.

For me, XC is all about hard work. You have to put in the miles. Not so sure some of the runners are doing so.

The biggest concern is with Venables. She finished 5th as a senior at Foot Locker XC Finals. In 35th place - a minute behind Venables - was Jackie Nicholas (CT). That same Jackie Nicholas finished 17th for Princeton - 49 sec ahead of Venables. What has happened? Did she really peak in her senior year? Is she running hurt?

Venables is never going to run on a Penn Relay 4xmile. She is there strictly for distance. Last year, one could argue that she was getting over some latent injury, but this year?

Compare VU's soph class with other soph runners. VU doesn't look so good. One should be concerned.
