Mike Piazza - HoFer

That home run belongs more to American history than it does baseball history.

What was his WAR the weeks after 9/11?

Nothing makes a CoDBer prouder than being able to invoke 9/11 to make whatever point they're trying to make.

Piazza left New Jersey for a $2 million condo in Gramercy Park, right in the shadows of the Twin Towers.

Gramercy 2.5 miles away from WTC. It would take an hour to walk there.

Yes but that doesn't fit the ....wait for it....narrative that ESPN is crafting.

What's FoyeEffect's Twitter say about this? Surely that geek has some stupid stat based hot take on Piazza's candidacy.

He came to smokes a few times back in the day. Seemed like a nice guy.

He wasn't a HoFer for helping the Mets to the World Series the year before while slaughtering the ball in two pitcher's ballparks. It was a HR for a 3rd place team that was 8 games back in late september that did it for him.

The Mets were 4 games out with 6 to play in 2001.

Piazza was a HOF for a number of reasons, glad he finally will get in this year.

It takes you an hour to walk 2.5 miles? You are either carrying an oxygen tank or window shopping if it takes you that long.

NYC walking is not the same as walking around a track, dumbass. There would be something like 50 street intersections en route.

Piazza doesn't have any championships and his only WS moment is him being a wimp and not beating up clemens post broken bat. That home run was a big moment in his career, particularly because people still talk about it.

Things average baseball fans know about the 2001 MLB season:
Luis Gonzalez (and the Kim WS blown saves)
Piazza Homer
Mariners/Ichiro 116 Wins.

Things average baseball fans know about the 2001 MLB season:
George Bush's first pitch (yeah tjc)
Mariano's Blown Save
WS Game 4
WS Game 5
Jeter's Flip Play
Piazza Homer
Brett Boone's Bat Flips
Fixed.

That's BS. Here's a signature moment: crushing the baseball for 15 years.
He dragged a rotation featuring Bobby Jones and Rick Reed to the World series.

What is Griffey Jr's signature moment? Being the third wheel for McGwire/Sosa? Wearing his hat backwards sometimes? Breaking his wrist diving into the wall?

So you think more people recall the Piazza homer than Bonds hitting 73?

What about Randy Johnson nailing a bird in spring training? He then had 20 K's in a game in May.
Nomo and Burnett threw no-hitters.
PNC and Miller Parks debuted.
Ripken homers to win his final AS game.
Mussina loses a perfect game to Carl Everrett (one strike away).

Most memorable thing in 2001 season was it was J-Roll's first all star appearance.

My stat-based hot take on Mike Piazza is that he's the greatest hitting catcher of all time while also a better than average defender* and a good pitch framer.

*terrible throwing arm

Piazza was better than the alternatives?

Jeff Bagwell...Trevor Hoffman....? A bunch of compilers.
If I had it my way, the 90's would only have like 5 people...Griffey/Thomas/Maddux/Glavine/Pedro

He came to smokes a few times back in the day. Seemed like a nice guy.

I met him there one night, ADP. My girlfriend (wife now) was guest bartending for her sorority fundraiser or something like that and he came in with his brother or cousin (I don't remember which but I think one of them went to Nova). I'm a Dodgers fan and was a big Piazza fan so it was pretty cool, spoke to him for a bit and he was a good guy.

I met Piazza at smokes as well, his brothers hung out there. Not sure when he "turned gay" but he was really into a girl that I knew that night.
