Looks to me like he wasn't looking up and didn't see the linesman until the last minute. At that point, his replacement player had already come off the bench and the Nashville player was carrying the puck right at him. If Wideman took a wider turn around the linesman, he would have run into the puck carrier and been called for too many men.
I don't think he intended to cross check a linesman. I think he was skating back to the bench and hit the blurry mass that was standing between him and the bench door. His other option was a too many men on the ice penalty.
