With Sheila Reid pulling off a first-ever 5000/1500 double this weekend, and given the previous NCAA titles (cross and DMR), will she ever be more marketable as a potential pro? She's already graduated and what are the odds of another year like this one? I remember that Bobby Curtis said this his winning the NCAA 5000 really made a difference in the monetary value of the professional offers from the shoe companies. Anyone think that that Reid might be tempted (or advised) to consider turning pro?

I surely hope she doesn't, but it entered my mind. I met her parents at the BE Champioships, and I am certain that all options will be weighed. Could she attempt to make the Canadian Olympic team?

From her post race comments it looks like she expects to be back next season. She's already looking forward to running against Emily Infeld and Jordan Hasay in the Cross Country Nat Championships.

Sleepy,

That's great news; Shelia was also quoted as saying her post 1500 interview
was embarrassing since (I guess) she was excited and not composed. I met the team and most of their parents in the Big East XCountry Championships in Syracuse in the Fall. What a classy group of people.

I made a few inquiries with people close to the program, and here's what I am being told:

(1) Sheila Reid will be back for 2011-2012. Not going pro.

(2) Matt Gibney will be back for the fall semester / cross country season only. He's graduating in December and will return home to go to medical school. So, only the 2011 cross season left for him at Villanova. If you see his post-1500 interview on Flotrack.org, you sure do get the sense that he's close to the end of his Villanova career. Not too bad: 2 clutch Penn Relay DMR anchors for CofA wheels, 2X NCAA 1500 all-american, sub-4 mile, etc. He'll be missed.

Reid has evidently committed to run the 1500 at the Harry Jerome International Track Classic in Vancouver on July 1. There is evidently going to be a "national" 1500 and an "invitational" 1500 -- we'll have to wait to see which one Reid competes in.

Great to hear that she is going to be back, I could however see her sitting down with Gina/Marcus and planning out her spring 2012 sked. Gotta believe that she wants to go the Olys, so she should be aiming to peak in mid to late summer of 2012 and not April-June.

I could see them not racing her much either indoors or outdoors. If the tries to be in top shape in the spring, it could really hurt her for a shot at the Olys. Just too long a season for a 21-22 year old.

thx, that answers 1 question. Wouldn't surprise me if she doesn't even run a race until Penn Relays. I would also be surprised if they try to double her again at nat'ls. Get her ready for summer int'l circuit and Olys.

'90,

You don't thinks she would try to lead the LadyCats to a third straight XCountry title? I know we have some holes to fill in the line up.

Whitecat: I think that she'll aim for another nat'l title in XC. But I think they will race her very little in the 2012 outdoor season. I could see spring being a hard training time in prep for summer 2012 and Olys. I could even see her running XC and foregoing her final outdoor season.

In her interview after the 1500 win she mentions how important "Breaks" are during her running seasons and how rejuvenated she feels afterwards instead of really buckling down after big wins.
