Can someone help me out regarding a question from a track neophyte? My friend's son just won the Pennsylvania state PIAA small school 3200 meter race in a time of 9:22. He's a junior (top of his class academically). How does that time stack up nationwide, and is it the kind of time that would make him a Nova target?

That is a very good time. If he can get close to nine minutes, he can basically go wherever he wants. The national leader is at 8:47, but this kid obviously has time to improve and he has a winning pedigree. If your friend's son isn't being targeted by Villanova already, tell him to have his coach contact the coaching staff.

I wouldn't doubt it if Villanova has lesser runners getting money.

Being able to run a fast 2m? Big factor in getting into a quality school even if it's not a ranked time. A school like Williams Brown, BC will be impressed.

TAke a look at the Dyestat rankings if you haven't seen they already and you can get an in depth of runners in your event of interest.
