recruiting 2011

Excattyguy, did some checking. It's true. See link below. Reid put him touch with VU. 1:53.34 (800), 3:45.47 (1500), 8:31.95 (3000), 3rd in National Jr. XC. Good move.

Denault Article

sebastianc, that 1500 time puts him around 4:02.5 to 4:03.5 for the mile -- exactly what they needed to go along with McAtee and Fitzsimmons.

That is a nice pipeline with Carman DM, Shelia, and now this young man.

I agree -- the Denault signing is a big catch. He's the Canadian U-17 1500 meter record holder and was 3rd at Canadian Junior XC nationals. His 3000 PR is 8:31 -- and he doesn't turn 18 for a few more months. One issue that I know Marcus worries about in recruiting is whether or not these guys are early developers or late developers. From the photos I've seen, Denault is no pimply-faced skinny 17 year old (see below, he's in the middle).

VU has got milers coing out the woodwork. Marcus could probably put together a 10 x Mile relay team with all 10 guys under 4:10. Counting McEntee, he's got 7 guys under 4:10 now, with Beamish at 4:10.8 making eight.

Re: recruiting 2011 -- Tom Trainer

I haven't seen any notice of LaSalle High's Tom Trainer (whose dad is an administrator at Villanova) committing to Villanova. However, I note that two days ago he won the Philadelphia Catholic League indoor titles in the mile (4:31.60) and the 3000 (9:05.06). LaSalle also won the DMR, and Trainer would be the obvious anchor, but I am not sure if he did in fact anchor the relay. His PRs are 4:24.65 for 1600, 8:50.20 for 3000. He won the state district title in XC late last year.

By my count, Villanova signed the following T&F folks for fall 2011 -- am I missing anyone?

1. Megan Venables (distance/XC) Highland Regional HS (NJ)
2. Stephanie Schappert (distance/XC) Pope John Paul II HS (FL)
3. Courtney Chapman (distance/XC) Fayetteville-Manlius HS (NY)
4. Amanda Burroughs (distance/XC) Saratoga Springs HS (NY)
5. Leanne Tucker (middle distance) Tewksbury Memorial HS (MA)
6. Qualitra Brown (sprints) Kings Fork HS (VA)
7. Alex Wasik (PV + heptathlon) Medina HS (OH)
8. Elbert Maxwell (jumps) Hayfield HS (VA)

Not sure about:

9. Tom Trainer (distance/XC) LaSalle College HS (PA)

Leanne Tucker ran 2:09 plus last spring. She is apparently sitting out this winter with an injury that isn't serious but needs more physical therapy. In a post on another site (I'm guessing by her coach), it says Coach Procaccio helped figure out the problem I also saw a good 400 time on a relay leg.

Re: recruiting 2011- Sydney Harris

Another female distance runner - Sydney Harris, St. Mary's, Colorado Springs, CO., 5'5" 115 lbs

I would say this is strictly distance. All-State 3A division. Finished 4th or 5th in 3A state XC championship.

Check out her stats om MileSplit. Determine what you think are her possibilities at VU.

Note: The recruiting class has added some very nice distance runners, but nothing that really stands out. Still haven't addressed the need of a second outstanding distance runner. Venables takes care of one. But where is the other? VU loses Smith and Marino.

Re: recruiting 2011- Tom Trainer

Well, Tom Trainer ran a huge 14-second PR in the state 3000 finals (dropping it from 8:50 to 8:35), and he gave Ryan Gil a hell of a race. Gil dropped his PR as well, from 8:36 to 8:34. He also ran the first leg of LaSalle High Schools 4 x 800 squad that finished 3rd in the state. We're waiting to hear if Trainer will be joining the Villanova squad in the fall.

Kiki Litvak: Pole Vault

Not sure if this one has been listed yet. Kiki Litvak, from Weston high school, Weston, CT has signed with Villanova. She's an 11'0" pole vaulter (January 2011). She won an indoor state title in Connecticut this year.

Re: Rob Robbins - Javelin

See link below.

Rob Robbins (Northeast Bradford, Rome, PA)will throw javelin for VU, next season. Recently threw 206'11.5" (which, at the moment, is close to the state record and leads the nation). Also LJ and TJ. Appears to be a walk-on. Is also a starter (forward) on basketball team - all-conference.

Re: Robert Hurlbut - XC, Distance

Robert Hurlbut (McQuaid Jesuit, Rochester, NY) was class A XC champion. About 21st in state indoor 3200. All-Rochester indoors. Appears to be XC and distance.

Re: Robert Hurlbut - XC, Distance

I have not seen any times this season for either Venables or Tucker for the LadyCats; are they both still injured? I hope Gina still has some ships left for the '12 class. There are some potentially great juniors from our recruiting area. I hope to see some of them in Rochester at the NY states next weekend. Burroughs from Saratoga and Chapman from F-M have run some good times recently. And Artis, the F-M coach, spoke at VU for a clinic run by Marcus.

I'm trying to remember what I read in the paper a few weeks ago. Venables won the 1600 and 3200. It was her first action in a while. Her 1600 was 5:08.

Re: recruiting 2011 - Rob Robbins

Speaking of the PIAA state meet, I hope Marcus is recruiting 11th grader Drew Magaha of Upper Moreland. Kid broke the state record in the 1600 yesterday with a 4:07.

Re: Recruiting 2011 - Tori Catanzano, TJ

Tori Catanzano (Central Catholic, Lawrence, MA) TJ in 38'3" (65th in nation). Also PV (9'6") and LJ (15'6.25").

Appears to have been a gymnast during first two years - Boston Globe All Scholastic honorable mention 2009 - competing in track & field only during past two seasons.

Re: Recruiting 2011 - Kathleen McPhillips, PV

Kathleen McPhillips (Carlisle, PA) PV - 12'1". Finished tied for 3rd in state championships. Also LJ (18' 3/4") and TJ (37' 7 3/4").

Re: recruiting 2011- Tom Trainer

By way of an update, 2011 incomer Tom Trainer won the Philadelphia Catholic League championships at 1 mile (4:19.91) and 3200 meters (9:30.00). He then won the District 12 championships at 3200 meters, and was the only kid at Districts (May 18-19) to get a state qualifying standard (SQS). He then got 4th at the Pennsylvania state meet last weekend in a nice PR of 9:18.67. So, at 3200 meters he went 9:30.00 (PCL), then 9:23.56 (District 12), then 9:18.67 (State). To compare nationally, Trainer's PR is still about 30 seconds off the national leader (Billy Orman of Arizona, 8:48.63) and 25 seconds slower than Edward Cheserek (8:53.65) from St. Benedict Prep in Jersey.

Re: recruiting 2011- Tom Trainer

It is interesting to see the huge disparity in quality of middle dist/dist times for district 12 (philly cath and public leagues) vs. District 1 (philly suburbs). Wouldn't expect much in terms of philly public league and distance running, but I am a bit surprised by the lack of talent for the philly catholic league.

District 1 really has a lot of talent in it (helps that it is a huge district) and they seem to really do well when it comes time for the PIAA meet.

Re: recruiting 2011- Tom Trainer

'90,

I imagine that Trainer isn't a scholarship since his father works at VU. Could he be a surprise such as Kerrigan? I do not know. Generally the Pa distance kids don't stand up well in comparison to NY and NJ, and I know there are exceptions. Cain at 2:05/8OO; could she be another young girl who has loads of potential but has already peaked?

Re: recruiting 2011- Tom Trainer/Courtney Chapman

Chapman ran a PR 4:23 today behind Cain and Cuffee in the NY Championships in the 1500. As a freshman is Cain superior to Kim Gallagher? But she is tiny as so is Jordan Hasay from Oregon. I know there is no body type for runners; Erin Donahue is a perfect example. But will Cain reach her peak very early. Burroughs from Saratoga didn't make the finals in 800 meters; I think her PB is about 2:12.

I haven't heard anything lately about either Venables or Tucker. Does anyone have any numbers about any recruits on either team team. My high school English teacher was Tup's brother. He was great at planning tactical races for his distance runners; obviously Shelia is a master at tactical running.

Re: Recruiting 2011- Charlie Kido, PV

Charlie Kido (Skyview - Nampa, ID) - pole vault, 15'0". Is state 4A champ. Also plays football - RB/DB, 5'11" 175 lbs.

Re: Recruiting 2011- Charlie Kido, PV

do we have any intriguing mens sprinters coming in for this class?

Re: Recruiting 2011- Charlie Kido, PV

It's always going to be tough for Nova to get any sprinters/jumpers. The studs want to head to the SEC/ACC/Texas/So Cal/AZ where they can train outside 12 months a year. At best, we may be able to get a guy who can score points at the big east meet. Seems like Marcus' goal is to always have 1-2 guys who can run a good 400M for the DMR. 100/200 guys are tough to get for us.

Re: Recruiting 2011- Charlie Kido, PV

i'm basically talking about the quarter mile, because with young guys like ellison, hines, and bowers, the 4x4 has the potential to be good at the big east/regional level.

it would have been awesome if terrell wilks had been allowed to stay at VU for football and possibly ran track, because he was awesome at florida.

Re: Recruiting 2011- Charlie Kido, PV

Another 400 kid who cannot run a decent 800 for us is not much help. We are not a sprinters' school; we are a middle and long distance team.

Re: Recruiting 2011- Charlie Kido, PV

Considering that top sprinters head either south or west (like nova'90 said) it is surprising that VU ever gets a credible 400 man. However, Marcus keeps trying to strike gold with guys who might blossom in college. Eckman was a very good 400 guy who actually developed into an outstanding 800 guy. More recently he did strike gold with Elvis Lewis who won a few BE championships and could compete at the national level. He tried with Garrett Kroner (NJ), who never developed. Seemed their might have been injuries. In 2009, he recruited Andrew Burt (NJ) who never showed anything and was gone the next year. And last year, he brought in Cortlandt Harris, who was gone by the Spring semester. Don't know what happened. Several years back, he signed a kid from South America. Can't remember the name or the country. The kid was outstanding in HS, but developed some ailment with his foot and never did anything. Oh yes, last year, Marcus thought he had a crack at Patrick Farmer (NY). Truly outstanding runner who had been a soccer player throughout HS and took-up track as a senior during the indoor season. Kid choose a full ride to Virginia. Thought he was definitely coming to VU because his sister had graduated from VU and a lot of kids from St. Anthony's come to VU.

My point: Marcus is trying given the contraints. Just is not having any luck. So I expect Marcus to find a 400 guy for this recruiting class.

BTW, there is a freshman who didn't compete much, Jonathan Hayes (NH), who primarily played baseball and golf during HS, but ran a little track as a senior (won a few medals). Marcus was impressed with his potential and invited him to join the team. He is a non-scholarship athlete - as is Bowers, I believe. Again, Marcus is trying to find that diamond in the rough.

The Wilks thing was truly unfortunate. That was a gift from the track gods.

VU might be a mddile distance school, but it sure would be nice to have a competitive 4x400. And it is possible. Let your mind wonder a little. Not easy, but possible. Plus, you have to have a very good 400 man for DMR. If he would come, I would gladly offer Steve Solomon (AUS) a full ride.

Princeton has a competitive 4x400. VU should be able to do the same.

I don't know what Marcus has recruited or is recruiting (remember Ellison was signed late), but there are some great possibilities for next year - e.g., Nagee Glass (NJ). But maybe if Marcus can sign an outstanding 400/800 guy it might encourage an outstanding 400 guy to come.

Whitecat, there is an outstanding 400/800 guy who wou;d be perfect. Graduates next year. Has legitimate 400 chops (47.0) and recently ran a very good 800 (1:50). Hope Marcus has him on his radar. Might even be a good student.

best memories of Penn was us winning The Championship of America in that event. In my senior year our team won the event and was honored this year by having their names hung on the Wall of Fame. The team was composed of Georgie Sydnor, a sprinter. Ronnie Delaney, a miler, Charlie Stead, a high jumper, and Eddie Collymore (Sp.), a true quarter miler. I was class of 1958, and I don't know how many years I can continue the drive down from Central NY.

whitecat- 1957 team is considered to be one of the greatest track teams ever... happy/jealous you got a chance to see them in action.

Re: Recruiting 2011- Charlie Kido, PV

I was very surprised to see that little Delaware State was able to put together a 4x400 team this year that made the finals of the NCAA Championships. They finished last, but they still were able to run a 3:04 in the prelims. That's pretty darn impressive for a northern school w/ virtually zero resources. No idea where they got their 4 guys from?

Re: Recruiting 2011- Charlie Kido, PV

Nova'90, there is a huge gap between Villanova and Delaware State academically. Still, I am one of those who believes VU should be able to field a competitive 4x400. Just have to be a little creative. Again, if Princeton can do it, so can VU.

Re: Recruiting 2011- Just Some Thoughts

This is all supposition so do not attach too much credence to this unless you know more ...

Marcus has yet to post the list of signees or incoming athletes for the forthcoming year. One can put together the list of the women, but virtually nothing for the men. Yes, there is Denault, Maxwell and Trainer, but then what ...? Figure Marcus is still in the hunt for something fairly big and in all probability it is foreign. I know LSU-Nit has it on good authority that Mark English (IRL) is not considering coming until Fall 2012. And I am not disputing his assessment. But maybe that has changed. Have to believe Marcus' trip in April was for that purpose - try to pursuade English to come this year. One does not go that far for nothing. English is reluctant to leave home, but must realize that Marcus and VU would be good for him. Just a thought ...

More immediate though are two names:

Ryan O'Connor - Northern, MD - 800 - 3200, XC, anchors 4x400

Michael Williams - Dematha, MD - 110H, 400H, 400

There is some possibility that these two are coming to VU, but I am not sure. Unable to verify. Check-out their stats on Google.

Williams is particularly intriguing. Had a full ride to Maryland as football player, but asked out because he fell in love with track and had some success. Do a Google search. No record as to whom he has signed with.

Just some thoughts. If others know more, please chime in ... Right now, checking some of my own sources.

Re: Recruiting 2011- Rob Robbins

I haven't seen Venables name at all this outdoor season; did she run at all?

Has anyone put together a comprehensive list of men's and women's recruits for 2011-2012?
