The Cats have dropped to #4 in Kenpom, with the #15 Offense and #11 Defense. They also dropped a slot in the RPI to #2, trailing Oklahoma.
SAINT JOHNS
Kenpom #253 (#318 Offense / #136 Defense)
7-14 Overall (0-8 Big East)
Big Wins: #271 Rutgers, #33 Syracuse
Losses: Yes
It’s been a rough year in Jamaica Queens, as Mullin tries his hand at turning around the Johnies. Say what you will about this team, but at least they beat the two teams I hate most. St Johns is not projected to win any individual remaining game… yes not even DePaul at home.
OFFENSE
Shot Distribution: 30% Rim /37 % Mid-Range / 33% Three
· Kenpom #318
· It’s just bad, in pretty much every aspect.
· #284 in Turnovers
· #340 in Steals
· #287 in 3pt percentage (32%)
· #337 in 2p percentage (42%)
· #308 in FT Percentage (65%)
DEFENSE
Shot Distribution: 36% Rim / 29% Mid-Range / 34% Three
· Kenpom #136
· #1 IN BLOCKS!!!
· #189 in rebounding
· #229 in Steals
· #239 in FT Rate (putting opponents on the line often)
· #170 in Defensive eFG%
THE “STARS”
This team just doesn’t have the horses right now, but these three freshman are the first building blocks of Mullin’s program.
FEDERICO MUSSINI (6-1) Fresh
· Shot Distribution: 18% Rim /22 % Mid-Range / 61% Three
· I think he likes the right corner three.
· Highest volume 3pt shooter on the team, and connecting on 32%.
· Turning it over way too much
KASSOUM YAKWE (6-7) Fresh
Shot Distribution: 43% Rim /57 % Mid-Range /0 % Three
· All at the rim, shoots 30% in the midrange
· Good rebounder
· Does not turn it over
· #3 in the country in blocks, which is incredible for a 6-7 player.
· Draws a lot of fouls, but converting only 48% on the line.
· Due to the injury to Sima, you will see Yakwe have to play the 5 the majority of the time.
YANKUBA SIMA (6-11) Fresh
Shot Distribution: 56% Rim / 43% Mid-Range / 1% Three
· Shooting 65% at the rim, but 36% mid-range.
· Shooting 39% from the FT line. A shooter he is not.
· #13 in blocks
· Solid rebounder
· Does not turn the ball over
· A very solid freshman. Was having an up & down year prior to the broken hand. If he was playing it would give Mullin a rim protector.
AROUND COLLEGE BB
Villanova fans have really embraced analytics (hey I’ll do anything Jay does). Villanova fans make up 2.3% of all Kenpom subscribers, which is 12th most. But on a school size / alumni size basis, Villanova shows very well.
I think this settles once and for all that Villanova fans are smarter than Syracuse fans. Props to Xavier, Gonzaga, Marquette, Georgetown, Duke, and Wake Forest for punching above their weight. Among the Power 5 teams, Georgia comes in last at #155, tied with the likes of Cal State Bakersfield, Grand Canyon, and Wright State. The Dawgs don’t like numbers, or spelling apparently.
Buddy Hield (Senior Year) VS Steph Curry (Junior Year)
ORating: 127.1 – 117.8
Assist Rate: 15.4 – 40.2
FT%: 90% - 88%
2pt%: 54% - 52%
3pt%: 52% - 38%
I know this comparison is absurd on multiple levels, but it’s fun and the TV analysts have starting doing it. So might as well look at some numbers. Hield is getting it done against dramatically better competition. At 6-4 with a 6-8 wingspan I don’t see why he can’t be a good NBA player. To my eyes he is similar to Bradley Beal, who is 6-3 and also has a 6-8 wingspan.
