I was talking to someone this weekend about Danny/Bobby Hurley and their current situations at URI/ASU. The topic soon changed to "Isn't it a shame that one or both of them didn't take the Seton Hall/ St. John's jobs. Would have been great for the New Big East"
So I started thinking more about both schools. I don't think there is any hope for either of them coming back to national prominence. I think both are victims of the new world order in college athletics. Neither will ever be a serious threat to make the NCAA tournament again. St. John's has 1-2 good years since Carnesecca retired in the early 90s and Seton Hall has never been relevant since PJ left in the mid-90s.
Check the St. John's roster. There is not 1 kid from NYC. Not 1. The whole team is a hodge-podge of foreign players and misfit toys from other parts of the country. Basically, the crap no one else wanted. Spare me the Chris Mullin argument. He's never recruited a player, he's never coached a game (until 10 days ago). I have little confidence that he will make a difference. Kids from NYC have no interest in St. John's. They don't even know who Mike Jarvis or Ron Artest is much less Chris Mullin and Lou Carnesecca. It's a dead program, never coming back.
Pretty much the same thing with Seton Hall.
Throw in the fact that DePaul is a mid-major program (and a lousy one at that), Creighton is a nonentity, and Xavier/Butler are "keep your fingers crossed" programs -- likely only to be good once every 4 years -- this conference stinks.
We should leave the BE ASAP.
