The Day The Music Died

Richie Valens and the Big Bopper along with the pilot.

maybe people shouldnt fly small planes during bad weather?

JFK Jr

This part of the story is pretty interesting........

Carroll Anderson, owner of the Surf Ballroom, chartered the plane from the Dwyer Flying Service. Richardson (Big Bopper), who was affected by the flu, swapped places with Waylon Jennings, taking the latter's place on the plane, while Tommy Allsup lost his place to Ritchie Valens on a coin toss.

yeah Labamba covers that part in the movie.

the plane crash also started the you cant say the names of the deceased before the families are told.

Boppers wife had a miscarriage from emotional stress when she heard it over the radio.

The weather was fine for JFK Jr, nothing more than a summer evening haze. He just didnt know how to play at night with instruments.

Anyway, Buddy Holly was a ridiculously talented songwriter. A genius pretty much way ahead of his time. Lot of greatness packed into about 3 years of recording. Dead at 22. Pretty confident he would have had a sustainable career. Not as sure about Valens and Bopper was basically a gimmick performer. Almost every Rock star since will cite Buddy Holly as a major infulence I think.

and they choose Gary Busey to play him in a biographical movie.

amazing how young they all were. sad.

Interesting, didn't know either of those points.

The guy who played Bob in the movie was awesome.

Never understood Buddy Holly, thought he was vastly overrated. Kind of like ET and Ghostbusters.
Probably underrated actually. Maybe not Sam Cooke underrated, but pretty close.

We are all entitled to our opinion and I thought he was very overrated. Lucky he died when he did, he would have sucked if he stuck around.

He was like 22.

Definitely an iconic figure in rock

an early death always makes the person perceived better than they were because people always feel what could have been. ie Janis Joplin, Jim Morrison, Buddy Holly.

Who knows what would've become of Buddy Holly, but, as Dmill said, big influence on rock 'n roll.

Spot on with Sam Cooke, too. Tremendous voice.
