Great article on Grandland about, how we all know, 4 out 1 in offenses are thriving. How face-up skills are in, back to the basket is out...for at least the traditional skill-sets.
Some of my take-aways and how it relates to Nova...
1) Defenses are more creative, so when there's a switch from a big to a small, you don't necessarily go into the big because of help defense and the charge. The better thought is for the guard to shoot the 3 and the big has a great opportunity to grab the rebound.
2) Defenses are going small because bigs aren't going to hurt you down low. Minus a bad game against NC ST, we were rarely hurt by a big that JVP was guarding. We were hurt a few times rebounding, but that's not what the story is talking about. In the NBA, they're putting 6 ft 7 guys on 7 ft 2 Rudy Gobert, who blocks shots and rebounds, but teams are willing to go 1 on 1 with Rudy in the post (on offense) because he scores at a much less efficient rate.
3) To me, all I kept thinking about was Kris Jenkins or Mikal Bridges guarding 4's. Again, rebounding may be a different story, but I don't think either of them have to worry about guarding the post as a 4 (though again, rebounding may be a different story)
4) I also thought about Kris Jenkins posting up smaller guys, or skinnier guys since he does have those skills. It's how JVP scored 1500 points...because he DOES have those moves...moves a lot of guys do not have. The article talked about Draymond Green and Harrison Barnes posting up smaller or weaker guys and guarding the post against guys 3-4 inches taller than they are.
Again, this isn't saying I want shorter guys and I've said we need more big depth, but this shows that in certain situations, teams in the NBA do it for upwards to half the game (and more) and do it well. I'd also like to have at least 1 big on the court...
