of the regional universities in the North. I just saw that the new U.S. News rankings came out and Father Donahue blew it again. Just like football, he half-assed it and failed. I remember reading that there were enough Ph.D. programs now to be on the national list but most of the Ph.D. granted were in nursing, of all things! That a Ph.D. in nursing even exists is stupid but that Father D thought that granting a bunch of nursing Ph.D.s would get us national recognition may be worse. Next he will want to add bogus doctorates like an Ed.D.

Actually the university has been working to gain national status and I believe we will be considered next year. This is all part of a very coordinated effort led by Father Peter. The key is that when you go for the national ranking, you must be ready as it's very hard to move up once you get on the list. My understanding is we should be ready to go next year and expect to be around top 50 Nationally. Father Peter has done an amazing job as he's been a huge part of re-shaping the university and has well positioned for the future. The Capital Campaign, which has been a huge success thus far, is a large part of the effort. We needed to get the endowment up.

Top 50 I think is a bit of an over reach....Why would you expect that?..isn't it tantamount to moving up to Div 1 in football and expecting to being ranked in the top 20?

You don't get to choose when you move up. There is a periodic review by the Carnegie Foundation, and it happens irregularly every 5-10 years.

Most of our PhDs are in engineering, FWIW.

Top 50 is not unreasonable, only factors that might prevent us from being there are financial. Quality of instruction and students are on par or better than those schools in that cohort.

Yes and we believe we'll fall around this number. Maybe higher, maybe a tad lower. However, I think once you see us re-assigned many will be very impressed. Having the benefit of working with Father Peter and his staff, I've been very impressed. This guy absolutely gets it and has done a remarkable job positioning Villanova in a changing landscape.

Still don't understand how we could expect to get in above 200 if we are just now cracking the list now.

We wouldn't try to move up to national status if we were going to be 200 on the list. Trust me, we expect to come in much better.
