Wheeler

Did anyone save the thread from a few months ago when all the Mets fans had them winning a WC this year? That thing was pure gold.

I guess we'll need to turn the clock back on the Mets rise to power another couple of years.

This should serve as a warning to the helicopter parents and youth/high school coaches who have no problem with having kids throw hundreds of innings a season while they're still growing.

Specialization in youth sports is a massive problem.

Is there any topic you don't have a know-it-all opinion on?

Disagree. There are more pitch count limits and mandatory rest precautions than ever before.

Maybe in little league, but kids are playing more games for more teams. My son is 10, loves baseball, and is one of the only kid on his team who ONLY plays little league. These other guys are typically on an AAU team.

My neighbor across the street is a stud pitcher. He got drafted out of high school but signed with Virginia and is a freshman on their team. Our families are very close so I got to see his process in depth. These kids have very structured routines including lots of work away from the game situation. Tommy had throwing programs designed mostly through his travel team. He also had regular throwing sessions for scouts. So the games are controlled but these kids throw a ton beyond just the regular season- travel ball. Once he signed with UVA his college coach became involved in the workout routine. My sense is that if you have the means-ability, it is very controlled. However, I can see how these pitches add up.

Yeah, if you're with a decent team from an early age, you have a throwing program to keep your arm stretched out and help build strength. They're not redlining it for 150 pitches 4 nights a week as some of the chicken littles in this thread would have you think.

1. Those restrictions came after Zack Wheeler played amateur baseball.

2. Those restrictions only matter if the kid is playing in one league. There are kids who play for their school, a local intramural league, a travel league, and then a fall league.

3. Specialization has led to kids that are throwing harder than ever at earlier ages due to advances in things like strength training and biomechanics. Naturally, the harder you throw, the more torque gets placed on your elbow.

Was more like they can make playoffs, which is still true.

Anyway, no need to wait. Rotation is fine putting Gee back in, and that's without Matz or Syndergaard, which will probably be later in the year. I guess the silver lining with Wheeler is that if all goes well, he will pitch for many years without dealing with the TJ issue, ditto Harvey.

I thought this thread was going to be about Chris Wheeler, former Phils broadcaster.

Guilty as charged. In my defense, he's been broadcasting baseball games for like 40 years. Zack Wheeler isn't even the best righty pitcher Wheeler in recent memory (Dan).

I'm pretty sure I read overuse injuries in youth sports in general are on the rise. I'm suspsecting that its just general overuse since all sports, even baseball in the northeast, are pretty much year round at this point.

Only in the CoP does this sentence not need further clarification.

Get any fresh tats on the pilgrimage, arak? A Pat Burrell calf piece, maybe?
Honestly, I have never seen more bad tattoos and people smoking in my life than I did down there. Holy crap there were so many trashy people.

I had never been before so I am glad I went, but I was a little underwhelmed overall. Traffic is absolutely brutal in Clearwater Beach.

It amazes me that so many CoPers save up all year long and for the only vacation that they get that doesn't involve a boardwalk... and they choose to spend that time and money to go to lousy Phillies games. Something that they can see 81+ days a year in their own town.

Starting to sound like the Hinkie plan.

From what I've seen, you're not "fine" putting Gee back in your rotation, although if Ryan Howard remains on the Phils I'm sure he'll be happy about that, he's about the only pitcher in the league that hasn't figured him out yet.

And by WC I meant Wild Card, wasn't suggesting there were higher aspirations in that thread.

Gaining Harvey and losing Wheeler is still a net positive in terms of wins. Now, everything depends on how David Wright does this year. The team's performance last year without Harvey and with David Wright playing like dogshit was still pretty decent. Positive run differential, etc.

Just curious, what's the catalyst for David Wright improving his play at this point in his career? With PED testing being what it is now, doesn't seem like many guys with big long-term contracts see any such improvement at his age or older. Wright peaked in '07 or '08.

The Mets to the playoffs arguments were all built on pitching. You just swapped Wheeler for Dillon Gee this year. Guy throws BP in games. Good luck with that.

He tried to play through a shoulder injury last season and 2012 and 2013 were two of the best seasons of his career. Not unreasonable to expect him to play better than last year.

Gee is not exactly spectacular but he certainly does not 'throw BP'. That's just ignorant. And they don't really replace Wheeler with him - they replace Wheeler with Harvey, who was missing, and move up Jon Niese a spot. Gee is a 5th starter and if he doesn't cut it we'll see Matz or Syndergaard there. Harvey, deGrom, Niese, Colon, 5th ....It's hit for sure, but if one of the other kids can step in, they should still be ok there. Edgin was a hit to the pen as well.

That's probably true, but just because he's not an eight win player anymore doesn't mean that he can't be valuable.

Agree.

I've always been a fan of Wright. Good player.

I read that with the wall moving in (for the 2nd straight time), the Grandyman would have added 9 additional home runs to his last years total if this wall move had been made before the year. Obviously it's not that simple because he's not going to repeat those exact hits on the spray chart, but I would predict a nice uptick in HR's for him. See him as a potential late value sleeper in fantasy baseball who could add some additional power and play.

FYI just spent a solid minute trying to figure out how "thoughs" was not a word. I think I might need a personal day soon.
