So when are south Carolina and mississippi going to remove the confederate flags from their government buildings?

I am not sure about the double 'remembered' . Doesn't that suggest that the dead confederacy, killed 150 years ago, is back? The Confederacy Remembered means it's dead. Remembering a Remembered is like saying the death itself is dead, therefore it is back alive.

And yes, I do feel like spg190876ers right now.

should Lincoln have hung Lee and Jeff Davis? i think he made the right choice by not killing them but having them live out the rest of their lives in shame. the Irony is Lincoln was the one killed. sad day in American history. that and JFK being shot.

Just remember, it's not the "Civil War"; it's the "War of Northern Aggression"

other than the coasts of Carolina's and Georgia the south is a terrible place. never forget that.

Lee would have been deemed a traitor by his home state of Virginia if he had joined the Union when he was asked. State pride and loyalty was a big deal back then.

You guys are funny when it comes to the South and have probably never lived here. Just the usual stereotypical comments.

The numbers don't lie. Nine of the ten states that get the most federal dollars and pay the least... can you guess? High divorce rates? South. Murder rates? 5 of the top 7 highest murder rates in US. . Education? SH!TTY.

You know why things are stereotypes? Because they are true.

Been sucking off the teet since the TVA.

Robert E. Lee is the tragic hero of the Civil War. He basically prevented a post-surrender armed southern insurgency by himself and if he had been tried and convicted of treason, reconstruction would have been even worse.

Another war would have started...guy was a god to his soldiers.

Anyway, on the topic of the South, their problems are no different than the Rust Belt...if there are no well-paying jobs, there is no way to fund schools, educate the masses, etc. All the smart people leave these areas to go where the good jobs are, leaving the rest of the uneducated to wave confederate flags, cling to guns, and ban gays from being gay.

Yes, Liz, I am from Nj. I've also lived in NYC, LA, ME, FL, NC & SC. I think these guys who want to use a broad brush to criticize the South are just blowing smoke. Chicago & Detroit have more murders than any southern state. If the South is as bad as guys like 5.0 say, then why are people and companies moving in droves from the North to the South. That silly line about southern states sucking tax dollars from northern states doesn't take into account population numbers. Then, we have an instance like the medical research into a cancer cure going on at Duke, a SOUTHERN university. So, A lot of the stereotypical things pushed by northern "elites" are simply not true.

The guys who is leading the cancer cure, Gromier, is a German doctor with additional education in.....New York. Another guy, is from the mid west and the University of Chicago. And the leader, Henry Friedman? Educated in the State University system, New York.

There is nothing silly about the south soaking the rest of the nation for tax dollars. It has NOTHING to do with population - it has everything to do with GDP contribution and pulling their own weight. I give NC some credit - they have transformed themselves with the research triangle and are inching their way towards contribution. Full marks. But let's not start touching ourselves just yet there. The rest are a friggin anchor on the producers - and that makes them socialist no matter how you look at it. The ones you call 'elites' are also the ones who founded the place and are now paying for you. Just say thank you.

Speaking of Duke - outside of NC, do you know what 3 states produce the most Duke students? NY, NJ and CA. A southerns university populated by kids form the NE.

Detroit has the highest non-negligent homicide rate of any city in America with more than 100,000 residents.

You do realize, 5.0, that a lot of what you call "sucking" is mandated by the Federal government?

No, it MANDATED by the inability of these states to educate kids adequately and produce talent that creates meaningful jobs, salaries and industries.

Please do not blame the fed for Mississippi needing welfare. That's a cop out. Yeah, blame the 'elites' that actually take education seriously and are working and creating wealth to support deadbeats.

This chart for the most recent year, 2013, released by the IRS completely disproves 5.0 rants about southern states "sucking" money from the north.

The sun has the highest non-negligent chance of rising in the morning.

Non-negligent homicide = voluntary manslaughter/murder. Tjc's point was correct with regard to Detroit.

Mississippi could hang this flag from every building, government or private, in the state and it wouldn't make a difference. The place would still be a $^!+hole.
