What's Next?

A season of collapses and inexplainable losses came to a fitting end with one final flameout in the Big East Tournament, marking a third straight disappointing season for a program that was just a few years ago the envy of the sport. Naturally, this has produced questions about head coach Kyle Neptune's job.

There is heavy chatter that the decision has been made and that the program will move on. That chatter also indicates an announcement could come no later than Monday. That would make sense if that is indeed the direction the administration goes, as the portal will be opening and there will be a ton of work to do with the roster regardless of who the coach is. You definitely want whoever it will be to be in place as soon as possible, even more so if it's a new coach who will have a plethora of other tasks in addition to roster management as he gets established.

It can be hard to get a read on the administration at times, and the way it generally operates means curveballs shouldn't be surprising. But I would be very surprised if they don't move on and if things don't move very quickly here over the next few days to a week.

Cats Collapse Again in Loss To Georgetown

We've seen this movie before.

As I mentioned in the previous thread, I was unable to watch the game because Peacock sucks, but a simple look at the game log tells the story. Villanova led by nine with 3:43 to play (93.9% win probability) and proceeded to give up a 13-2 run to relinquish the lead before losing on a layup with five seconds left. I don't even know what to say anymore.

It looks like it was a pretty ugly game for the most part, with Nova starting 1-9 from three and struggling with the Georgetown zone based on what I heard from people who were at the game. The Cats shot just 29% from three while allowing Georgetown to connect on 45%. Georgetown was +18 from beyond the arc. The Wildcats were also an uncharacteristic 11-16 (69%) from the free throw line.

From the 8:53 mark until the 3:43 mark Villanova outscored the Hoyas 16-3 before the collapse.

At-large NCAA Tournament hopes were already essentially a pipe dream, but they are officially dead with this latest debacle. The Cats will have to win the Big East Tournament to end their tournament drought. Almost unfathomable the way this team has managed to lose games this season.

GTown Game

So shockingly stupid Peacock isn't working for me so I guess I can't watch the game. If I would have realized before yesterday it was a ridiculous streaming only game I would have gotten a credential, but I didn't realize the Big East had given into the greed and sold out to streaming services. As such, postgame coverage will be light, although I'll see what I can extract from the box score. Apologies for the inconvenience. Streaming exclusive sports are dumb.

No Coverage Friday

My apologies, but there will likely be no coverage of Friday's game against Marquette. I will be out of town. In the off-chance I do actually get to see most of or all of the game, I'll post a few notes, and I will try to find time to get some postgame comments up, but not sure how likely either of those things are. So, if you don't see anything tomorrow night, that's why. Regardless, we'll be back to regular programming for Seton Hall on Wednesday. Thanks for your understanding.

Providence Note

So I'm battling a 102+ degree fever this evening but was going to try to get through this game to hopefully give a little insight and pass along quotes, but I'm not going to continue to make that effort with what we're seeing on the court.

At the time of writing, Providence is winning 46-24, is on a 10-0 run and Villanova hasn't scored in the first 4:03 of the second half so far. Providence has more threes (11) than Nova has total field goals (8). Frankly, it's been a pathetic effort at both ends of the floor and is completely inexcusable following Wednesday's result over St. John's.

As I said, I'm having enough trouble trying to stay conscious through this game with the fever, so at this point I'm going to go ahead and get the rest I need and that will hopefully have me back to normal sooner than later. Apologies we won't have the usual postgame coverage...I tried but this is ridiculous. Maybe my decision will spur a magical comeback lol.

Cats Snap Skip, Beat DePaul

It certainly wasn't the most inspiring win, but it was a win.

It was kind of a weird game that just felt like it lacked juice. I don't want to sound like I'm criticizing the guys' effort, because I think they were putting forth effort and you don't hold a team to 31% shooting without effort, but I don't know, it felt like watching a game between two teams that knew they had nothing to play for. Am I off base there? Regardless, certainly not in a position to be picky about wins and it was a good defensive showing even when accounting for opponent.
