Extra little nugget

Bilas just said UNC is the best team but should not be #1 on Monday because of Ville loss this week. Also that Nova should be #1. I have a feeling about 5 different teams will receive #1 votes. Also, the NFL season will be over in 26 hours, this is when more people than just hoops heads pay attention to college basketball. And wouldn't you know your Villanova Wildcats will be the #1 team in the country at this juncture.

Eagleye5 channeling Jay Wright

One of the reasons why I do not post after a loss is because of the raw emotions of it. After the Providence and UVA games I said those losses aren't the worst thing in the world. Losses can be great teaching moments during the season in college. Jay said post game today the exact same thing. College kids can lose attention to detail when you keep winning. In the past 3 years I do not think we have lost back to back games. That is a tremendous accomplishment and Jay and the staff should be commended, don't get too high and don't get too low. We all hate it when we lose but a loss here or there helps the staff get the players attention. I really hope we have a run this year simply for the fact that what this program has been doing over the past 3 seasons is historic. But without at least 1 deep run, this program will NEVER get their just praise they deserve.

Bentil and Jenkins

What happened under the basket between them? They replayed Bentil's made basket 5 times and you saw both of them on the floor, but you never saw what happened when BB got up and looked back down towards Jenkins. Bentil talks a ton so I would imagine that something was said. Jenkins is our most vocal/boisterous player, but that doesn't mean he is a trash talker. He isn't and I wasn't implying that. Arch is our leader and he leads like Chase Utley, never engages with the other team, just onto the next play. I wish the national media would pick up on this. Sports anymore is all about the celebration of the individual and we have the essence of a team.

This was no Barry or Chuck Game.

Reynolds can play.

He will not be a double/double machine but the kid will continue to contribute.

I think Barry Beckhadam and Chuck Everson each had one game like this in 4 years.

This kid is more solid.

He will not start over Spellman next year but will be a major factor.

It also shows those Bigs out there that don't go to UK, Duke or UNC that you can come to Nova, develop your game, wait your turn and then make an impact in the college game.

Next in line, in this mold, Delaney and then Painter.

Felt great for that kid today to capture the spotlight.

Random thoughts

1). Ochefu injury could be the best thing to happen to this team. Real minutes for Reynolds are incredibly valuable, we will need him in a game come March.

2). Our offense is at its best when we are slashing to the rim to create opportunities. Feels like sometime we get stuck just swinging the ball around the outside, then having to jack a three.

3). Over the summer would love to see Brunson add some arch to his pull up jump shot. Feels like it is very flat right now, leading to less makes and making it easier for defenders to alter.

saturday in the Big East (2/6)

Feb 6, 2016

12:00 PM MARQUETTE at Xavier (FS1) (X W 91% 15 Pts)

2:00 PM DePAUL at Creighton (FSN) (Creigh W 87% 12 Pts)

2:30 PM VILLANOVA at Providence (FS1) (Villanova W 67% 4 Pts)

4:30 PM Butler at St. John's (FSN) (KENPOM: Butler W 81% 9 Pts)

9:00 PM GEORGETOWN at Seton Hall (CBSSN) (SHU W 75% 7 Pts)

X, the first team in the country to get to 20 wins, needs to hold serve at home in order to be ready to tie 'Nova at the top of the standings in the event of a Wildcat loss. Marquette is sub-bubble and would need to collect a few large skins to get back in the hunt. A road win at X to go with a win at Prov would go a long way. Kenpom gives Marquette little chance of the upset.

DePaul doesn't grab many road wins in Big East play. The two impressive wins they have to-date are home wins over Providence and GW. Creighton is coming off a drubbing at 'Nova and has a ton of work to do to get back on the bubble - a loss here may end any NCAA hopes here in the first week of Feb. They face Xavier next so getting below .500 in league play with an L and then facing the Muskies would be brutal.

'Nova @ Providence is one of the two highlight games on the BE docket for Saturday - the other being the 9PM SHU-GTown tilt. Both teams face the prospect of potentially having to play without their starting 5-man. If Providence wants to remain in the nut for a BE regular season championship, they must win - falling to 5 losses with road games at X and SHU still to come would be too much to overcome. The Cats want to keep posting Ws and hope that X slips up next.

If Butler loses at St. John's - put a fork in them.

Seton Hall appears to be getting into stride in the middle of the BE schedule. 3 straight Ws by double-figures and an avenged loss against Creighton. Now the question is if they can keep that streak going against a BE team that is currently above .500. The Hoyas are leaking oil. A record of 13-10, back-to-back losses, projected to finish 10-8 in the BE and currently sitting at 6-4 … it now seems amazing they won at Xavier given they had their home game against Creighton handed to them on a silver platter - that one fortunate win is the only thing standing between them and losing 5 of their last 6 with the only win being on the road at X. Georgetown's performances have been all over the map. If they get waxed by the Hall in this one, they will be climbing a big mountain down the stretch in league play.
