Seton Hall Game Presser Quotes

Head Coach Jay Wright Opening Statement

A tough BIG EAST game, it was an old school BIG EAST game. Ugly to watch, ugly to coach in but you have to grid those out and find ways to win. I thought our two seniors were tough and the young guys I do not know if they were ready for that physical of a game. We will learn and get better.

Jay you talk about the BIG EAST games being a grid, do you think your teams need that push in the regular season

Wright: I do not know if we need it but we are going to get it. It is coming this year. This Seton Hall team is a really good team and they got a lot of good guys that will be there for a while. We just went out to Creighton and they are a really good team, Xavier, you are going to get in night in and not out. That is what we are going to take from tonight game, there are going to be nights we are not making shots and we need to be able to do other things. I think that we rebounded really well tonight, it got away from us at the end, but I thought we rebounded really well first half especially. Which has not been so good. This BIG EAST conference is a long way from over; a lot of good teams in this league.

Jay in this type of game where the offense isn’t flowing and you had to rely on your defense, and the fact that you did not let them go on a run, how big of a help was that?

I told the guys at halftime I was really pleased with our first half defense. I thought that regardless of what we did offensively thought we could grid it out in the second half. But we didn’t, we didn’t put our defense together in the second half. This is where we are going to learn, learn how tough it will be. Good coaches make adjustments at halftime. I really think our good defense in the first half was really what kept us from being down because offensively we were so poor.

Ryan can you guys tell when it will be one of those grid it out kind of nights like it was tonight

Ryan Arcidiacono: We knew coming into the game that Seton Hall was going to bring it, just every single game that we have watched on tape they have brought a tough mentality. So we knew that coming into the game it wasn’t going to be pretty offensively and we were going to have to get those stops. Like coach said we did that in the first half and it got away from us in the second half when we started to make shots. We let the offense take over us rather than getting stops and continuing what we do defensively.

Daniel, do you like games like this where there are a lot of rebounds and you have to do a lot of dirty work in the paint

Daniel Ochefu: I love these types of games, and I know that our team loves them as well. Our practices are even uglier than this game, it is something we work out every day but we expect that type of game.

Ryan, how much of a help was Daniel especially in those tough stretches, not only on the boards but the offense

Ryan: That is what we expect from Daniel every single day. He does that in practice, actually in practice you can’t really score because Daniel is playing such good defense. We expect that, Daniel is an experienced player and we know every time that we can’t make shots we are going to make straight line drives and try to get him an easy basket. One thing about Daniel is he is improving his free throw shooting and is constant with it.

On tap tonight

7PM Marquette @ Providence FS1
Any advantage Marquette may have on the interior will likely vanish quickly as Dunn takes over and Marquette's Frosh guards get indoctrinated into what playing at the Dunk is like. 85% Kenpom odds on Providence getting the W.

8PM Butler @DePaul Fox Sports Net
Butler is desperate for a W. Sometimes teams may take DePaul for granted. The vet Bulldogs lead Butler to this W. 70% likelihood of Butler win.

9PM Georgetown @ Creighton FS1
McDermott will likely shred Georgetown defense with his O schemes. Hoyas fall to 2-1. 35% chance of a Hoya road win.

Other "most fun" game to watch is Kentucky at LSU. 9PM on ESPN.

Big 5 teams in action:
VCU at SJU (PA) 7PM ... maybe you can catch it on the radio?

Temple @ UCONN 8PM CBS Sports net
"We the T" likely to struggle in this one.

Seton Hall Preview

Seton Hall is an improving team and one that could give a team like us fits. (Though according to some, matchups don't mean anything) But for those of us who understand basketball, the reason is that they have big guards who like to drive and are athletic enough defensively to give us some trouble.

They start 5 sophomores: Whitehead, Carrington, Rodriguez, Sanogo and Delgado.

Whitehead is the main man and likes to get buckets, but he's distributing the ball a lot more as he has 26 assists vs. 9 turnovers in the last 3 games. Whitehead, though, is prone to bad shots (long 2's) and takes a bunch of 3's, of which he shoots 33%.

Carrington is a left who gave us fits last year with his ability to drive the ball to the hoop, make circus shots and draw fouls. He's taking a lot more 3's than last year but shoots a solid 2 point percentage. His usage is up across the board, though he's getting a few less rebounds, mostly because he's strictly a 2 when last year, he played some 3.

Rodriguez, in my opinion, is the team's most dangerous player. Last year as more of a 4 man, he's worked on his outside shot and always had decent handle. His rebounding is down (similar numbers, just playing more minutes) but scoring is way up. Also shooting 3's well.

Sanogo is a very long player and does well on the glass. He's not much of a scoring threat and is turnover and foul prone...he's more of a defender.

Delgado is their main big man and he's added a bit of an outside shot, at least in the 2-3 games I've seen them play. However, his numbers are pretty similar from last year and his per 40 minute numbers are the same, or even a bit down from last year. I think he's a Charmin soft player and can go at him, get in his head and stuff like that.

Gordon, Singh and Nzei are their three bench players and Anderson will get spot minutes as a big. Gordon attacks the hoop and gets to the line but is a limited shooter...Singh is a shooter who rarely shoots a 2 and Nzei is a high energy 3/4 man who makes plays in his 12-18 minutes a game.

As a team, SHU gets to the line quite a bit but doesn't shoot it well. They have a few guys who shoot in the 75-80% range, and a few others who shoot in the 55-65% range. They hit the offensive boards hard, but also give up a lot of offensive boards, so we need to box out and I think Hart can get some offensive rebounds. They've only taken 240 3's this year and shoot 34%, but they pound the rock inside as they've taken a TON of 2 point shots. We need to sag off players a little bit and force them to shoot.

They are prone to turnovers as their top 4 turnover guys all have more than Brunson, who "leads" us with 22 but especially Whitehead has done a little better the past few games. They've been winning with FT shooting and defense...we can attack the hoop against them, even though they've blocked some shots.

I'd probably have Hart start out on Sanogo and Jenkins on Rodriguez so Hart doesn't get into foul trouble and doesn't get bullied by the very strong Rodriguez. Brunson could even guard Sanogo and Hart could guard Carrington as those lefties who drive both scare me due to their build and how they attack the hoop.

We should win, but Seton Hall is playing well and is a pretty good team.

Can you watch Inside Villanova Basketball online?

I live on Long Island and need to subscribe to FCS Atlantic to be able to watch. I have seen the lineup on there and Inside Villanova Basketball would be the only thing I'd watch. I don't want to pay Verizon another 12 bucks a month just so I can watch a few episodes of a show that only airs for a couple of months during the year. If anybody knows where else you can watch please let me know. Grazie.
