latest rpi / kenpom data

This week the Cats play two teams ranked in the Top 50 of the RPI
35 Seton Hall
36 @ Butler

Both teams are also Top 50 in kenpom:
40 Seton Hall
36 @ Butler

Cats are currently #2 in the RPI with:
Top 50 wins: @ SJU(PA) (50), Xavier (1)
Top 50 losses: vs Oklahoma (4), @ UVA (8)

Cats are currently #1 in Kenpom with:
Top 10 wins: Xavier (8)
Top 10 losses: vs Oklahoma (3), @ UVA (4)

In terms of kenpom 4 factors:
Cats continue to grade out well in everything other than:
Off Reb % (Off) 30.5% (170th nationally) - this is partly due to shooting the ball so well
Off Reb % (Def) 32.5% (257th nationally) - haven't kept other teams off the O glass
FTA/FGA - 29.2 (316 nationally) - Cats haven't gotten to the line a lot - in part due to blowing people out to the point where we haven't had a game where we had to win it down the stretch making FTs.

The only other disconcerting stat is 3P% - where 'Nova is at 32.4% (233rd nationally)

Hart is 4th and Ochefu is 9th in kenpom POY standings - he only shows the Top 10 players - the rating scale includes mostly offense, some defense, and is weighted to team success such that the more successful, power 5 teams are likely to have players grading high in the system.

Killing Fields Show

No, I am not talking about Dith Pran and Cambodia, but a new series on Discovery.

Kind of like a Truer True Detective. Since it involved 2 detectives opening a cold case in Baton Rouge (or close to it). Old dude had the case in 1997 then retired, but it got repopened. I think the killer is obvious, but it is worth 42 minutes a week of my time. Entertaining episode 1, only 6 episodes so I will watch it.

more fun for larry brown

now keith frazier has said he is leaving the team because he isn't happy with his role.
SMU is 13-0, ranked about 15 and this guy plays 28.8 minutes a game and scores nearly 12 ppg ...
Nice to see a kid who puts self ahead of team ... best of luck to him playing pro ball in europe or beyond.

Larry Brown and SMU are perfect for each other - an athletic dept. with a dirty history - he recruited a player with the same loyalty he has demonstrated over his career.

Cobb's Creek Clubhouse Remembered

The clubhouse at Cobb's Creek burned down. I played this track once when I was at Nova before I knew anything about public courses in the area. It was, by far, the crummiest course I've ever played. You had to aim for the rough because the fairways were just burned out dirt. There wasn't a single sprinkler on the entire property.

A far cry from the images of this place on the website:

90

I see that it's managed by Billy Casper Golf now, which also manages the county courses where I currently live, so maybe it's gotten better.

Brunson Kudos

In the first few minutes of the game, Brunson really struggled and it didn't look like he belonged out there. He seemed a few steps slower. And yet he came up HUGE exactly when needed. Just when Creighton what turned out to be their final push in the second half, he hit sooo many big shots that effectively stopped every run. His 3s plus his lane drives and pull-ups were so smooth. They were big at keeping lead in 10pt range. I won't have a problem having him with the ball in his hands at crunch time.

OU - KU

Man, when this OU team is focused they are unstoppable. Jumped in the game with 6-7 minutes left in first half. OU down 10. Now up 10 four minutes into 2nd half. Win or lose they are the best team in the nation hands down. So many weapons. Hield is ridiculous and they are deep and talented. Great game to watch.

Bridges

Anyone else as excited as I am about Bridges?

What a hard worker - man oh man - he is a terror on that 3/4 court press - dives for loose balls - defends well - can hit 3s - I think he is going to be a huge contributor over the next 4 years.

And BTW - I LOVED his aggressive move baseline for the dunk - he got blocked (I thought he was definitely fouled - but we had gotten so many recent calls) - BUT - that is something we haven't seen out of our wings in a while - don't get me wrong - Hart has done it - but there was something in Bridges eyes and he went up so strong in traffic - I really really loved seeing that.

Penn State Nits

Sackenberg finally waved the white flag and is getting out of dodge. Can anyone really blame him for declaring for the draft after the punishment that he endured on a weekly basis by that O-line made up of turnstiles and stiffs? He almost got himself killed out there.

Penn State ends the season at 7-6 following a 4 game losing streak.

Did the Nits have a quality win all year? I can't think of one.

YouTube Video & Comments

I was doing a Google search for Dustin Levitz, the Harvard kid who co-founded the Facebook with Mark Finklestein. I somehow got directed to this crazy YouTube video of a punk hassling a bunch of innocent kids trying to each lunch at a Florida HS. The video is well worth your time..but check out the comments left after the video. Some of them are outrageous!

Kris Dunn

I watched "Inside the Big East" last night and they had a story on about Kris Dunn. What that kid has been through in his life is unbelievable. He talks about how his father left when he was a baby and when he was 7 his mother was arrested and put in jail and he and his and his 13 year old brother lived alone in the house for months not wanting anyone to know because they were afraid of going to foster care.

Coach Cooley befriended him and related a similar background that he had.

It is a very touching story and well worth watching if it is rerun. I now have a lot of respect for Kris.

My first game at the pavilion since KK scored 44 versus BC

believe that was Haynes/Wilson senior night in which KK stole the show. A few points:

- First off want to thank a couple of the posters that helped me get tix. very much appreciated and you made my kids vacay. They love Nova hoops and had a great time.

- Not much to say about the game. I don't think X had a chance even with Sumner in there but they totally checked out with him hurt. He is the main reason they are so improved; has had a Lowrly like impact on the. without him, they are very much like last year's team. nonetheless, great win by our guys.
- Said it before, as good as Arch is and was yesterday, Hart impressed me so much. Totally put the game away with an unreal 4 minutes of play. He is not just going to be a pro; he is going to be a good pro!
- Fans were very good yesterday. Very classy, at least the ones around me, during the Sumner injury, and very loud, knowledgeable and passionate throughout. Was very good atmosphere.
- Tried to go to Connolly after the game but was closed so I left my fam there while I ran to my car in the main lot to drive back to Connolly and pick them up( had a 3 yr old with no stroller plus two tired kids and they were tired). The point of my story is that I made i from the main lot to the back of cannily to pick them up in under 3 minutes. All this talk about such bad traffic and and all the complains from Radnor residents is such BS. If that is what they are complaining about for about a half hour roughly 15 times a year.....give me an F'in break.
- The Pavilion: Ok, this is the main point I wanted to make with this post. The redo of this place really should be a priority. First off, I am in the camp that I like the fact that it is small. I don't think we need 9k or 10k and even if we went down to 6,200, I would be ok with that. In my opinion, there is a real mystique and class about Villanova basketball; the history of our program, our fanbase, the fact that there is a waiting list for seats, our consistency. We are probably a top 15 all time program right now and are very poised for long term success. We are not the rowdiest fanbase but again, there is just a mystique and class with us. These are all very good things and I felt yesterday. Off topic a little: I am a Jets fan an have no love for the G-men but whenever I go to a Giants game, I can feel the class and mystique of the organization. Its not as rowdy of a crowd as many NFL stadiums but you feel the stature of the Giants. And I believe the same applies to Nova hoops. We are not the rowdiest crowd nor do we need to be. But what we do need is a facility that shows Nova being the amazing program that we are. And we clearly do not have that. It really is dumpy and I certainly understand that we haven't really done anytying to it in a while and are waiting for a renovation but this really should happen soon. I think the architecture s actually really cool and again, shrinking it is not the worst thing in the world. But it really needs an upgrade in terms of layout, space, materials etc. I'll conclude by saying Duke is as good as anyone in terms of mystique and class and while there arena is beyond old and pretty small, everything in there is pristine and top notch and we should really follow suit. We put $40 MM in that building and we will have a really nice home that we deserve.

OT - Syracuse basketball tickets

Sorry to bother you guys with this but figured I would throw it out there. My daughter is interested in checking out Syracuse and we have a visit scheduled for the end of this month, which coincides with the Notre Dame Syracuse game. I need to get hold of three tickets for that game and was wondering if anyone has any advice on seats. Been checking out stubhub, Vivid seats, etc but I really have no idea what seats would be decent. Any thoughts on 100 level vs 200. Plenty of seats appear available in 200 but considering it is a dome would we be too far away? any thoughts/tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
