How good are we?

Obviously this question will be better answered over the next 3 weeks, but we at least know more about this squad now than before the season started.

Going in I thought we would be heavily reliant on our offensive scoring to carry us past defensive and rebounding deficiencies. So far, our defense is carrying us past our offensive and rebounding deficiencies.

The good thing is our offense isn't bad and I think our offense will improve as the season progresses. Our shooting will not be this mediocre all year, and will average out somewhere close to last year's overall %. We are more dynamic with Arch, Brunson and Booth (plus Hart) as our main guards. It is clear though that having 3 capable PG's creates an incredible advantage. Not many teams can take out a player like Arch and be lead as good or better with a rookie PG in his place.

Defensively, I realize it is hard to make a clear-cut assessment of this squad given who we have played, but one thing that is clear is we are playing aggressive. We are getting a lot of turnovers and forcing teams to take shots with under 10 to go. The new shot clock helps us tremendously. This aggressiveness plays to our strengths, but it takes us out of position for rebounds at times. I think that is a fair trade-off. We could dial back and protect the paint and be in better position for rebounds, but we would give up more perimeter looks and generate less turnovers.

I concerned about big man depth, and it appears losing Delaney is harder on us than I expected. At the least he could play alongside either Ochefu or Reynolds for a few minutes to give additional beef but also some outside offense. Teams are going right after Ochefu, and it is taking its toll on him early. We miss JVP.

Bottom line, I am not sure how the rest of the season will go, but it is clear that we will play very hard on defense as always, and will live and die by what our guards and wings give us. Ochefu could give us 10 or 15 on some nights, but we will still need most of our production from our perimeter guys. We are much like the 2006 squad in many respects. We need to embrace it as fans. I still think we can beat every single team on our schedule. I am very curious to see how we handle the pressure of the OK game. VA I think will be MUCH easier for the mental state of our boys as we will be in a hostile environment. If we lose to OK, VA will be a game they will look at as something to prove to the doubters. If we beat OK, we go into VA with a ton of confidence. Either way I think OK is the swing game and sets the tone for the rest of the year.

Big East Outlook

It's early, and conference play always changes things, but I think the Big East is starting to take shape... Villanova is the favorite, Xavier is the biggest threat, Butler, Providence and Georgetown will compete for bids, while everyone will beat up on St. John's and DePaul.

BIG EAST TITLE CONTENDERS
Villanova
is the king, and the king stay the king. There's no reason to think Villanova will slip right now, though we haven't truly been tested yet. They're a huge favorite to win the league until proven otherwise.

Xavier
looks really good. They crushed Michigan. They crushed USC. They're a very talented, physical team that has real Elite 8 potential if they stay healthy and develop. Our game at the Cintas Center may be our toughest of the season.

NCAA TOURNAMENT CONTENDERS
Butler
looks like a good Butler team. They should be a tournament team, and you never know with that team's history. As long as they are healthy, I feel safe thinking they are a tournament-caliber team, but I don't think they're as good as Xavier.

Providence was a team that was going to go as far as Dunn carried them, but Bullock and Bentil have played well, and Fazekas gives them a shooter they haven't had. I was concerned after the Illinois game, but the Arizona win, even without Tarczewski, has a lot of staying power. They have 3 good RPI top 100 wins in the bank, and a possible top 25 in Arizona, without a loss.

Georgetown is hard to figure out, but I still think that team has too much talent to miss out. Maryland and Duke losses won't hurt them. Radford will, but if they take care of business, they have enough on their schedule to still get in.

THE WILD CARDS
Seton Hall
will go as far as Whitehead carries them, mostly because he takes so many shots and has such a high usage percentage. That's probably not a recipe for success, since he has never been efficient. But if the light goes on, he, Delgado and Carrington is enough of a core that they could make a run at a tournament spot. Only one bad loss against Long Beach State, which I don't think is a bad team. Probably ends up between 50-75.

Creighton lost the game it was supposed to, and beat a lot of cupcakes. Completely blank slate resume, which isn't a bad thing at this stage. I don't think they have enough talent to get to the tournament, but they should be top 75.

Marquette is an extremely young team, but there is talent. The guard position is a problem, and probably too much of a problem for them to overcome, but they also have an NBA talent in Ellenson, and sometimes that's al you need. They have 2 losses, though neither is terrible, and they also have 2 decent wins. They could bet beat up in league play with their youth.

COUNT EM OUT
DePaul
looked like it could be better this year, but it looks like they still are what we thought they were. Got beaten handily by the 2 solid teams it faced, and it also lost to a bad Penn State team. Looks like the 9th straight year they'll end up with at least 19 losses. I just hope they get to conference play at .500 overall or better.

St. John's
is a bad team. We knew this going in, given all their losses. Hopefully they win enough to not be RPI poison.

William and Mary and UNH

William and Mary and UNH must have forgotten they each had playoff games today. UNH shouldn't be losing to Colgate, but for William and Mary not to be crushing Duquesne is unbelievable. I was thinking today that teams like Dayton and Duquesne, shouldn't even be in the FCS playoffs. I thought William and Mary would crush Duquesne and they still may, but if William and Mary loses, it might be the biggest upset in FCS playoff history.

Shooting Sleeve

Watching game the other night, noticed quite a few of our players with the shooting sleeve. Are they all trying to be like A.I.? Then today, there's an article in the Wall Street Journal focusing on the ”sleeve revolution".Seems like 65 percent of NBA players now wear the sleeve.76ers trainer who encouraged Iverson to use the sleeve is now director of sports medicine at Villanova.

Cooley & The Gang / Vu thoughts

Looked good last nite.... Beat a top2-3 mo valley squad Evansville.... Lots of athleticism there....bentil is a beast....

Yes ugly offensive bball yesterday.....tuff to get up for that one.....200 people in attendance....rock solid defense.... .i'm not hitting the panic button... Thanksgiving gift of brunson makes us smile... Panic button ready if we don't show up this afternoon.....

Heisman update

Little Santiago threw for 20 yards and ran for 20 more in Army's loss to Air Force. The loss dims hopes that Little Santiago will become the first military academy QB since Roger Staubach to win a Heisman Trophy. UCONN is up next up for the Cadets, as West Point, having lost to Yale, seeks to avoid going 0 for the State of Connecticut.
