Huskies Add Big Home Invite To Fall Slate

Release: 08/18/2014

SEATTLE - The Husky distance runners are running down the last few days of their summer vacations, before reporting a week from today. The run for the postseason this year will include a new invitational here in Seattle, at Jefferson Park Golf Course, on October 4.

The inaugural Washington Invitational will feature a number of top programs from around the country, including Villanova, Oklahoma, Northern Arizona, Indiana, the Virginia men's team, Portland, and Boise State, as well as a strong Pac-12 contingent including Stanford, the Oregon women's team, UCLA, and Utah. Jefferson Park Golf Course has hosted the 2010 Pac-10 Championships and 2012 NCAA West Regional Championships in recent years, and the Huskies are looking to make it a regular stop for high level college cross country.

Lady Cats get a verbal from the 7th ranked PG

"Paul VI sophomore guard Raven James has committed to Villanova, becoming the Wildcats' first pledge from the class of 2016.

The 5-foot-5 James, regarded as one of the purest outside shooters in the area, helped Paul VI to its first Washington Catholic Athletic Conference tournament title last winter. She made her decision late last week, choosing Villanova over North Carolina State, George Washington and Saint Joseph's.

"It just had the whole package. … The thing that stood out to me about them is that they're not solely focused on basketball, but they'll kind of help you after college," James said. "They sounded like they have my best interest at heart."

"James's role will only grow with the departures of Freeman and guard Lindsey Oblitey, she said, and extra polish is being added to her game this summer with Team Takeover, her AAU team. James is the seventh-ranked point guard in the country by ESPN."

PIAA meet

Marcus should keep his eye out on a kid from my hometown by the name of Demetrius Lanier. He won the AAA 100 in 10.66 and finished 2nd in 200m.

Interesting case. Kid has a dream of going to the naval academy so he really wasn't recruited much, he is also a pretty good football player. He couldn't get into Annapolis so he is going to the naval prep, school for a year. If he still can't get in after that, Nova would be a good place for him. He isn't good enough to draw attention from the big southern state schools and he will probably not get much attention this year at prep school.

Would be a nice duel catch for nova football and track. Link to story on the kid, he is built like a rock.

Banned for life. Fitting punishment for racist,

LA Clipper owner received a just result for his insults to our Black brothers and sisters and fellow American citizens. NBA players threatened walkout in the playoffs and stood tall insisting racist comments have no place in 21st Century America. The hurtful verbal attack on some 40,000,000 Americans is far beyond the pale.

67 years after Jackie Robinson broke Major League Baseball's color ban it's long past time to call out all racists like the loony fringe Tea Party and the crooked Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy and his heavily armed domestic terrorist friends.

Penn Relays

Penn Relays are next weekend. Both the men and the women have realistic chances at DMR, 4x1500/mile and 4x800. I believe performances last weekend and this weekend will go a long way in deciding the makeup of these relay squads.

The results posted at the VU website about Larry Ellis Invitational do not let you know that the VU runners were competing against "professionals." So their performances should be seen in that light. It appears that Margey might be rounding into shape. Schappert has gone past Piccirillo at this point. Is it that Schappert has gotten so much better (good) or that Piccirillo has regressed (not so good) or some combination thereof. Will be interesting. My concern, is as always, the 400 legs for both the men and women in the DMR.

Ellison is team's best 400 man, but if he runs 400, who runs 800?

Fitzsimons DNF, last week. Where is Malone? It almost seems he peaked as a junior indoors.

Based on results, last night, at Larry Ellis Invitational, Solis is for real. That was TFE's contention during indoor season. Lampron was sub-1:50 indoors and ran well, last night. Are they seriously thinking of Tiernan on 4xmile?

BTW, I believe Arkansas women are coming - not men.

This should be in the Recruits thread, but wonder if Siofra C-B is visiting during Penn Relays week or weekend? Penn Relays is where track gets a chance to shine. Forget this "Track City USA" nonsense. That is what Nike would have you believe. give them enough time - and $ - and they will try and the NIke Relays at Eugene. Unfortunately, for them, small town romanticism only goes so far. My rant for the day.

My partners and I will get there Friday morning and stay until the Championship 4x400 Saturday around 6 pm. And the weather looks. Maybe VU has some successes. Would be nice.
