Department of Defense Spending

Loved these two recent stories which reflect the insane expenditure levels in this department.

The first story relates that the DOD built not one, but TWO Hubble-level telescopes....then realized they didn't need them.

The other story I loved discusses the DDG-1000 destroyer program. The first of these ships, costing over $7 billion each (including R&D), is due to arrive in 2014.

The Navy originally wanted 32 of them.....very reasonable. Sadly, they'll have to settle for "only" seven. Just absurd.

How Stupid are Republicans?

Three news items caught my attention yesterday that detract from the public debate on Healthcare and the Economy.

The first was Rush Limbaugh going after the Georgetown Law Student who testified for the DCC last week. The second was Joe Arpaio spending tax dollars to investigate the President's birth certificate once more. Finally was Senator DeMint saying he would rather be the party of the minority if it meant being a pure party.

How badly do the Republicans want to lose that they act like lemmings and follow behind these people? Rush Limbaugh, the face of Conservatism for many in this country, says that women who use contraceptives are "sl*ts" and "prostitutes." (his words not mine)

I guess he doesn't know about all the uses of the Pill.

women's 5000

It doesn't look like Reid is running. Either the announcers have missed that she's not there,or I haven't seen her.

I think I just saw her. They keep cutting away from the race, so it's hard to follow.

New Yorrk State Championships on Saturday

I will be going up Cicero North Syracuse then ; I am especially interested in Margey. She is to seeded in the 800 at 2:08+ while second seed is a nnith grader from Garden City who has run 2:09. Cain is to seeded at the 1500 with Margey is second quite a time behind. Our recruit from Pearl River is well back in the 800 for boys at 1:54+. Are there other names I should be looking for?

The school where I taught for a long time has a soph who is top seeded at the 400 at 49+ in the small school division. He recently had a 1:54+ split in the 4x800. I think he could run 48 something scratch and close to 1:53
for 800.

OT: UB57,

Bo Roberson won a silver in the long jump in 1960 while taking second to
Ralph Boston; he also played eight years or so in the AFL.

Another Time

I was just reading the thread on Alex Reber. Nice times. VU may have something. One of the posts said it would be nice to have a competitive 4x400. Totally agree. Remember they are also getting another 400 guy who recently ran 48.3. I started thinking about the class of 2013 and Steve Gayle (NY) who goes to Mount Vernon HS. Thought maybe it was the Mighty Burner's high school. Great story line beginning: "VU recruits 400m star from former Olympian's high school ..." James went to White Plains. Close. Nevertheless did a Google and discovered the following article in S.I. that I thought some might find interesting.

Villanova Takes 5

Alex Reber

This kid looks like he could be a real "get" to the point where we might just have a competitive 4x4 as soon as next year.

Last week at sectionals
21.64 PR in the 200m
47.96 PR in the 400m
53.78 in the 400H

Group championships are this week, and Najee Glass dropped out of Non-Public A with a hamstring injury, so Reber might just have a chance at winning the outdoor Meet of Champions. Not terrible for a middle distance school.

Piccarilo (sp?) and PIAA meet

Angel walked away with 2 small school state titles and 2 small school state records. 2:09 in the 800 and 4:39 in the 1600M. Both very good times. Her 1600M time is the fastest ever run in either big or small school races in PA. 2 seconds faster than Kim Gallagher back in 1981, and Gallagher was a stud.

I also gotta believe that Gina is going to be paying attention to Gwynedd Mercy School this upcoming year. They had an 11th grader who ran 2;07 and change to win the big school 800M. That is moving for a HS girl.

Mark English goes 1:45.77 in Belgium

Mark English (Letterkenny AC, Ireland) put in a truly top class performance tonight running 1.45.77 to win the 800m at the IFAM meet in Belgium, a new Irish Junior Record. This time improves on his personal best and his old record of 1.47.09 that he set last year. With this run the 19-year old has also achieved the A standard for the European Track and Field Championships and for the World Juniors -- it is also notably very close to the Olympic "A" Standard of 1:45.60. It also moves him to fifth on the all-time Irish list, dropping Marcus O’Sullivan (1.45.87) down a notch to sixth.

I wonder if English is still in play, recruiting-wise. My guess is that he's going to pull a Ciara Mageean and turn pro. If he runs the "A" standard, he's a goner for sure.

Federal Government spends $20 Mil on healthcare PR

So HHS entered into a $20 million agreement to "educate" Americans on the goodness of healthcare reform. Think about this for a moment: the federal government is spending $20 million before an election on a PR campaign for a bill only one party supported. That is unbelievable to me. $20 million of taxpayers money pissed away on partisan political campaigning before the presidential election. Why does this not get more coverage? That's an outrage.

Commencement Address

Who let this bozo speak at the commencement?

Father Peter must go.

"Finally, and perhaps somewhat controversially for an institution based on Catholic principles, Shriver urged the graduating seniors to be the generation that “spends enough time in the school of the heart to heal the age-old exclusion of women and follow our own women-religious as authentic teachers of faith.”

“The creator of the universe, after all, has no gender,” he said. “There is masculine and feminine within all of us that is authoritative, because it was made by the author of life.”

Swarthmore result

McEntee ran 3:36.81 for fourth place. Look up what that converts to as a mile time. Kyle Merber won in 3:35.59 -- Jordan Williamsz 3:36.74 -- Nate Brannen 3:36.77.

That puts McEntee less than a second out of second place. Add Denault, Lampron, and Fitzsimons who is coming around (does Mildenhall have another outdoor season?) and that's a lot of firepower for Penn for the next couple of years.

Marco Rubio

Trying to sure up his Hispanic bonafides. Pushing for government money to fund broadband service in Puerto Rico.

Some Conservative he is!

I don't know who is worse. Rubio or Mignon Clyburn. Yes, that's Congressman Clyburns daughter. Look her up. She's an ignorant fool.

Amazing how the Tea Party will go after Colonel West but not their Golden Boy Marco Rubio.
