Wisconsin All-American Emily Sisson Transfers to Providence

Just saw the below at Flotrack.org -- Emily Sisson transfers to Providence:

Sisson to Providence

Big news in the NCAA XC scene! Our sources have confirmed that former Wisconsin All-American, Emily Sisson, has transferred to Providence College in Providence, RI (it was double confirmed via her Facebook wall...gotta love it). As a freshman, Emily Sisson finished a very respectable 14th place at the NCAA National Cross Country Championships and was Wisconsin's top runner throughout the year. Quiet through most of the indoor season, Sisson returned outdoors to finish 3rd in the 5000 and 3rd in the 10000 meters at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships running season's best times of 16:06 and 35:07 respectively.

Sisson's achievements
If you remember back Sisson's 2009-2010 senior year in high school the girl was simply on a tear! She finished third place at the Footlocker Cross Country Championships and went on to become the 2010 US Junior Cross Country Champion. Representing Team USA in Poland at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Cross Country Championships, Sisson was the top American finishing 18th amongst the world's best junior women. During the outdoor season she went on to run the fastest high school 5k ever in 15:48.91, twelve seconds off Molly Huddle's American Junior record (15:36.96), as she finished 6th place at the 2010 IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships in Moncton, Canada. She added another top 10 finish at the World Championships with her 9th place finish in the 3000 meters (9:16). Her 5k mark was 19 seconds faster than the indoor auto mark for the NCAA Championships.

The New Squad
Sisson will join a Providence team that now looks to be contenders for a national championship. In 2010 the Providence women finished 9th at the NCAA XC Championships and return all but one runner from last year's top seven, which was number five runner Emma Perron (even without Emma the Friars would have finished 10th, only 4 points out of 9th). Shelby Greany, Providence's top runner a year ago, was two places ahead of Sisson to finish 12th place at the Championships. Greany also set the American Junior record in the steeplechase when she ran 10:00.88 to finish 6th at the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Championships (she broke Emma Coburn's Jr record in 2010).

And I wouldn't be a true cross country enthusiast if I didn't give you the "what if"stat. If Emily Sisson had been scored with the Providence team a year ago at the NCAA Championships the women would have finished 5th place with 221 points. Adjusted scores below:

1. Villanova 123
2. Florida State 158
3. Texas Tech 169
4. Georgetown 171
5. Providence 221
6. New Mexico 232

Eamonn Coghlan's son John goes 4:00.79 in Dublin

John Coghlan is seeking to join his illustrious father as a sub-4:00 miler, and tonight at the Morton Mile in Dublin he came damn close, finishing ninth in a fast race, in 4:00.79. That's a big PR and should convince him that breaking 4:00 is very do-able if he gets in the right race. Villanova recruited John rather half-heartedly a few years back.

The only three USA father-son sub-4:00 miler duos (I think only three) are:

3:58.8 Barry Brown 05/13/72
3:59.99 Darren Brown 04/05/2003

3:59.2 Matt Centrowitz 05/24/75
3:57.92 Matt Centrowitz, Jr. 02/14/09

3:58.7 Sam Bair 06/23/67
3:59.72 Sam Bair, Jr. 02/13/10

Another one (with a slight Villanova connection) is:

3:54.16 Kip Keino 08/30/65
3:58.73 Martin Keino 06/04/94

Reid Signs with Agent . . .

Sorry for messing with everyone, but I saw the story headline below on Track and Field News today and thought the worst.

Ali, Henry, Phiri & Reid Sign With Agent Paul Doyle

Doyle Management Group is excited to announce its first round of collegiate signees. DMG will now represent Nia Ali of the University of Southern California; and Tabarie Henry, Gerald Phiri, and Julian Reid of Texas A&M.

DMG CEO Paul Doyle is proud to be adding such a talented group of clients to his agency.

“I’m really excited about the quality of athletes and the quality of people that we have signed. Our four signees epitomize the type of athlete we’re looking for: hardworking, talented, good people.”

Nia Ali finishes her career at USC after winning the 2011 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 100-meter hurdles with 12.63 seconds (+2.1 m/s). Earlier in the season, she won the Pac-10 100-meter hurdle title with a collegiate leading time of 12.77.

Tabarie Henry joins DMG after becoming a 4-time NCAA Champion at Texas A&M. He finished 4th in the 400-meter dash at the 2009 World Championships while representing the U.S. Virgin Islands. As a 20-year-old, Henry advanced to the 400-meter semi-final of the 2008 Olympic Games.

Gerald Phiri concludes his collegiate career at Texas A&M after becoming the Zambian national record holder at the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints. The 8-time NCAA All-American boasts personal best times of 10.06 for the 100-meter dash and 20.29 for the 200-meter dash.

Julian Reid becomes Texas A&M’s third DMG signee. The 3-time Jamaican national champion competed at the 2009 World Championships in the triple jump. He has recorded personal best marks of 8.04-meters in the long jump and 16.98-meters in the triple jump.

Marcus On Recruiting Trail at Irish Schools Championships

Marcus was back home, looking for talent, this past weekend. And handing out trophies, as well. The lad in the middle is Tommy Casey of Sligo Grammar, who won the senior boys 1500 in 3:52.47. To the left is Andrew Monaghan of St Colmans (3:55.05) and on the right is Shane Quinn of De LaSalle (3:56.56).

Earlier this year in March, Quinn (19:03) won the Irish Schools senior boys cross country crown by 15 seconds, with Casey 4th (19:40), and Monaghan 6th (19:54).

Link to the story of the meet, with some results is below.

Irish Schools Championships

Query: Should/Will Sheila Reid Turn Pro?

With Sheila Reid pulling off a first-ever 5000/1500 double this weekend, and given the previous NCAA titles (cross and DMR), will she ever be more marketable as a potential pro? She's already graduated and what are the odds of another year like this one? I remember that Bobby Curtis said this his winning the NCAA 5000 really made a difference in the monetary value of the professional offers from the shoe companies. Anyone think that that Reid might be tempted (or advised) to consider turning pro?

Reid and Gibney both advance...

to NCAA 1500M finals. Both finished 4th in their heat (top 5 from each heat and next 2 fastest times adv.). Gibney looked good, big fall in his heat w/ 400M left took a few guys out of it.

I couldn't tell if Reid was just laying back to save it for the finals or if she was having problems??? She sat at the back of the pack until 600M and then passed 8 women in 200M to get up front. Sat there the rest of the way and let 3 take off in last 200M and didn't go with them. Either a very smart strategy to save it, or she didn't quite have the snap in her lags today. I am going to be an optimistic and say she was saving it for sat.

Bottorff from Duke, orig. from Delaware, won the women's 10K last night. She would have looked really good in a Nova uni. Too bad we didn't get her.

Reid, Gibney, Mimic & Ward Advance to National Championship Meet

Matt Gibney won his heat and had the fastest time of the day today in the 1500 meters. The race was a typical sit and kick, which suits Gibney and his strong kick off a slow pace. He ran 3:46.29.

Sheila Reid also ran the fastest 1500 of the day (4:16.81) and qualified for nationals. Reid also qualified for nationals at 5000 meters (16:17.77). Her time was the 8th fastest of the day (over 2 heats) as she finished 4th in her heat. In the same heat, Bogdana Mimic finished a blink behind Reid in 5th (16:17.96) and therefore qualified for nationals as well.

100 meter hurdler Shericka Ward also qualified for the national meet (Des Moines, Iowa @ Drake University, June 8-11). She was 3rd in her heat and 9th overall in 13.19.

All four of these athletes are making their second trip to the national championship meet.

Missing out today were: (top 12 advance to nationals)

Hugo Beamish: 13th overall (14:10.09) at 5000 meters
Mathew Mildenhall: 15th overall (14:11.16) at 5000 meters
Mahon-Ward-Verdier-McDonald: 19th overall (3:40.17) in the 4 x 400 meter relay
Emily Lipari: 22nd overall (4:33.30) at 1500 meters
Brian Long: 23rd overall (14:29.87) at 5000 meters
Brian Tetreault: 24th overall (3:59.73) at 1500 meters
Ali Smith: 25th overall (16:54.69) at 5000 meters

New Recruits and Recruiting

We haven't heard much lately, but we know the times of the underclass females
such as Cain, Spence, and Margery, but I have not been able to find much about the kids on both teams that we have recruited. Some of them have had injuries, but what about the distance boy from Canada?

Since I do believe that a freshman boy from the school in which I taught for many years has run 1:55 for 800, I will probably go to the NY States. Maybe Chapman from FM will continue to get back to form.

Vote for VU lacrosse's Brian Karalunas for the Lowe's Senior Class Award!

PLEASE VOTE TODAY AND EVERY DAY UNTIL MAY 11th. Brian Karalunas, the All American candidate Long Stick Middie, at Nova is a candidate for the pretigious Lowe's award. Please help Brian by voting for him per the announcement below. You can vote 1X/day from each computer and many hand helds, you have until the voting ends on May 10th! Brian would a deserving recipient of this award. Winning the award would also bring Nova Lax more well earned recognition. Brian was in the lead by more than 8 points at one point but his lead is now, i.e.,midnight onf Thurs. April 21st , is on 1% PLEASE VOTE TODAY AND EVERY DAY UNTIL MAY 11th! Brian needs your continued help. Cuse's goalie, John Galloway ha has closed fast over the past week when he was down by almost 10%. Cuse has a big fan base so its up to us to stop the Cuse from winning this by voting early and voting often! Let's get out the vote for Brian and for Nova!

Brian had 6 takeaways against Delaware and leads Div I of the NCAA in takeaways with an astounding 4.7 takeways per game, a critical statistic for a long stick middie. Week in and week out he faces defends the opposition's top scorers and dominates.

Brian has a 3.93 average in the Honors and Philosophy programs and is active in community service and church activities. IF you click on his name on the url below you can read his impressive bio. Brian is also a Rhoades Scholar candidate. Not to mention he's All Big East and very likely will be an All American this year. What more can we ask for in a representative of Villanova?

REMEMBER: you can vote 1X per day from every computer you can access and for some handhelds. Ask your family, friends, classmates, etc... to vote as well. Please remember to vote every day. Brian is a very worthy candidate for the award and the award would bring valuable recognition to VU lacrosse as well. GO BRIAN! GO CATS! NOW GO VOTE!
