Several Players Expected On Campus This Weekend

When 2020 PG Jeremy Roach dropped his final four last night, which included the Wildcats, we also learned that he will be on campus for an unofficial visit this weekend.

Rivals' Corey Evans detailed that Roach won't be alone, as 2019 commits Bryan Antoine and Justin Moore are expected on campus as well.

With the 2019 class complete, the focus shifts to 2020 and Roach is a great place to start. It can't hurt that he will be joined by two players that have already committed to Villanova, and should be a great opportunity to make a good impression with Roach.

Jeremy Roach Down To Four, Includes Nova

The five-star 2020 PG has dropped a top four, and Villanova joins a who's who of college basketball elite that remain in contention for his commitment. The Cats will battle with UNC, Duke, and Kentucky in trying to land the elite point guard. In addition, Rival's Corey Evans reports that Roach will be on an unofficial visit to the Main Line this weekend.

There were several takeaways from the 2019 recruiting cycle. One was that recruiting is full of surprises and that we never know what will happen, as evidenced by Jeremiah Robinson-Earl. Another is that the Cats are now squarely in play for elite recruits, as they snagged not only Robinson-Earl (No. 10) but also Bryan Antoine (No. 12). Roach is currently ranked No. 17 in the 2020 Rivals 150. It should be fascinating to watch this battle between giants of the college game play out.

Quotes and Takeaways from Media Day

Villanova hosted its annual media day on Tuesday, and here we discuss the biggest takeaways. Coach Wright touched on the potential rotation, whether there will be a redshirt, leadership, and the progress of the young guys, among other things. In addition, Nova Illustrated talked with Joe Cremo and Cole Swider, and also took some notes on the portion of practice we were able to observe.

If anyone has any additional questions let me know and I'll do my best to offer some insight based on what I heard/saw on Tuesday.

Corey Evans Discusses Robinson-Earl

In what is starting to feel like a weekly event, the recruitment of Jeremiah Robinson-Earl once again came up in Corey Evans' Twitter Tuesday column, and this week it was directly related to Villanova.

I have to head out the door for media day, but I wanted to get this dropped in here for everyone, Evans has some interesting things to say. Here's a link to the story.

First 2018-19 Ken Pom Rankings Released

The initial 2018-19 Ken Pom rankings have been released, and Villanova fans should be encouraged by the results...the Wildcats checked in at No. 5.

Coming in ahead of Nova were Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, and Virginia.

Other notable Big East members were Marquette (29), Butler (31), Creighton (33), and St. John's (39). Nine of the ten Big East schools were in the top 68, with DePaul rounding things out at 77.

Ken Pom projects a 23-6 record for the Cats, with a 14-4 finish in the conference and a relatively comfortable conference title.

A couple of initial takeaways:

1. Coming in in the top five is both a bit surprising and encouraging. The consensus is Nova will enter the season in the 8-15 range in the polls, and they have been as low as 21 in some preseason rankings. Ken Pom has provided a pretty accurate sampling of the college basketball landscape, and to see the algorithm like the Cats so much is exciting. It will be interesting to see how this bears out when the games start.

2. Ken Pom loves the Big East. Now, I don't believe nine Big East teams will make the tournament, but it's interesting that Ken Pom is so bullish on the conference in what some expect to be a down year. Most importantly, if the other computers follow suit, it could be a big boost for the conference in terms of strength and schedule and "tier" wins.

Booth, Paschall Shine in "Secret Scrimmage"

The Cats got together with UNC for the popular preseason scrimmages that programs like to take part in, and the results were encouraging regarding Nova's 2018-19 leaders.

Per CBS Sports' Jon Rothstein, Phil Booth dropped 41 while Eric Paschall added 24, and apparently Paschall had his deep ball working.

Obviously the results of these scrimmages are to be taken with a grain of salt, but it's hard not to be excited about those numbers regardless of their context. Hopefully a sign of things to come as the regular season is just weeks away.

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl Update

In this week's "Three-point Play" Rivals' Eric Bossi updated the recruitment of five-star forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, who has now completed his five official visits.

Robinson-Earl surprised some when he included Villanova in his final five, and the Cats have since pushed to be a real player in his recruitment. The consensus has long been that Kansas is the favorite and that it is truly a race between Kansas and North Carolina.

But Bossi notes that he would be hesitant to designate Robinson-Earl a Kansas lock, and that Nova and UNC have been making things interesting. He also notes that a strong unofficial visit to Arizona helped push those other Wildcats into the final discussion. Bossi believes Notre Dame may be falling out of things and says a commitment to the Irish would be the only decision that surprises him.

Another interesting note is that Rivals national analyst Dan McDonald recently switched his prediction from North Carolina to Villanova. The analyst/publisher predictions are a relatively new addition to the Rivals site, but currently the predictions stand at 40% for UNC, 40% for Nova, and 20% for Kansas. Full disclosure, I predicted UNC. That means one of the Nova votes isn't a hope pick from me. Villanova received it's first Robinson-Earl prediction on October 4, and McDonald changed his pick on October 11. If you're a believer in trends, that's a good sign for the Cats.

Robinson-Earl would be a great addition to the Nova frontcourt, and a commitment would give Nova some flexibility with the 2020 class. It's still hard to argue that Kansas and UNC aren't leading the pack, but it may be a bit more open than popular opinion would lead you to believe. Bossi expects a commitment sooner than later.

Paschall Named to Karl Malone Award Watch List

The Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame has announced the 20 members of the watch list for the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Award and Villanova's Eric Paschall has been included.

After averaging 10.6 points, 5.3 rebounds and 2.2 assists a season ago, Paschall will look to build off his 24-point performance in the national semifinal against Kansas as he steps into a lead role with the Wildcats in 2018-19.

In February, the list will be cut from 20 to 10, with five finalists being announced in March. The winner will be announced April 12, 2019 at the College Basketball Awards presented by Wendy's, in Los Angeles.

Congrats to Eric on the well-deserved recognition.

Justin Moore Tabbed As One Of Five Top 50+ Prospects To Make An Impact

In this week's Twitter Tuesday, Rivals' Corey Evans was asked about 2019 prospects ranked outside the top 50 who could be set to make an impact, and Evans highlighted five players he could see "over-performing" their rank and making an immediate impact.

Among those five players was Villanova's Justin Moore. Moore is currently ranked No. 58 in the Rivals 150. Here's what Evans had to say about Moore:

"He should have a great opportunity at Villanova thanks to the pending graduation of Phil Booth and Joe Cremo. Moore is a stone-cold assassin via the jumper and boasts a mature skillset that should thrive under Jay Wright’s watch."

It's no secret that Wright has had great success with players ranked in the 50-100 range in their class, and Moore appears primed to be next in line to continue that tradition. With the 2019 class already ranked in the top five nationally, the idea of Moore outperforming his ranking has to make Nova fans feel good.
