The initial 2018-19 Ken Pom rankings have been released, and Villanova fans should be encouraged by the results...the Wildcats checked in at No. 5.
Coming in ahead of Nova were Kansas, Duke, North Carolina, and Virginia.
Other notable Big East members were Marquette (29), Butler (31), Creighton (33), and St. John's (39). Nine of the ten Big East schools were in the top 68, with DePaul rounding things out at 77.
Ken Pom projects a 23-6 record for the Cats, with a 14-4 finish in the conference and a relatively comfortable conference title.
A couple of initial takeaways:
1. Coming in in the top five is both a bit surprising and encouraging. The consensus is Nova will enter the season in the 8-15 range in the polls, and they have been as low as 21 in some preseason rankings. Ken Pom has provided a pretty accurate sampling of the college basketball landscape, and to see the algorithm like the Cats so much is exciting. It will be interesting to see how this bears out when the games start.
2. Ken Pom loves the Big East. Now, I don't believe nine Big East teams will make the tournament, but it's interesting that Ken Pom is so bullish on the conference in what some expect to be a down year. Most importantly, if the other computers follow suit, it could be a big boost for the conference in terms of strength and schedule and "tier" wins.
