Cats Land At No. 13 in Andy Katz's Preseason Power 36

We've reached the time of year where preseason predictions and rankings start to come out, and NCAA.com's Andy Katz has released his preseason power 36. Villanova came in at No. 13, and Katz projects the Cats will start the season in the 10-15 range in the AP poll.

Here's what Katz had to say about Villanova:

The defending national champs lost quite a bit but still have to be the team to beat in the Big East. Phil Booth and Eric Paschall have championship experience and Albany’s Joe Cremo will come in and make a major contribution. The newcomers like Cole Swider and Jahvon Quinerly will be household names soon enough.

The Cats came in behind Kentucky, Kansas, Gonzaga, Duke, North Carolina, Virginia, Tennessee, Nevada, Auburn, Kansas State, Michigan State, and Syracuse.

I could see Nova jumping 'Cuse, K-State, and possibly Auburn when the preseason polls are released.

Other Big East schools to make the power 36 were Marquette (19), Butler (33), and Providence (36).

Nova Commits, Targets Garner Attention at USA Basketball Mini-Camp

Last weekend USA Basketball held a mini-camp in Colorado Springs, and Nova commits and targets did plenty to stand out. Rivals' Corey Evans was there, and here are some of his observations that are of interest to Villanova.

On Nova commit Justin Moore:

"Guard Justin Moore should establish himself well at Villanova and be another strong producer for Jay Wright as he lifts Villanova into blueblood territory."

On Nova target Isaiah Stewart:

"Fellow Rivals analyst Eric Bossi headlined his awards column with Isaiah Stewart, but this article wouldn't be credible if we didn’t include the big fella again. There is going to be continued talk about the upsides of those ahead of him in the Rivals150, but when it comes time to show up and produce, no one does it better.

This is nothing new for the big man, arguably the most consistent producer in America. But he has raised his basketball ceiling every few months and this past weekend, it was his ability to score over either shoulder in the post and even knock down a few high-elbow jumpers that really intrigued. Stewart is the most sure-fire college star in the 2019 class, and he is good enough to impact the national title race for the college program he decides to call home."

And finally on Nova commit Bryan Antoine:

"The 2019 class is a bit different in that we have already seen a handful of prospects decline the chance to suit up for a blueblood program and instead choose their best fit at the college level. While it is not a slight to Villanova whatsoever (I mean, the Wildcats are the defending national champs, after all), but Bryan Antoine was Friday’s top standout and his talents and abilities will be put to good use on the Main Line."

It's great to hear that some future Wildcats are making an impression in one of the most challenging environments high school players participate in.

Collin Gillespie Pegged As Breakout Candidate

The majority of attention around the 2018-19 Villanova basketball team will be focused on Eric Paschall, Phil Booth, and five-star freshman Jahvon Quinerly, but CBS Sports singles out another Wildcat worth watching, sophomore Collin Gillespie.

Here's what Kyle Boone had to say about Gillespie:

"Jahvon Quinerly, Eric Paschall and Phil Booth are going to get plenty of pub, but rising sophomore Collin Gillespie should be getting mention as an impact player for the reigning NCAA champs, too. He shot 39.4 percent from the 3-point line as a freshman in limited run, and has a chance to break into the starting rotation in his second season."

Gillespie performed admirably in his freshman season and certainly stands to get plenty of playing time, so the opportunity will be there for him to make an impact. Gillespie's progression during his time at Villanova will be big for the program, so we'll certainly paying attention to what year two looks like.

2018-2019 Track

The 2018-2019 rosters were just posted. Gone are Sterling Pierce, Brian Faust and Tory Young, for the men, and Alex Harris, for the women. Why? They all had eligibility remaining. That is a lot of very fine talent to forego. Is there something amiss with the Villanova track program - especially the men? Faust is probably one of the better 400 runners Villanova has signed in recent years, had an outstanding freshman year, and had the potential to be an outstanding 800 man. Puzzling ...

Bryan Antoine Stands Out At USA mini-camp

Villanova commit Bryan Antoine garnered attention at the first night of USA Basketball mini-camp in Colorado. In fact, Rivals' Corey Evans named Antoine his top standout. Here's what Evans had to say:

"Making an early commitment to Villanova, there might not be a better guard prospect for how Jay Wright goes about things than Bryan Antoine. The 6-foot-4 senior can do it all in the backcourt and while he has been rather reliant on having the ball in his hands in the past, it was impressive to see him contribute playing off of it on Friday. His instincts were on total display where he came up with a number of plays from out of his area, especially on the offensive glass, displaying a tremendous nose for the basketball and the know-how of where and when to be. Antoine’s talent level has never been a question mark but what has been is his ability to consistently produce; might he be turning the corner? On Friday, Antoine was stupendous as he proved just why he is a five-star prospect and one of the best in America."

2020 F Myles Stute To Take Unofficial Visit To Nova Today

Don't have a ton of time to break this down as I'm about to run out the door and back to campus for Hoops Mania tonight, but wanted to get the info out at least.

This is per Rivals' Corey Evans. Stute is a 6-6 forward out of Gonzaga High School in Washington, DC. He is currently ranked 109 in the Rivals 150 for the class of 2020.

I'll try to get some video of Stute this weekend after the Hoops Mania coverage is finished up.

Joe Cremo Highlighted as One Of Three Transfers Who Could Impact the Title Race

Rivals' Corey Evans singled out three transfers who could impact the race for a national championship, and Villanova's Joe Cremo was on the list. Here's what Evans had to say about Cremo:

The 6-foot-4 Albany transfer was one of the top players in the American East in recent years and is the ideal complement for Villanova’s contingent of perimeter firepower. He is the perfect fit for Jay Wright’s system. If the Wildcats find a way to win their third national title in four years, the lightly recruited star out of New York could be the catalyst for the team's success.

I have to agree with Evans that Cremo fits nicely into the Wildcats' system. While the freshman class will garner much of the attention, Cremo could be the key to Villanova's success this season.

Finneran Pavilion First Look

Villanova opened up the Finneran Pavilion for a media tour this afternoon, providing a first look at the renovated building. I'm working on getting pictures loaded up, but I wanted to get the highlights out quickly. For now, I'll note a few of the highlights, and then will try to put together a more complete article tonight or tomorrow with some visuals. For now...

The building looks much much better. You enter into an open atrium with all sorts of Villanova history on full display. You can look down to the lower level where there is a club area with TVs, concessions, and tables, and where they incorporated the floor from the 2016 national championship game. The approach to the main entrance "McMahon Way", has some seating and AD Mark Jackson said they hope to create a "park atmosphere" in that area where fans can hang out and mingle.

Perhaps the biggest change is that students will now be behind both baskets instead of just one. They also added some risers in the corners, so the student sections will take on more of a "U" shape as opposed to the straight vertical composition in the old building.

While I would have preferred to see an increase in capacity, Jackson noted that changing the footprint of the building would have required permitting and the timeline didn't allow for it. But overall the building looks very nice, and I think it will provide a much better experience for both fans and players. It's definitely an upgrade that should help with recruiting.

We weren't able to see the locker rooms, but Phil Booth mentioned that they are a big improvement and talked about a new players lounge with TVs, video games, couches, and refrigerators.

Like I said, I'm hoping to have an article with some visuals tonight or tomorrow, but I wanted to get the highlights up ASAP.

Jeremiah Robinson-Earl Discusses Nova Visit

Five-star forward Jeremiah Robinson-Earl has been set on a final five for some time now, a list that included Villanova. Robinson-Earl has now completed four of his five official visits, and he talked to Rivals' Corey Evans about the visits he's taken so far, what he's looking forward to at his last visit, and about a potential timeline on a decision.

Here's what he had to say about Villanova:

It was good. I didn’t know a whole lot about them but I did know that they were a good program because they have been winning so much and getting guys to the draft. Going out there, it is a different feel with the vibe that the coaches have being all young and ready to go. Coach (Jay) Wright, he is a Hall of Famer who has been winning a lot and has a great playing style that I think fits me well with it being a versatile four-out, one-in and finding the mismatch. I really enjoyed the visit.

Evans also asked if Robinson-Earl and Villanova discussed his role with Eric Dixon coming in and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree already on board:

It would be a great team. I think that we could play a lot of small ball and be a lot quicker than a lot of teams and be a great advantage with all of the great guards there like Jahvon Quinerly, Bryan Antoine, and Justin Moore. I think that it would be a good fit.

Robinson-Earl has also completed visits to Notre Dame, North Carolina, and Kansas and will finish up at Arizona. He said he hopes to have a decision by late November, but as soon as he knows he will announce it.

Right now this feels like a Kansas-North Carolina race, but we'll see what happens.

Cross Country 2018

At the Nuttycombe Invitational, the men finished 20th and the women 4th. Both can expect to do better - especially the women. Men have yet to use Nathan Rodriguez, who would probably be at least the number 3 guy on the squad. The women have yet to use Taryn O'Neill and Kaley Ciluffo. O'Neill is supposedly outstanding and was expected to contend for number 1. The puzzle is Burda. She was one the best on the squad, last year. Will her times improve as the season progresses?

A little note: Katrina Robinson (Arkansas) finished 8th. Believe she is from New Zealand. VU is not getting the best from down under. Why? Maybe it was grades? But then they did not get McDonald or Hoare (Wisconsin) - and that is not grades.

Isaiah Wong To Miami

Nova target Isaiah Wong has committed to Miami. This isn't a huge surprise, as it's felt that Wong had been trending towards Miami for some time.

Furthermore, the Cats seem to be prioritizing a frontcourt player with their last available scholarship in 2019, should they choose to use it. Isaiah Stewart is the prize at the forward position, and Nova would gladly accept a commitment from him. In addition, Nova has jumped in late for highly-rated forward Matthew Hurt, further indicating a desire to land a frontcourt player.

There is little doubt that Wong would have fit nicely at Villanova, but his commitment to Miami is neither surprising nor particularly troubling. While the Cats remain in play for several elite 2019 prospects, it feels like Stewart is the one to watch at this point.
