Big East Next Year

The swing in the quality of the Big East will be huge - based on NBA Draft decisions. The league could be outstanding if:

Ellenson returns to Marquette - a tourney team with him
Reynolds returns to Xavier - a tourney team and high seed with him
Whitehead returns to Seton Hall - a tourney team with him
Bentil returns to Providence - a bubble team at least with him
Hart returns to Villanova - a NC contender with him

Kris Dunn is a Junior, but is clearly leaving.

If these guys come back:

NCAA teams - Nova, Xavier, Seton Hall
Potential NCAA teams - Marquette, Providence, Creighton (adding some real strength to a good core), Butler, Georgetown
Not so much - St. Johns, DePaul

First team all league - 5 guys above

Other returning playaz... Bluett, Sumner, Brunson, Big Smooth, Paschall, Spellman, Delgado, Cheatum, Watson, Martin, Copeland, Govan.

Very strong league next year.

If those guys leave - um, not so much!

Lessons learned from Oklahoma beat down big reason for our success

Looking back on our season, it's hard to point to a game in December and say that was our turning point, but I believe that is the case with the Oklahoma game. There are two reasons why I think that:

  1. We gunned and missed so many 3s that game. If you don't recall, we were 4-32!!!!!! I think Jay realized after that game, we must diversify the offense by shooting less 3s and more 2 point shots. Our offense started to change after that and we became much more efficient by shooting and making many more 2 point shots. This led to much better balance on offense and our 3 point shooting begin to climb.
  2. The OU guards killed us from 3 and off the bounce. We couldn't keep them in front of us. What does Jay do going forward? Start playing a lot more 2-3 zone vs. teams with quick athletic guards. And when we play man vs. these types of teams, he'll have Bridges guard the quickest guard (although, that may not be a direct result of the OU game). Jay still loves his man to man defense, but he's realizing being stubborn can cost you. This is another sign of why he's a great coach - willing to change even though it goes against all he believed.
There are many reasons why I like our chances vs. Miami, but these adjustments are some of the biggest. Rarely can you learn a lot from a 23 point blowout, but I think that game is a big reason why we had a terrific regular season and are still playing today.

That's why Jay put starters in

Anything can happen, I think Iowa got it to 16 with 1:30 left and our offense was horrible. With the way we played I cannot imagine if we would have lost. Texas AM was down 12 with 40 seconds left and wins the game. I said to myself when Jay took Arch, Hart, and Jenkins out with 2:30 to go was too early. UNI dominated that game. Feel horrible for them.

Walk Ons

The three walk on's for Villanova will be graduating and it started me thinking about next year. The walk ons are really important to our program and play the role of our opponents in practice. The group this year was particularly good at getting scholarship players up to snuff in practice. Next year Jay will be replacing 3 of them. How does he find these kids? Does he ask for volunteers or seach the campus for them?

These kids have to learn our system just like the regular guys. Since we have a couple of new regulars plus new walk on's, how does that affect getting the kids sharp for the season. Just some of my random thoughts and was wondering what others think on this.

Another recap and behind the scenes video

Here's a nice recap by the BCT with a video that shows a little more behind the scenes. Nothing earthshattering just some footage of the team coming off the court to the locker room and Jay giving Patty and his kids(I'm assuming) a big hug.

This paragraph from the article managed to throw in a reference from A Christmas Story:

"That determination ended up playing out like Ralphie from “A Christmas Story,” taking care of the bully who pelted him with snowballs. Villanova absolutely pummeled a slow-footed Hawkeyes team, cutting off shooting lanes while moving the ball at the other end with such precise execution that Iowa was always a step behind. The Wildcats went into halftime with a whopping 54-29 lead that made the second half an unnecessary exercise mandated by NCAA rules."

On this site the articles/video go behind a pay wall after 24 hours after being posted unfortunately, so it'll be gone at 4:30PM today.
