Nova Opens Big 5 With 82-57 Rout Of Penn, Move to 7-0

Penn provided little resistance for the Wildcats, who maintained a double-digit lead for the majority of the game. Nova earned their 14th straight win against Penn as they look to take another Big 5 title.

There was an early surprise when Hart didn't start as punishment for being late to a workout. DiVincenzo started in his place.

All five starters plus Hart reached double figures: Jenkins poured in 22, hitting 6-7 from deep to go along with 5 rebounds, and reached 1,000 points in his Villanova career. Reynolds had 12 with 8 boards. Brunson had 11, while DiVincenzo had 13 as well as another impressive block. Bridges continued his stellar all-around play, putting up 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and 3 steals. Hart had 12 points and 9 rebounds off the bench.

Paschall had a rough night offensively, shooting 0-4 from the field and just 2-6 from the free throw line. He didn't let that detract from this performance in other areas however. He chipped in 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and a steal. He brought his usual energy and effort, most notably when he raced up the court and dove to knock the ball away from behind a Penn player.

The Wildcats shot 55% from the floor and 46% from three, while holding the Quakers to just 32% from the field. Nova's 17 turnovers are a bit concerning, and there were a few lapses on the defensive end, but all-in-all a pretty solid performance.

Up next St. Joe's on Saturday afternoon.

Cats Get To 6-0

Not the prettiest of efforts from Nova, but enough to get the 63-47 W with the outcome never really being in doubt. Nova shoots 44% from the field and just 29% from three. Rebounds 35-30 in favor of Nova.

Hart with a double-double 13 points, 11 boards. Jenkins with 11, Paschall and Bridges with 8, Brunson and DiVincenzo with 7, Reynolds with 6. A bit of extended minutes for Painter who had 3 points.

Up next the start of the Big 5 schedule with Penn on Tuesday. Enjoy the holiday everyone.

Nova Defeats UCF

Another solid performance by Villanova and an in-season tournament championship for the fourth straight season. UCF battled hard, put the Cats were just too much.

DiVincenzo with a career high 13 points to go with 4 rebounds. Donte did a nice job in an increased ball-handling role in the absence of Booth, and he looks to be getting more and more comfortable. Hart had 15 points and 5 rebounds. Jenkins and Brunson both with 12. And Bridges was all over the place filling up the stat sheet: 10 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals and a block. He continued to show a willingness and ability to play off the dribble and drive to the basket.

As usual, ball movement was great for the Wildcats. They showed really impressive team rebounding, as they battled with UCF's 7-6 center Tacko Fall, and Nova was able to win the rebounding battle 36-31. Even when a Wildcat couldn't haul in the rebound cleanly, they managed to keep the ball alive as teammates swarmed. It wasn't Nova's best offensive performance, but they were in control for basically the entire game and got the job done. Up next College of Charleston on Wednesday night.

Nova Trounces Wake

After a bit of a sleepy, uninspired performance yesterday, today the Cats came out energized and focused and looked like the team we all expect them to be in a 96-77 win over Wake Forest.

Hart led the way with a career-high 30 points on 11-14 shooting and 6-8 from three to go along with 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals. Bridges had 19, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks and showed an ability to play off the dribble and get to the rim. 16 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists from Jenkins on 5-8 and 3-6 from three. Brunson added 11 points and 6 assists including a thunderous dunk and continued his overall steady play. DiVincenzo was the 5th Wildcat in double-figures with 12 on 4-6 and 3-5 from three and 4 rebounds.

Nova shot 56.7% from the field and 51.6% from three. They won the rebounding battle 34-24.

All-in-all an excellent performance. The offense was running efficiently and was generating a ton of open looks. There were a few lapses defensively, but overall was solid and the energy was much better. I think it's safe to say yesterday was the result of some combination of the start time, the neutral court, and maybe the opponent. Cats get the winner of UCF-College of Charleston on Sunday night, where they will look to take the championship in an in-season tournament for the fourth straight year.

Final note: Booth didn't play due to "knee tendonitis."

Cats Hang On Against Western Michigan

It wasn't Nova's best performance, but the Cats gut it out and get the W. Paschall led Nova with 17 points on 5-8 from the field, 3-6 from three. He really demonstrated an ability to score inside and out, and hit a couple buckets when the team really needed them. Hart with 14, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Brunson with 14, Jenkins with 11. The Wildcats grabbed 12 steals.

Positive takeaways: Paschall. He scored in the post, he scored slashing to the basket, and he scored from deep. Brought high energy again. Very nice performance. I'm liking this kid more and more as I watch him play. Hart as usual, doing a bit of everything. Jalen had 3 assists and 3 steals to go with his 14 points, and continues to look very steady.

Concern: Phil Booth. Phil shot 1 of 6, and is shooting just 30% for the season. So far this hasn't hurt Villanova, but at some point it could bite them, and Booth has shown he can be better than this.

Again, not their best performance. But it was a weird start time, on a neutral court, and they gutted it out and got the job done. Good teams find ways to win even when they aren't at their best.
