think this thread needs to be re-titled - "Chase Utley as a Phillie remembered"

Does this mark the end of an era? Or will it finally be remembered when ryan howard and/or ruiz rides the dusty trail?

Utley was a Philly Gr8r stayed w/ them for a loong time & brought home a Championship.

Cap tip'

Love racist CoP's reaction to Utley leaving. Already at work all I hear about is how the Phillies better retire his number. Rollins is their all time hits leader, had a better glove, won a MVP, was rarely hurt, etc yet when he was traded, the sentiment was "he needed to go plus he didn't hustle"

Utley is the greatest Phillies position player not named Mike Schmidt.

I'm pretty sure the Phils only retire the numbers of HOF players....so Ut and Rollins will be on the outside looking in....but they'll both be on the wall of fame with Lieby and Juan Samuel.

Oh and Rollins > Utley....

Was better than both Rollins and Howard in their MVP seasons.

no he was not. see numbers below for Ryan's MVP Season

Ryan: .313 BA, 58 Home Runs, 149 RBIs, 1.084 OPS, .425 OBP, .659 SLG, 5.2 WAR
Chase: .309 BA, 32 Home Runs, 102 RBIs, .906 OPS, .379 OBP, .528 SLG, 7.3 WAR

so other than that nerd stat of WAR NOT ONE key offensive category was Chase better than Ryan in 2006.

try again.

Kind of a stupid policy that guarantees no other numbers will ever be retired. Sounds like their dumb wall of fame needs tweaking too. While not HoF'ers, they shouldn't be lumped in with stiffs like Samuel and Liebey

Bingo!!! Idiots....

If you want to say that Utley had a greater 4-5 year stretch than Rollins, then that's fine. But he didn't have a better career from start to finish and Rollins played a tougher position.

Rollins = compiler?

Compiler is weak. If it was that easy then why doesn't everyone do it?

Utley was hurt too much and brought up late (Not his fault). Rollins accomplished more.

While a good argument can be made for Utley (definitely if you want to look at a 4 or 5 year window) I'm with burrs on Rollins over Utley here, and he's cited most of the correct reasons why, especially durability--Utley breaking down and missing large parts of seasons hastened the Phillies demise. I'll add that Utley's defense, even at a much easier position, was never Gold Glove caliber. Rollins on the other hand played outstanding defense every year, many Gold Gloves and should have more. The Phillies also narrowly escaped a case of the yips that struck Utley in the field during one of the long playoff runs.

So in summary, Utley in his prime 5 years was better than Rollins in his prime 5 years.

I don't give Rollins extra credit for his half season missed with a calf injury and then 4 years of half-assing it on the basepaths to avoid re-injury.

Apparently there's no such thing as fielding and base running.

1. Ryan Howard hit a lot of home runs in 2006 and hit for average. He was horrific in the field and below average on the base paths. By contrast, Utley was the best or second best defensive second baseman in baseball that season and was fantastic on the bases.

2. Position. Utley was unquestionably the best second offensive second baseman in the National League and played elite defense at a premium defensive position. Howard was unquestionably the second best first baseman in the league (behind Pujols) and played putrid defense at the easiest defensive position.
