I did not find Fitzsimons' name amongst the runners in the preliminaries at the Big East. He was supposed to be in the 3rd heat of the 800. He must be hurt? How seriously? Might explain his poor performance at the Penn Relays?

sebastianic,

Most middle and long distance runners have different
looks about their running styles, but Fitz looks labored
as he runs. Is it an injury or a just another kid who developed
early.

Whitecat, Fitzsimons has a somewhat different running motion - even "labored" as you describe. But it might be effective for him. He is very pigeon-toed and that might explain his style.

There is a video out there of his anchor in the 4x800 at the New Balance outdoor championships in 2010. You will have to search for it. Same sort of rocking back and forth running style, but still very smooth - i.e., he is moving forward quickly and seemingly effortlessly. His time: 1:47.15. One might argue that he is an early bloomer, but one should not run worse than what one has already run - three years later. Personally, I have always thought he had a lot of potential. His ultimate future, though, might be as a miler, but he should still be an outstanding 800 man in college. Believe, at that same New Balance meet, he also ran an outstanding mile on the DMR.

Remember he was hurt twice as a freshman. Forget what the injuries were. Somehow I think it had to do with his back, but I am not sure..

Another reminder: he also ran XC in high school. Don't know what his training regimen is. And Marcus' aproach has less to do with mileage and more to do with heart beats.

Seb Coe mentions that Chris FitzSimons might wind up as a miler. I believe he's on the start list at the UVA meet this weekend in the 1500 meters. IIRC, he split something like 4:07 as DMR anchor at the end of his senior year in high school at New Balance outdoor nationals.

My mistake -- FitzSimons is running the 800 (not the 1500) this weekend at Virginia

Virginia Invitational
Neutts + Schappert in the 1500
Golato + Solis + FitzSimons in the 800
Morrin in the Steeple
Denault + McEntee + O'Sullivan + Tully + Williamsz in the 1500

Fitzsimons had nothing at Virginia Challenge: 1:53.34 and last. in elite 800.

Solis: 1:50.- first in regular 800.

Denault: 3:42.08.

With the talk of Chad Noelle, I was thinking about what VU really needs. I have always maintained that VU needs at least one outstanding 400 man. Believe that hurt the team in the DMR at Penn. But even more concerning is Fitzsimons. He splits 1:47+ as a high school senior and now we are talking 1:49+ (Penn DMR), three years later. What has happened? He is retrogressing - i.e., going backwards. If Fitzsimons were running as expected - 1:47 or better - then VU would be on the verge of an outstanding 4x800 and only worrying about the opening leg. So the question is what is wrong with Fitzsimons?

Malone is available, next season. And Kieran Brennan and Josh Lampron are ready. But you still need the Fitzsimons you expected. Fitzsimons may have another year of eligibility. So he is important. But will he ever be the runner O'Ssullivan thought he had recruited?

For obvious reasons, the lack of improvement
seems to be more prevalent with females. And we know
about two or three in our program right now. I did some
leg work in hoops on some high school recruits for the Heels
and the Gators. It was a hard question to tell an assistant
to Coach Smith that with normal development a player could or
not play for the Heels. If I gave an unqualified yes, they would
send one of the assistants. I have questions about the red shirt
from Pearl River, and the kid from LI who is a quarter miler
didn't improve at all as the season progressed.

I realize that things are slow right now, but have
any of our highly touted recruits disappointed
early in their careers and suddenly blossomed
late?

Parker from NH ran a very fast 800 recently. Is she on our radar?

Good one w/ Curtis, but he had some issues that really hampered him first few years. He ran a very interesting 10K at the nationals in Des Moines. Sat in the pack for first 2/3 of race and then with about 2K to go he just took off. It only lasted for about 600M, he was quickly passed by and ended up getting lapped. He just totally folded in last 1600. Very strange.

'90,

Marcus deserves a great deal of credit
for the help he gave Bobby. It might have
been his senior year at Penn in the DMR, He got
the baton a stride or two in from of the kid from
Texas who kicked our ass. Bobby looked back, and he
wasn't a factor.

Is the VU board ever going to list our teams and schedules?

TFE, I have been puzzled by Fitzsimmons' progress. I knew he had been hurt during his freshman year - maybe twice. Has he been hurt again, this year? Maybe that explains what has happened since (and during) the Penn Relays ...?
