Going On Now?

It seems like a non-concussion related decision. Like some blue blood loose cannon quitting daddy's investment firm to go work on a natto farm. Maybe THE SHIELD gave him a farewell bonus to fill up the news cycle for a few days on his way out.

I think it comes down to enjoying something versus being good at it. Ricky Williams, Andrew Bynum, they gave up on the sport because they just didn't like doing it. Being a professional athlete isn't like working as a receptionist, it's kind of tough to punch the clock and have the media stop caring what you are up to. There's no reason to put yourself through that if you don't enjoy playing the game.

There was a Boston globe article last week that stated that 17% of all the 7' tall people in America are playing or have played in the NBA. That is an absurd stat. Basically if you are 7' tall, you are probably just about forced to play basketball from an early age. Well what if you don't like basketball? Seems like the recipe for some unhappiness.

Watched a bit of the Walker Cup a few years ago. That's all I know of the course. I'm not an ADP, though.

There are going to be very few middle class people from two parent homes in the NFL 20 or 30 years from now.

Buddy of mine played NGL either last year or two years ago. Never had the chance.

The Borland news is a big deal. 3 guys who could still play under the age of 27 retire from the NFL this off season. More and more parents will pull their children from playing this sport. It's not going away tomorrow but 30 years from now football isn't going to be the most popular sport in the country.

spg, one of my buddies played center for 15 seasons in the NFL. Recently he had to get his knee replaced. I'll never forget a story he told us after the procedure. He was with the doctor and they were discussing the process and the doctor said something in regards of how long they expected the knee to last. My buddy told me how he looked at the doctor and just said something to like, let's be honest, I'm not living until I'm 75 so it really doesn't matter. He attributes this to playing football and as he describes running into a brick way hundreds of time per day for 20 years. What is interesting to me is his son is 10. Huge kid like his daddy. I always ask him why he allows his kid to play football. The kid is a very talented hoops/baseball player. We usually have these discussions when we're sitting on the beach. He's sitting in his chair because he's usually sitting there due to the 17 surgeries he's had on that knee. Doesn't make any sense to me but what do I know.

I am fine with this guys decision, my question is should he be trashed by people if he goes into football in some capacity?

No. He made an educated personal decision. He made it clear this was his decision and his decision alone. He's not trashing football but stated clearly it was not worth the risk to him. Others are free to make their own decision.

i do hope football decreases in popularity as it encourages even much of the same xenophobic, artificial tough guy culture which makes so many of our young men into the a-holes who get blackout drunk on st. patty's day and attend events like santa con.

Why wouldn't the kid play? Maybe he enjoys it.

Your responsibility as a parent does not mean giving into every. Whim your child might enjoy. Especially in light of experience that tells you it's bad for your children.
