High school girl just ran a 4:04 1500.

Is that even humanly possible? This girl is going to be a legend if she isn't already.

Well to put it in some perspective one of the more talked about runners on this board ran 4:26 recently and she's the 800i winner at NatSchol. So she'd finish roughly a 140m behind Cain.

So Cain is a phenom no question. She can run very fast long bursts to pick up (or follow) a pace and in that sense she reminds me of Ovett. She doesn't look like an overly impressive physical talent but the girl can run like almost nobody else has ever done in the US.

If I was her parent I'd prob tell her to run CC and Out. her Fr. year. Indoor her So. year. And call it a college career March '16. I don't think she'll do that but who knows ?

I was at that race that Sheila won. Great fun to watch. Cain really impressed me, but good to see Sheila get the win.

Begs the question how much faster can she get? She's getting coaches by Salazar at the moment even from a distance; will his methods burn her out? He's been hit or miss with his athletes so far. Galen (finally) a hit, others not so much.

Salazar was quoted as saying she will run in Europe this summer. I can't see her doing that as an amateur. Gotta believe she will soon announce that she is bypassing college elig.

Her parents are loaded apparently. They've been paying for her career out of pocket.

You can accept expense money as long as it's drawn on from a UST&F trust accout. So if the Herculis Monaco meet was lucky enough to talk Cain into competing they could send travel and hotel $$$ and she's still an amateur.

What you can't do is have Mary's face on a Wheaties box or name on a shoe brand.

So europe race promoters can pay $ into USA t&f account for all her expenses to run races all over Europe this summer and she still maintains her eligibility for ncaa. Next question is if euro promoters would pay her expenses? Would she sell that many tix over there for them?

She wouldn't be that well known in say Helsinki to sell tickets. But she would be a big attraction for TV particularly back here in US which is important. Let's also remember that Cain is a USATF --Sr-- champion (Indoor Mile '13). I don't think she'll win in Des Moines in June but I wouldn't rule her out at 1500 so she could win another national title.

Seemingly a very small thing, but isn't she just 16 ...? Seems to be doing an awful lot of intense, high-level competition. Yes, she is an outstanding talent, but what is the hurry? Didn't Salazar burn out Arianna Lambie?

I think she's 17 now. The gene's out of the bottle,no going back. However I'm one of the few who think she could still compete in college (though it's prob'not likely).

Or1on, as you can see, I am not one for rushing into adulthood. There is plenty of time for that. However, what one should be concerned about is abuse. Cain is obviously a rare talent. And she did turn 17 on May 3rd. But it seems they - whoever "they" are - are pushing her too fast. Again, what is the hurry?

Didn't Salazar burn himself out? I am asking because I think he did, but I am not sure.

I too think she would benefit by running in a high level program with a coach that understands that more is not always better. She wants to be ready for 2016. Make sure you are healthy and your body sound. Take your time. And she doesn't "need" the money; so why turn "pro" now or anytime soon?

I don't think she's being burned out. She's not racing very much for the average high school kid and her results show that she's not being overtrained.

If anything, Salazar is being cautious with her, like he was with Rupp.

In the Wanamaker mile Sheila stayed in last place before starting her move. Then she erupted once she took the lead. She took Cain with her on her victory lap and heaped praise on the teenager when she was being interviewed after her win.

You can probably still get the video of the Wanamaker mile on the Internet.

Well Mary finished #2(1500)USTF and made the Moscow/WT&F championships. Because she was so high profile at the meet some writers were speculating about her turning pro and at least one said she likely would not.

While I think her would-be choices may include H,Y,P,C, Stan,Oreg yes I'd still offer (why not). Put something together and have some fun with it and VU may get a visit.

Pro or Am?

I absolutely think she should go pro. She could break the bank now and still get her college paid for a la Allyson Felix.
