Pope Stream

No way, I left my office at 1:30 and won't be back in DC until Friday morning. Going to be a mess.

who are the people that are so into going to "see him live?" for the life of me, I'll never understand it.

MSG/Penn Station on Friday evening is going to be insane. A 6pm mass at the Garden?

Holy shit, the way the CoP'ers and Nova have made it sound was that the Pope was going to be in Philly the whole time. His time is basically split evenly between CoDB, CoP, and CoADP.

The CoP visit is the focal point of the visit with the public Mass on the Parkway.

CoP is also the official host of the World Meeting of Families which is the whole purpose of his visit to the US.

I believe that all other events are closed to the public and/or require tickets.

I have to say i was kind of confused by this as well when I saw his actual itinerary a few weeks back. I was down in Philly and the south jersey shore in august and by the talk/coverage thought he was only going to philly

Focal point but he is not going to be there for any longer than other cities.

The way the CoP was advertising it was that the pope was only going to be in CoProper.

I never got the impression that he was going to be in CoP longer than anywhere else, but the security planning was far more complex due to the nature and scale of the events that will take place which is why it received more media attention than it might have otherwise.

Perhaps BustaNutter can speak to this.

I want to some sort of incident like a flash mob or brawl at mass between fishtowners wearing Utley jerseys

Going On Now: Pope addressing Congress. Adp, thoughts?

Unwatchable. Between the slow speech and broken English, I have no idea how someone who's forced to be their live isn't asleep. Props to Biden and Boehner for having to look half interested the whole time.

I've driven in both days and found the traffic to be lighter than normal in the morning and evening. Plus yesterday was Yom Kippur. Lots of people got their panties in a bunch and were scared off by dire protections of traffic (or just wanted to "work from home" if that's your thing -- with a couple small kids at home, easier for me to leave). My guess is the same will happen in Philly to some degree with Nutter shutting down pretty much all of downtown.

Also walked down to the White House/Wash Monument area yesterday and saw the Popemobile go by. Worthwhile total expense of 2 hours or so IMO (only even that long because you had to get to the security line an hour early to get in). Was about four rows back, pretty much closer than you could get to the Phils' parade downtown in 2008.

As far as people who don't understand wanting to see him live, I'm guessing that person also frequently makes the argument "why would I go to a game when I can watch on TV with a better view, less hassle, etc." To each his own.

I'd say the average age of the crowd where I was was around 28 believe it or not, median in the 20s somewhere -- seemed to be a lot of college student types. Was surprising. May be that old people at least in DC couldn't handle the walking that was involved. Would expect more old people in Philly relatively speaking.

I saw him on TV between playing 36. Sounds like it worked out for both of us.
