Pubs would be wise to lick their wounds and confirm this moderate rather than wait and see what liberal Hillart would nominate to a Democratic controlled Senate next year. Merrick Garland

Isn't this a bit curious? A 63 year old white Jewish Harvard alumnus? I thought the point was to try and diversify?

Who?

Sidenote: The "Hillart" reference is cracking me up every time.

I know nothing about this guy but I was really moved by his speech, he teared up about 4 times. Sounds like he is a genuine and good person.

So - does he get confirmed?

The guy who under normal circumstances would have been nominated was the Indian dude. No way he'd have a chance in hell in getting confirmed. Next prez is def going to appoint another 1 or 2 judges. If this guy gets in then Hilary gets the Indian on her first appointment. If this gets pushed until next year and this guy is denied, then it happens at that time. Either way the court is about to become vastly more moderate/center left

It's a political move to weaken the GOP. They won't even have a cup of coffee with the guy, which makes them look petty/weak, and will hurt them in the upcoming election, particularly in the Senate and House races (which few are even considering right now).

Those races are going to be a mess if Trump continues on his path. GOP candidates will either have to jump on board with Trump, actively oppose Trump, or try to stay neutral (nearly impossible). All three are losing scenarios for the GOP.

So Obama gives a real down the middle soft ball, and the Republican establishment is going to block him. I hope they continue to block the nominations and then Hillart goes for a real left wing whacko and the whole pissing on the constitution that the Republicans are advocating comes back to bite them in the ass.

I've been saying this since Scalia passed - if the GOP blocks the Obama candidate, then the Dems win the White House, it would be absolutely hilarious if Hillary nominated Obama as a SCJ. If the Senate turns to the Dems, this is actually possible.

Doubtful since they hate each other. Bill is not out of the question though.

Democrats will control the Senate next year? How do you figure that?

I stated it right above...A Trump nomination throws the entire party for a loop. Dems need 4, and 24 GOP seats are up for grabs. It's possible in that scenario.

Hillary has basically run an Obama campaign this year if you've paid attention. It's not likely, but it's probably the biggest FU option available.

Bill is too old, and wouldn't get through the vetting process.

I think that the Republicans will eventually unite behind Trump once his nomination is in the bag.

They really have no other choice. The alternative is to hand the election to Hillary and no Republican wants that to happen.

Republican candidates should say the same thing. Some variation of "I don't agree with Trump on certain issues, but the people have spoken, and the only other alternative is Hillary."

The more left the supreme court leans, the better. Left leaning supreme court means gr8er appreciate for rights of the citizens and less power for big government and those in the position of advantage such as major corporations. How anybody could want a right leaning supreme court (except for the religious freaks who want to force their religious views on everybody through big government) always amazes me.

I don't get too worried about the general policies of politics, the financial policies, foreign policies, social handout policies, etc... But I do appreciate judges who protect the rights of the little guy, which is what makes me a Democrat.

Anybody who wants right leaning judges either works in the corporate sector or is a lawyer representing major corporations or banks or is a religious freak who wants the government to push their views on everyone else or is like Joe the plumber and doesn't realize that in the big picture the right leaning judges are not there to protect their interests.

Right danmcguire????

Seriously. While not too many months a year, the justices do some work. Obama didn't before ("community organizer" and law professor) and he won't need to again, he'll be chilling in Hawaii, drinking beers and sniffing jocks most of the time I'd expect.

I'll never forget when DMil called ball "the poster's poster" in his retirement speech. I don't think even Obama could outdo ball in his prime
