I've been fighting a cough the past couple days, nothing too serious - no fever or any other symptoms. But my right side, around my pectoral area is sore and there is a slight pain (about 3 on 1-10 scale) when I cough. It doesn't hurt when I breathe in or out at all. Is this anything serious or just a strained muscle?

Thanks for any help.

What hand you throw ropes with?

Thanks.

Not that I can remember really. Just normal coughing for the most part.

What do you know about Provenge, Rayhad? Is it a therapy worth trying? I'm being tested next week to see if I'm in good enough shape to do the one month protocol. If you don't want to give me a straight answer, that's OK. But, it's certainly not something I want a bunch of bad attempts at humor as a reply. This is a serious question.

I like this "ask a benchwarmer" segment. It's like the professional version of Taking Questions.

Is your md looking to use it early or do you have HR/CR PC now? Will your insurance cover it? The label is still pretty restrictive and I haven't been following DNDN as closely but I know they seemed slow out the gates with trials in earlier populations and don't think there has been much movement though I have heard some uros are pushing off label in those settings. Rayhad probably knows the details better than I.

The Dendreon/provenge saga is fascinating one to read up on on .... Lots of conspiracy theories, cabal of short sellers, michael milken and more.

TJC, without knowing more detailed history of your diagnosis and treatment, I really can't recommend anything in good conscience. Is it something your oncologist recommended?

I brought it up when my cancer went from stage 3 to stage 4. I read a lot about it and, while there are some serious risks involved, it seems like a better choice than massive doses of intravenous chemo drugs that just make you sick. My doctor said he's open to trying it if that's what I want. There is apparently not a lot of definitive evidence at this point whether it works or not. I spoke to a person at the infusion center who told me of 8 men that have undergone the therapy 7 seemed to be tolerating it very well but it was too early to know if it was working. Apparently, there's no real marker (like a PSA test) to determine how well it's working.

I'm not sure I'd say that they "just make you sick", if they only did that, we'd never give them.

If your oncologist is fine with it, and you are willing, then go for it.

Again, I don't know what treatments you have had or how your markers have responded or seen your scans or even know how long you've had it. I can't make any specific recommendations

Did anyone see HBO's "Vice Special Report: Killing Cancer" over the weekend? One pathway researchers are studying is to genetically modify HIV to stimulate your own T-cells to attack cancer cells.

That's similar to Provenge, HTC. They harvest your white blood cells, add Provenge and then 2 days later they infuse you with the treated white cells. There are 3 harvesting sessions and three infusion sessions over a three week period.

Didn't see the vice story but a company called Oncovex (which was acquired by Amgen) makes something similar using a modified version of the herpes virus. Its directly injected into cancer cells where it continues to replicate and ultimately causes the cell to burst called lysis.. then also creates an immune response. Assume its similar to the one from the Vice story.

The other promising area are the CARTs... where T-Cells are removed from a patient, then modified with an antibody so they can more directly recognize and target a specific tumor antigen. Lots of companies pursuing this.. Kite, Juno, Novartis
