I realize that recruiting for 2014 has not been finalized, but there is a lot of talent in VU's recruiting territory and I have been intrigued by Myles Marshall (TX), who recently finished 2nd in the USA Juniors 800 in 1:48.43. A rising senior. Doesn't turn 17 until December. Best part is he is the son of two Villanova greats - Debbie Grant & John Marshall. Great bloodlines. Does Marcus pursue him?

One would think a kid might have some latent dream of running where his parents were stars, but that has rarely been the case for VU. (Someone correct me if I am wrong ...) Furthermore he is in Texas. Never heard of any Texas runner coming to VU. Do recall an exchange with a Villanova alumnus during the 2014 recruiting. Does that pose an obstacle?

Even bigger concern: Does the fact that Marshall was released prove to be an insurmountable obstacle?

Kid obviously has talent and comes from a good family - remember they are both VU grads. Would be really cool if he were to achieve success at his parents' alma mater - very cool..

Megan Flowers was from Texas; she was at Nova for a year and transferred to Arkansas.

I don't think Marshall will be heading to Nova.

Clickable World junior links. Siofra CB doesn't make the final though she has the 1500 to come. I haven't heard if VU involved with any of the other athletes like Karl Griffith (1:47).

World Jrs

Believe Siofra C-B has been focused primarily on 1500, this season.

Karl Griffith attends or will attend University College Dublin on some academic scholarship of sorts.

2014 Recruiting Thread is maxed out -- so I'm responding to ExCattyGuy's last post there here:

Yes -- I thought that I had heard that name previously.

As far as
I know, in addition to Siofra C-B, Marcus went after 3 guys in Ireland
for this year. None will be coming to Villanova this semester (at least
none are registered at Villanova as of today). One of the three will
take his 1st year at university (2014-2015) in Dublin and then might be
in play for Villanova for next year. He seems genuinely interested. No
word on the other two. One of these two seems interested in Villanova,
but I have no dope at all on the second guy. Also, I do not pretend to
know how heavily Marcus recruited them. So, not much to report here.

Or1on, Schwartz and Parker are at the top of my list as well.

There is a lot of talent in VU's recruiting territory, this year (both girls and boys). Check-out Kailee Sawyer (57.15, 2:06.62, 4:26.63) and Erinn Stenman-Fahey (56, 2:06.97), both from Ontario, Canada.

Would love to see them sign Zola Golden (Arlington, NY) - 11.67, 23.91, 52.82. Speed is good.

VU finally attracted an outstanding talent from Ireland in Siofra C-B. Now just cross the waters to England and Bobby Clay. Finished 8th in World Juniors 1500 - 2:07.65, 4:16.47, 9:13 (3000), 6th English Schools XC. Be really nice, but has VU ever recruited anyone from England?

Note: VU's women's recruiting is awfully spotty. More recently, it has been one good year followed by a very poor year. I would call 2014 a good year, but nothing has come from 2013 ... yet (one can hope - Williams and Brislin could surprise). Hopefully 2015 will be a good year. Be nice for a change.

Speaking of recruiting foreign nationals, I am hearing that Hugo Beamish's brother Geordie Beamish (New Zealand Schools XC champ, 2nd at NZ Juniors XC, etc) will indeed come Stateside (perhaps as early as January, after some thought he would arrive for fall semester), but is aiming at Ivy League schools (and pseudo Ivies such as Stanford). Evidently scored 1400+ on SAT and wants to cash in by attending a big name-brand Ivy-quality school.

This is the second time I have heard word to the effect that Villanova is not in the mix for Beamish-the-Younger (despite Hugo's success at Villanova). Let's see what happens on that front.

Agree with ExCattyGuy about Marshall. I'd be shocked if he attended Villanova. Pat Henry at Texas A&M seems to get who he wants from that state. Marshall is a big-time national recruit, so he could wind up anywhere. But Villanova? Not bloody likely.

Mike Brannigan (NY) should be on VU's radar. Great story about a kid with autism. Northport, L.I. is Villanova territory, He mentions other schools on the video, but not VU. Yes, G'town, but also Wisconsin, where VU recently missed-out on the next Australian XC standout, Morgan McDonald. Still, a great story.

Mike Brannigan

Another interview with Mike Brannigan on Dyestat.. Good. Only discordant note is he mentions being close with Mickey Burke, who is a frosh at Syracuse. Brannigan mentions Syracuse as a school that is recruiting him, in the first video.

Note: He placed a close 2nd to Bryce Millar (F-M) in State XC championship (Burke was 3rd); finished in a close 2nd to Gavigan in 1600 State championship - 4:07.84 to 4:07.82..

Can VU sign both Gavigan and Brannigan and have $ left for some of the other talent in their recruiting territories and elsewhere? Would be nice.

Brannigan Interview

People, do a "google" on Kaley Ciluffo (thanks D'Nova).. Appears to be quite a talent, but the more interesting thing about her is the state of Iowa stripped her school of the state track title and banned her from competing in 2015 because she ran against collegians and maybe some pros. Got to hand it to the bureaucrats to destroy the joys of just running or competing ...

Nova is showing interest in Michael Bunch out of Valley West, Kingston Pa. Bunch is a hurdler, long jump and triple jump athlete with jump numbers about 1.5" short of last years Big Ten champion. Penn State and Oregon have offered. He's also an Honors student so grades are a non issue.

hoop,

It appears on the female team that we seem to be trying to move away
from simply middle and long distance runners.

Did anyone read that at the University of Tennessee some of the frosh women athletes were called to the new coach's office and dismissed from the team because Sullivan-Alford has a new vision for the program and they didn't fit?

Three were walk-ons, but others had scholarships to several other major track schools.

Their scholarships will be honored, but they have limited use of the track and no equipment. Scholarships will be honored until spring, and then they are out.

One of the women was actually recruited to PSU when the current UT coach was still there, but Sullivan-Alford told her she wouldn't have recruited her for UT. Another took the UT scholarship so her parents could pay tuition at another college for her sister.

Sorry I couldn't link the article. It's a cold world out there.

Saw that UT piece on Alford-Sullivan. Weird deal by taking schollies before they even competed. Not going to help her reputation on the recruiting trail.

Really weird move by her.

D'Nova, I am perfectly happy to believe that Villanova has targeted Grant Fisher. Is this from the discussion on Let's Run? Very silly people over there.

Has Burda committed?

If this is true, is a good sign that Villanova is taking its recruiting very seriously. Men will lose two XC top 5 after this year and there are no obvious replacements of that caliber. Fisher would solve that problem and maybe entice others to come.

If Marcus is recruiting in Michigan, he should look at Donavan Brazier as well.

Allie Ostrander (Alaska) has listed Villanova as one of four schools she will officially be visiting. She has not decided on the fifth yet.

Ostrander is considered the top XC female. Is definitely a possible distance star. but can also be a leg on 4x1500 - 4:49.47 (1600).

Allie Ostrander

Nova hasn't had much luck recruiting against Stanford, and if Oregon joins the list as the 5th visit, that's even worse. At least Georgetown isn't on the list. That would be a trifecta of torment for Nova.

Speaking of Michigan, Georgetown has evidently just gotten a commitment from Michigan's #1 female distance runner, Audrey Belf (ranked #7 nationally, and reigning USA Junior Nationals 5K champion).

Link to story.

Audrey Belf to Georgetown

Georgetown women take 7 of the top 9 and add one of this year's top recruits. Women's recruiting needs a lot of work even to be competitive again.

With McEntee graduating next spring and Denault and Williamzs as seniors next fall, the men need a good recruiting year also.

SIAP, Marcus evidently interested in Casey Comber (Hatboro-Horsham), who came 6th on Friday at PIAA Class AAA XC state District 1 championship. See link for top results of the race.

If he wasn't before, gotta believe that Marcus is now recruiting 11th grader Jake Brophy from Central Bucks East. He won the big school PA state XC title today and set a course record. Ran 15:24 for the 5K course.

Brianna Schwartz has visited, Bigger question is how did it go?

In the past couple of years, there have been a couple of high profile runners who have had excellent visits at Villanova and gone elsewhere - e.g., Kennedy Weisner, Sabrina Southerland (G'town strikes again). Forget Stanford. Kind of explains G'town taking 7 of top 9 at Big East - before Siofra at 12. Another reminder of excattyguy's admonition on 11/1.

Note in the picture of the Villanova women at Big East starting with Siofra C-B on the right and working left, the next two women appear to be enjoying the dining hall a bit much. Those two (at least) might be lugging around too much lard - a bit chunky. One is Piccirillo. Don't know who is the girl next to Siofra.

That under-performing senior class - Venables, Chapman, et al - still haunts the team. Better recruit a lot better if you want to stay in the conversation. What is it only four years ago they were NCAA champs ...? Now...? Women really are in dire straits. They need Schwartz and ? and ? Men are only one year away from the beginnings of a sharp decline - unless they recruit well, this year. Grant Fisher?

Think about it ... Marcus persuades Siofra C-B to come all the way from Ireland and there is nobody here ...

Emily Bracher (Freehold Township, NJ) - 58.6 (400), 2:11.2 (800), 4:59.9 (1600) - has visited Villanova. Not running XC, this season, because of hip injury - hairline fracture & stress fracture.

Bracher

SIAP, but 400 meter specialist Sarah Knowles (Shenendehowa HS, NY) has committed to Villanova. Looks like 55.53 is her PR. Has run on 4x8 relay, but no open 800 time listed.

Sarah Knowles

Villanova women have just signed Ohio D2 state 1600 champion Sammy Bockoven (Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy, Hudson, Ohio -- in sunglasses below). She ran a D2 state record of 4:49.53 back in June to win the state title. She also finished 5th at the D2 cross country state meet on November 1 of this year.

PRs
800: 2:13.61
1600: 4:49.53
3200: 11:19.89
