The heat sheets for the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton were released and it has Rob Denault as running for Villanova. He previously has competed unattached. Anyone know anything about this?

he's been running unattached all year, starting with xc. maybe they are going to use him with Mildenhall, McEntee, and a fourth in a 4 x 1500.

I would really appreciate a solid 4xMile because I'm only going to be able to make Saturday at Penn.

I would go along with excattyguy. After Mildenhall and McEntee, the 4 x mile has several candidates in Tetreault, Tully and LoRusso, but Denault might be a better option. Tetreault hs been shakey, but he ran on the team, last year. Tully has made great strides, this year; ran 4:07 (mile) indoors LoRusso simply has not developed.

I just got confirmation that Denault's red shirt is gone, as of today's race. If he does well at Larry Ellis (Princeton), then it's likely that he'll be part of Villanova's 4 x 1500 squad at Penn Relays.

interesting. why wouldn't he run unattached at Ellis and if he does well then put him in the 4x1500? if they are not sure he will run at penn, why use his redshirt? maybe it's an entry problem for Penn and couldn't be avoided.

It sure does lead one to believe that the decision on the Penn Relays 4 x 1500 has been made already. Evidently, Marcus believes that he needs Denault for Penn + Big East + NCAA. I'd bet that Denault's 3:47.15 two weekends ago at Princeton -- in conjunction with Tetreault's 3:54.09 at the same meet -- was the tipping point. It should be interesting to see who the 4 guys are at Penn. Mildenhall + Denault + ??? + McEntee. If only Sam Ellison could be stretched.

Based on Friday's Larry Ellis results, it would appear that the 4 x Mile at Penn will probably be Tetreault, Mildenhall, Denault, & McEntee. Clearly Marcus believes they have a chance of winning 4 x Mile with Denault. Without him, they are not even in the conversation.

Excattyguy makes a point in another post (Ellis Results) of using Denault on the DMR on the 1200 leg. Based on his HS performances, the 1200 leg should have been Fitzsimons, but he is not running well. I question Denault's speed for the 1200. He ran 1:52.5 in HS, but that may have been a junior time. McEntee would probably run the best 1200, but you have to save him for anchor. Tetreault? Denault may be the best option. So maybe Marcus was thinking DMR as well as 4 x Mile.

Sleeper team to watch out for in both DMR and 4 x Mile is Princeton. Keys: Peter Callahan [1:48.7 (800), 3:58.9 (mile)]& Russ Dinkins [1:48.3 (800)] in DMR.

Denault is probably stronger and faster than 1:52 now. Strength is probably more important. For persepecive, if he added 60 seconds to his overall time and evened out the 400 meter splits, he runs 2:52, one of the top twenty 1200 legs of all time at Penn. That time is not likely or even necessary to be competitive. If you add 62 seconds and even out the splits, it is 2:54, which is fine. Check the 1200 split of Villanova's time last year.

Denault ran the 1:52 as a senior - an improvment of a second over his junior time - which is good. I like your thought process, but I am still a little concerned about the "speed." Tetreault was about 3rd with a 2:57.9, but the field should be a lot stronger this year. I believe Oregon is coming. 1200 is a blend of speed and strength. I place a greater importance on the speed component. Believe Sean Tully ran the 1200 leg when VU won in 2009. Speed. Plus VU is hurt on the 400 leg. Bower does not appear to be where he was, last year, so expect VU to lose about 2 secs there. And that is huge. Ellison is VU's best 400 man, but he has to run 800. Fitzsimons is running about 3 secs slower than he did in HS so he is not an option at 800. Thus, need a strong 1200 leg. I suspect Marcus will be weighing this decision until next Friday. Right now, it appears Denault. And if he can run in the 2:55 range, then VU has a chance. Hope your assessment is correct. Really do not have any other choice ...

Bryan Murphy ran 48.30 on Saturday, which about as fast as Carlton Bowers has ever run. I would rather have McEntee get the baton slightly behind. I think the DMR is Notre Dame's to lose if they compete though. Jeremy Rae is an incredible kicker.

right about Murphy. Bowers best open 400 is 48.06. In last year's DMR he did run a bit under 47.

Also, Fitzsimmons ran 3:51.67 yesterday at Widener.

Penn State, Oregon, and Princeton are very good too.

I haven't looked at what they are planning to run, but the Oregon women have the talent and the athletes to enter and win the SMR, DMR, 4x800, and 4x1500.

I think Ellison's combination of rapid improvement and pure speed will leave it up to McEntee, unless he's way too far behind like that race at Notre Dame indoors.
