I actually think the Republican field is the strongest it has been in at least 20 years. Romney was really the only viable candidate 4 years ago, and he had shot himself in the foot repeatedly. Before that, McCain was really only guy with any chance, close to no chance. Bush never had any rivals even close to him aside from McCain. No one was beating Billy in '96, but there weren't a lot of guys ready then anyway. Aside from these guys the Republican hopefuls are usually hopeless dreck like Pat Robertson, Huckabee, Santorum.
This year, if Rubio or Kasich somehow got through, I think they'd win. Cruz would not be hopeless and would do well in the debates, win some people over. Trump is what he is.
On the Democrat side, would agree it's a very weak field.
